So this weeks video we are in our apartment (really sorry about that, you know that isn't what we like to do) but from the weekend after, you are going to see Chiang Mai in all it's glory. I love your tips especially about security and budgeting because bizarrely they remind me of just how careless I am! I had problems especially in the first year but ironically that was when I was at my most careful. Every country I moved to, my UK Bank blocked by card every time I informed them of the country. As soon as I stopped informing them, I never had a problem. A bit backwards, right? Re budgeting (I should probably do a video about this!), the first year was purely travel and I had the most ridiculous spreadsheet set up. Once I started earning on the road (especially once income streams became established) I've developed a much more blasé attitude. After 6 years I just kind of know what I'm spending, you know? Starbucks every day? Why not! I haven't tracked or budgeted in 5 years, I just have a basic income/expenditure sheet set up which I look at monthly (and try to stick to LOL).It's great if you can get to that point. Early retirement and Digital Nomadism are of course different matters though. If it was the other way around, I'd be an Excel madman!
I would say basically say goodbye to your home bank immediately. Especially UK-based banks, a) many are so behind the rest of the world (compared to Russian banks for example) and b) many just don't understand that people wouldn't be living in the UK. Get Revolut or equivalent. The 'visit a branch' line used to send me into a Phil Mitchell-style meltdown!

    • @2GoRoam

Fantastic and hugely useful pointers --- not just for nomads but also for anyone on vacation.
I've always told folks (among other things) 1) If there is metro / underground - map out BEFORE you go out. Tourists are easy to notice as they are either really focused on metro map in the station or following Google maps --- prior planning (including stepping out of station into cafe to map your journey. 2) Carry a crappy old wallet as well as your normal wallet that will hopefully be in bag with cards / money split up. IF you are ever held up, take out old wallet with video library card / expired or near zero balance visa card and couple of $$ --- throw it one direction and run in the other --- bad guy will 99.99999% go for wallet and you are gone before they find a 90's blockbuster card. 3) With meds keep in prescription bottles and have letter from doctor ---- many nations (even those where things may be illegal otherwise) may allow you to bring in IF you check with Embassy and provide physician note to Embassy ---- may take time but avoid doing time.
Just a couple of thoughts ---- your advice is great so please keep posting.

Excellent advice! I learned to have several forms of payment. When my debit card was hacked, my bank froze ALL my accounts until I got a new card. Luckily, I had a credit card from a different bank as well as access to funds from a 3rd financial institution so it was an inconvenience rather than an emergency. Also have multiple hard and soft copies of important documents and keep them in different places in case one gets lost or stolen.

Great tips! Man, what a harrowing bank experience. Happy you got it sorted. I guess it's nice to know the banks are so sensitive to fraud. However, they still don't quite know how to handle international nomads like us. So, as you say, having all your ducks in a row is important. We keep separate accounts in a couple of banks in case one of our hubs goes down. "Story time with Neil"... I like the sound of that. Maybe it should be a regular piece 😆

VPN use in some countries it is illegal or restricted. Best to check before travel or use. For sure VPNs may add some additional security but there are probably other measures of higher priority. VPNs also have their own risks. Probably sticking to trusted DNS servers and web sites with secure web browsing (HTTPS), like your bank, then a VPN does not add any value, despite what the VPN companies marketing may say. There's still many other risks a VPN does not address so perhaps folks can get a false sense of security.

I dislike 2FA because I have to now have my phone with me at all times, even though I know it's a good idea. I hope that companies will catch on and develop things to deal with that. Trying to have a phone always linked to home is a bother. Can you address how you research the prescriptions in more depth? I would love to travel for longer periods, but this is one issue that holds me back.....knowing whether or not my prescriptions would be available and the hoops to get them. Thanks, and happy travelling.

I hear mixed views about VPNs - that with the new secured sites there isn’t a need - where you have travelled - are the sites not secure? Even with an open wifi in a coffee shop they will know I am connecting to the router and the router might know that I am talking to a bank but the info shouldn’t be accessible because it already encrypted leaving from my computer? Well as long as the site is on https …. I am confused!

Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! I guess it is down to personal taste in that. When we travel we are carrying cameras and just so many different valuable items. So we always research where we are heading for the ease of getting money from an ATM, if we can put that off until we get to our new location, then it is one less thing to worry about as we travel.

😂I said ‘SOFA’ just as you did Sara; I’ve been on enough of the armless or bamboo sofas to know that one! Neil, I wasn’t sure what ‘bluff’ the bank rep was suggesting that they ‘call’. Had you indicated that you were going to remove your money or something? Also, I’ve been through a frozen Citibank account- what a nightmare- same line, ‘you have to go into a branch’, I told them there were no branches in my entire State, then they said, you have to send a notarized letter of specific content indicated by them, have it notarized, send by Fedex to customer service, RIDICULOUS. I sent the document in overnight delivery ($45) - they denied receiving it for a week - even though I had a signature and name of the person who had signed for it! I was locked out of that account for over 6 weeks. Why was I locked out - because of no activity, which they had warned me about. I asked them what activity they needed to see, they said deposit/withdrawal/bill pay. I made a bank transfer deposit as soon as I ended that call and thought ‘I’m good’.
Ultimately they still froze account - I mention the deposit I made, they said ‘oh, ACH (bank to bank) deposits don’t count. I said, ‘well, it sure was counted as a deposit when I opened the account online!’
Glad it wasn’t my only account - OH, this comment is too long - but, I have to tell this: the bank rep who was ‘helping’ me with the frozen account said, ‘ OH, we need to act fast - I don’t want you to lose your money!’ He then went on to claim that if I didn’t act quickly, the money could go into ‘unclaimed property’ and made it sound like a dark abyss! Ultimately, I had to file a report the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau which was just off the charts crazy to me. As soon as I had access to that account, I transferred the balance to another account. They’ve begun sending me incentives to open a new account - yeah right!
Ultimately, we are at the mercy of these organizations when things go wrong, so I just use all of my remaining accounts a little here and there to hopefully avoid a problem like this in the future.
Always glad to see you guys show up in the feed🙂
