Such a genius line. It refers to the relationship with Allison that George was trying to get out of, and at the same time, the closet he was just outed from by the newspaper article.
...also they were warned not to use loud voices or they'll be thrown out. So the line refers to him being out of the cafe too.

George quite often had moments of realism and self loathing. That was the beauty..the struggle between his ego and his insecurity.

His antics are the heart of the show. Jerry makes funny remarks and observations, Kramer has amazing physical comedy skills and is a fascinating character, and Elaine complements them perfectly, but George makes the show.
