Time to DECLUTTER! (& restore this apothecary cabinet)

  • Who's been putting off organizing all my craft stuff for years???? Definitely not me.
But as a pure coincidence, let's do some decluttering! I purchased this apothecary cabinet on Marketplace (for a little too much money oop), and she was looking a little too 'Shabby Chic' for my tastes. I got to work restoring her, and then tackling ALL of my craft supplies that have been haunting me.
I hope you have a nice relaxing time watching! Not my usual brand of chaos, but every tornado needs a cleanup crew.

Hi! I’m a furniture conservator 🤓. First of all, thank you for your service 🫡!
You did a great job! The reason you want to use a plastic scraper is that metal might have a chemical reaction with the paint stripper, but it seemed to be fine. Wearing gloves helps prevent you developing a contact allergy, wearing goggles prevents an ER trip if it gets in your eye.
Solvents like acetone or ethanol are great to remove any leftovers! We use it too, usually on cotton swabs. The wood can handle it, just be careful if its veneer (not in this case I think, seems solid oak), that you don’t harm the glue. If you want to reduce elbow grease, you couldv’e tried a second coat of paint stripper and cover it with cling film, to allow it to penetrate a little deeper. But you might have still needed to do some finishing touches with a solvent.
The furniture wax made it so stunning! For most waxes, you can heat it up to have it penetrate deeper and give a richer colour. Use a hair dryer, or heat by friction, and then buff out as it cools for a shiny finish.
You had absolutely great results, and it always warms my heart to see another whitewash gone 🥰

    • @annesways9289
      @annesways9289 Před 2 měsíci +48

@@amberemanuel8561 sanding is very satisfying, but rarely actually needed!
Lets say you have a vintage mid 19th century table, and every 25 years or so it was sanded down to put a new finish on it. Thats 7 times sanded down in the past 175 years. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you can easily take away half a centimeter (1/5 inch) of material per session, so thats 3,5 cm / well over an inch. That adds up so quickly, and can really spoil the appearance of the furniture or even break it eventually. And if there was veneer, its already completely sanded off by then! (Sorry, conservator on a rant because I’ve seen too many beautiful pieces ruined by this 🥲)
In this case I think the wax finish already helped out a lot to fill in the pores and any uneven spots 😊

Hi, cobbler's daughter here! Those "shoehorn things" in your basement clutter boxes are shoe stretchers! You can use them to make leather shoes that are too tight more comfortable. Simply put them in the shoes, crank them until the shoe is stretching out, and leave 'em for a day or two. Should make tight shoes permanently easier to wear. My dad used to have HUNDREDS in his little shoe shop and it was my job as his "assistant" (read: annoying child he kindly brought to work with him when my mother needed a break) to put shoes on the stretchers and shine them as necessary. :)

    Bird nerd here! :D
Unsalted peanuts for crows are GREAT, but if the crows are not already just hanging about your yard, you'll want to make your yard bird friendly to begin with.
I recommend a large tube feeder (perhaps with a squirrel-deterrent gravity cage) and fill it with black oil sunflower seeds. (Not a mix, most birds don't eat the millet filler and it just leaves a mess while everyone picks out their favorite thing, the sunflower seeds). Alternatively, you can get suet feeders and suet. Either way, the presence of other dumber birds hanging around partying tells the crows that no predators are around, and they'll come get some sunflower seed scraps.
At that point, can toss them some unsalted peanuts now that the crows are likely actually hanging out in the yard ;D
Another tip is that ALL birds and critters like a water source. A fountain or bubbler or something brings everyone to the yard, and they're like, it's fresher than yours.

@@jonasholzem2909 I mean, there are certainly worse things, I wouldn't want to wash my hands with it daily. It IS a great way to find every little crack, break, or paper cut in your skin, but mostly it will dry the skin out from relatively casual exposure. I'm an organic chemist and work with acetone daily to clean glassware, and I'd FAR rather get it on my skin than breathe in a bunch of acetone fumes.
Which reminds me! Get a respirator!! Even if she's using "adequate ventilation" or working inside, I suspect she's exposed to a LOT more VOCs than the average person. That shit will do some damage over time, and a lot of it's not great in the short term either. I think people underestimate the amount of damage breathing in chemical fumes can cause. Eye protection is great, use it. But don't forget that though the damage to your lungs may not be immediately obvious, enough of it will add up over time. And make sure it's actually one rated for organic fumes, not just a dust mask. It can live in that handy little drawer.

Many years of crafting have taught me one thing -- if you can afford to spend the money, get the storage furniture you need and want (truly want). There's no glory in saying "if only" and crying a little inside every time you think about what you missed. Better to sigh about the money when you see one cheaper. This couldn’t be more timely; I have an organization professional coming *today* to help me begin the monumental task that is turning the giant terrifying pile of hoarded things and unpacked boxes and disassembled storage furniture into my studio. We moved 8 months ago, and instead of setting up my workspace, I’ve just been excavating whatever I can reach and making things in other parts of the house, which means there’s Maker Mess™️ in every common space, and I don’t want to put the tools and supplies *back* into the hell room, because then I’ll lose them again, so there’s just a chaos library of bags and boxes squirreled away all over the house. Anyway! I relate to all of this, and I feel so much less shame about it having seen your bins and piles. Thank you ❤

I moved into this house TWENTY TWO YEARS AGO. There are still unpacked boxes. To be fair, the house had stuff from his grandparents, parents, aunt, and first wife - none of whom lived there! Until we owned the house, he was worried about moving furniture around. I'm all "dude, grammaw died in 97, it won't hurt her feelings to move this chair to another room"!
Then I was bedridden for over 8 years, and am now able to move more, so decluttering is slowly going along.

Hint for makingn labels for this sort of thing. Put a blank label in, trace avalible space where writing can be seen, take label out, cut that traced space from the middle, and now you have a template to put over your labels as you write to make sure you get your writing in the correct area. You can even mark the center on your template to help.

The key is to sand the wood. Just sand it next time you want to see your apothecary cabinet looking top-notch (use a machine if possible, don't overexert those wrists) and then add some wood oil. When you couldn't find something or struggled to get something right, I've often felt that your clutter was an obstacle to your process and therefore impeding your happiness. In your case, it seems like disorganization was contributing to your suffering. With the lovely old suitcases you could get frontless drawers/a deep shelving unit and put them on it! That way you still get the gorgeous aesthetic, but you don’t gotta break your back to access stuff, you just slide it on out, open, grab, put the case back in!

That cabinet came out so cute! Shabby chic really needs to be done *just right* in order to not look tacky. This was a VAST improvement!
Also, I seriously need your cleaning/organizing energy. I always get overwhelmed, freeze up, and then find a distraction.

I have a bit of a double-whammy with organizing: ADD and OCD. Not bad, but def. there. I've learned over the years that there is so much emotional exhaustion that comes with organizing it can be an impossible process to even start. For me, it's because I need the 'organized stuff' to be _perfectly_ organized, or I feel like I've accomplished nothing. _THAT_ thought stressed me out so much, (the perceived effort and worry about the ultimate failure), that my mind sets me up distractions as well-so that I don't have to go there and 'suffer'. ... Brains can suck.
It probably would have helped if I'd spent some money on therapy rather than trying to figure this out on my own with my sabotaging brain, _buuuuut,_ what I've become a bit better at, (a bit), is _forcing_ myself to keep reminding myself that "It doesn't have to be perfect, it just need to be BETTER. Perfect will come down the road. Right now I need to THINK, and I can't with all this crap!" It's not a lie, either. So when I get this into my head, I can start organizing.
And, (shocking, lol), I _feel so much better_ when it's done! I suddenly didn't need it to be perfect, anymore. Ugh-one's brain really can be one's enemy sometimes!!

In that cabinet that you showed after the trunks (and the adorable little guy) could you install a small tension rod across the top and then get some hangers with clamps to hang up some of your backdrops?!?
Ps- the cabinet turned out amazing!!

I wish Rachel would occasionally go back to her content in the beginning, it was all about vintage, vintage clothing, how to dress vintage and how to fix your hair to look vintage, etc. I really miss those times, simpler times…. ❤😊

I like the organized cupboard. Honestly, great idea! When we moved (into another apt) my husband stuffed all my arts/crafts into a storage unit. so, i currently have no organization or hobbies (sewing, crochet) and we have been looking for homes since a year (but CA is just too much where we live). Still, keeping in mind organization for my hobbies, my son's toys and his art activities would help so much!

You know your tetris skills are too strong when you store more than should be physicslly capable in one cupboard 😂

LMAO The Twilight skit was great! ALSO, I, too have a gargantuan amount of crafting crapoloa that I've been needing to organize for about 20 years! LOL So, now that I have an actual home we actually own and I have a room dedicated to ME it's time. But, I've waited until I retired and promptly injured myself not once, not twice, but three friggin times that first year of retirement and I'm just now fully recovered enough to start! And you came out with this video and I am completely jazzed and ready to get started! Thanks, Rachel for this fun and inspirational video. Frodo is a wise doggo and will never fall for your sweet enticements to go outside when it will freeze his little doggy dingle off!

This is the vibe I needed today. Also I so relate to the "how do I have so many zippers" and the satisfaction of finally having them all in one bin 🥰

me too - and am thhe only one who says to themsellves "oh she will fill every one of those drawers within months...and then some"? LOL! Empty drrawers are sad drawers - and no such thing for crafterrs as too much space!

I'm obsessed with apothecary cabinets too, this is a filing/office cabinet but probably more useful as craft storage than a apothecary cabinet as these drawers are bigger. ❤
