Breaking news this morning as Crazy Town, the 2000’s era group who you might remember for the massive hit Butterfly announced that their frontman shifty shellshock whose real name is Seth Binzer, died at his home on Monday. He was 49.
Crazy Town was best known for its 2000 hit song "Butterfly," which peaked No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The song would sample one time tour mates and close friends of the group Red Hot Chili Peppers 1989 song Pretty Little Ditty from mothers milk. The song would also top the charts in 7 other countries. Crazy Town’s debut album, “The Gift of Game,” sold more than 1.5 million copies. In a strange twist the group claimed they never wanted to release butterfly as the lead single
Guitarist Kraig "Squirrel" Tyler would explain to an interviewer: "We knew all along we didn't want to release 'Butterfly' first because we didn't want to be known as the band that does 'Butterfly'. We are looking at this like we want to have a career. That isn't who we are".[3]
The critical reception to butterfly was mixed. VH1 named it the the 34th "Most Awesomely Bad Song Ever" by VH1. but spin labelled it as the 13th best nu-metal song.
Shellshock for his part struggled with addiction throughout his music career. The singer appeared on the reality TV shows "Celebrity Rehab" for two seasons and "Sober House" for another two. He would credit Anthony Kedisi, frontman of the CHili Peppers of helping him with him get sober recalling to rolling stone “Anthony found me and took me to lunch - where I tried to borrow money from him so I could get high. I didn’t finish my rampage for a couple of days, but he showed me that I had people who were worried and cared about me. Anthony’s this angel who appeared in my life.”
Crazy Town would break up in 2003 after their sophomore effort, “Darkhouse,” was a commercial failure. They would eventually reunite, releasing their latest album 2015’s The Brimstone Sluggers. Many would brand the band as one hit wonders as none of their releases lived up to “Butterfly”. Just last year, pop-rock singer Gayle interpolated the song for her contribution to the Barbie soundtrack, “butterflies.” No additional details regarding the circumstances of his death have been revealed. - Hudba
I remember seeing him on Celebrity Rehab, and promising his son (age 4 at the time) that he was going to get clean. So heartbreaking.
Thought I saw him on that show. Couldn't remember the name of it though.
Ya I remember him from that show too. RIP
celebrity rehab was such a kindhearted show, this breaks my heart
I met him back when I was doing security at a venue in ATL. They opened up for Methods of Mayhem played with Primer 55. He was a nice guy when I met him. Sad😢
Incredible line-up!
I met him while doing security at Universal Studios; he was totally cool.
Primer 55’s front J-Sin is also gone too. He died of aids a few years ago. It’s so sad even he died and especially when not many people even known he did considering Primer 55 wasn’t a very big band but it had its run for a while rest in piece.

After seeing him in recent years, it unfortunately seemed inevitable. I hope he's finally at peace.
He couldn't let go his demons, huh? 😢
@kenterminateddq5311 the most recent footage I saw of him was a meltdown at a show earlier this year. You could tell he was using.
He died doing what he loved. A shit load of drugs
Smoking meth
I do not
Addiction sucks. I quit drinking 3 years ago and don't really miss it. I drank daily for 30+ years. Feel like i've wasted my life but at least I am alive. If I didn't stop drinking I was on my way to liver failure.
30 years is a long time. I'd love to say "you didn't waste your life"but that is kind of true, tho it's never too late to quit when the alternative is 'waste all your life and die at the end' at least you got out early and I hope your getting back to what made you happy before the devil got ya. Stay clean stay positive
U must have a liver made of STEEL cuz 30yrs is a very long time! Glad you're still here!
So glad you gave up drinking. I lost my best friend from liver disease due to long term drinking.
RIP Seth Binzer. I follow him on Instagram. He used to respond to my comments. I hope he is at peace now. 🕊️
What a guy... because your comments are shite.
he's known to reply to fan tweets as well, i reckon he was pretty down to earth guy. hope he's in a better place.
Yeah dude it's really tragic, I never spoke with him but I have mutual friends through the graffiti scene. His soulmate Soleil AKA punky Brewster always responds to my comments, I really hope she's doing okay. I no longer go on IG much.
Just be quiet
Sadly, drugs will ALWAYS destroy talent, and addiction is a lifetime struggle.
Layne was the saddest for me. Sure they’re called Alice In Chains, but not the same band without Staley.
Not discounting the rest, as you’re correct. So many young talented musicians wiped out.
And sometimes they destroy untalented people like we have here
@@louyork8379 You misspelled talented.
@@deacongowan909 Not to forget Wayne.

Not for Shifty. Fentanyl is no joke

Rip. He's been wanting to die for a long time I'm honestly surprised he lasted this long
Ain’t that the truth.
Wow! didn't know that. that's pretty sad :(
Dang that is Crazy I met Shifty back in september 2023 last year when my band A Portrait for the Blind played at Crazy Fest. He was pretty chill and friendly. Told us he that he really dug our sound after watching us perform. RIP my dude
Take what he said and go on to make amazing music.
Keep on doing music brother and heed the warning of dope. It’s a hundred percent destructive. I’m not saying DON’T do drugs, just that you need to be in control and have people around you to keep you in check. Moderation is the key
@@miketaylor2083 Insipid advice, 😂!!! when it comes to hard drugs, abstinence is key. Stick to things that can't kill you and won't hold you like Cannabis and Psylocybin.
I really liked Butterfly back then, may he rest in peace
He was in a sorry state when he “performed” Butterfly at Norm’s Rare Guitars a short while ago. It’s up on their CZcams channel. RIP, Shifty.
That’s the last time I saw him, too. It was sad.
Wow that was bad. It almost sounded like he had dentures and forgot to put them in. When he could remember the lyrics.
@@dawg4135 Poor guy. Always sad to see someone destroyed by addiction.
Oh wow I remember that. And there was that recent video of him fighting with his band mates over money or something.
I have no idea why they posted that video. They absolutely shouldn't have. He was clearly a mess
"Fighting for peace....is like fu××ing for virginity" - Shifty. I'll always remember that. RIP legend.
Thats george carlin unfortunately, although the mind to retain something like that shows there was a light on up there.
nothing original about him, even that quote
What does that mean?
It means an oxymoron.
Fighting for thirst is like finding ur way out the birth canal. ** Idk maybe that sounded more special than his special but the fact that some of y'all r that tiny fraction of a 🎆 that actually made it is beyond me
I'm genuinely intrigued about what wild drug cocktail lead to his death. This guy was like a Vietnam Soldier of drug use. Legend tier honestly, sad but true
Probably fentanyl. It gets everyone
Indeed, sad but true.
Probably fentenayl laced... that garbage is everywhere
Fentanyl is a bitch. I hit that legendary status in my day. I actually did seven different drugs at the same time once. I was clinically dead for four minutes off 1/20th of a gram of Fentanyl. That stuff is so strong that it doesn't matter what your tolerance is. It'll take anyone down. It's the reason I am five years sober and would never dream of getting high again.
Most likely Fentanyl
I loved the Darkhorse record, it was more mature and I wish more people got to hear it
I concur. Spent countless hours playing the Red Planet map in Unreal Tournament 2004 Onslaught mode and Darkhorse was basically the soundtrack to that map for me.
Edit. Actually Hed P.E. 2003 Blackout record was the soundtrack to that map. But anyway around 2003 I had Darkhorse on constant rotation.
Why? Not hard to be more mature than butterfly… and that was terrible
Those were some wild Bigfoot stories. I remember the time that a Bigfoot chased me when I was riding my motorcycle in the mountains.
RIP, starry eyed surprise brings back so much Nostalgia from my childhood… I’m sure the older people were having the time of their lives out partying but I was 6 also having the time of my life as a happy innocent kid with none
of the stressors I have now as an adult
Just remember most of the stresses are imaginary. Don’t suffer stresses, handle problems without suffering. Buddhism may help. Don’t long for the past, that is futile. Nostalgia is a trap. Expectation is the root of all suffering, as is attachment.
One day at a time my friend 💙👊🏼
@@derekgregg9009 your analysis of my comment is very wrong. I am happy and I understand that life changes and there is good and bad at every stage along the way. I do not long for the past but it is very nice to remember those times not mainly because it was less stress but the memories
@@derekgregg9009 I agree Nostalgia is a trap, but man you gotta read the room. You make Buddhists look like pretentious dicks.

Ok this is crazy!! I had this need to hear Butterfly this morning for whatever reason so I listened to it! WOW! RiP! So sad
You’re spiritually gifted
Had that before
Locked in that hive mind. Other people buzzing in your mind when it happened.
Butterfly was vomit inducing. Sad he went the way he did but let’s all not act like he’s a better person than he actually was.
It's normal for the recently departed to get hagiographied at least mildly. But all I see here is boilerplate respect for the dead, reflections on the sad power of drug addiction, and some "I met the guy and he was nice to me on that occasion" anecdotes and so forth. I am sorry you disliked one of his musical compositions so much (I can relate, as I didn't like anything but "Butterfly") and that apparently not enough attention is being paid to that in the immediate aftermath of a man's death.
@@salvadorromero9712 naaaah Butterfly was great, it was the sound of the time. Just because the Gen Z OP wasn't around for it, doesn't mean it wasn't gold it was. It captured nearly the entire country at the time of it's release. Like the Macarena like Baby Got Back like White Rabbit. It was a mega hit, and not because it sucked either. You and me are correct in our belief that Butterfly was a good song.
RIP Shifty I only recently learned your name, but I've been digging that one tune for decades!
Omg we just booked them for a show at a venue I work at. Condolences to all affected by his passing.
So many Celebrity Rehab alums have passed- not saying anything about that rehab as obviously the issue is addiction- but it’s still sad. I remember being so mad at the song “butterfly” because “pretty little ditty” is one of my favorite RHCP songs 😆 Rest easy Shifty
He has lived a tough life and fought addiction for years, rip..may you be at peace now. 1974-2024
Saw them on the Ozzfest 2001, most brutal heckling I've ever witnessed. Everyone in the front of the stage were chanting 'Crazy Town sucks!' to the beat of them playing 'Butterfly' on stage
Same saw them here in Michigan at Ozzfest and they were on the main stage I couldn't believe it. Believe it or not The Deftones sucked even worse at Ozzfest 1999. The worst live performance I ever witnessed. Ozzfest 1999 was probably the best Ozzfest ever and one of the best shows in music history by far.
Why they hated them like that?
@@aloooonee Because they sucked. Not hard to figure out lol
Sorry but Crazytown did fuckin suck!
@@WinterInTheForest actually it is hard to. People can hate someone for million reasons.
Wow. Sad. Last year I was digging through old CDs for a DJ Sneak party I was on the lineup for. I came across one that had sharpie on it and said, “SHIFTY”. It made me pause because I hadn’t thought about or listened to that cd in probably 15-20 years.
Before I moved to Canada almost 10 years ago, I was a Cali girl. Around 2001-2003 before I started my career in DJing, I was a singer-songwriter and I can’t recall fully, but I was either just doing background vocals or working on tracks with my friend, TC.
One day we were in the studio and it was Shifty calling on the phone. Never met him (that I remember), but I heard/spoke to him on the phone at least once. TC and Shifty were starting to work together and we shelved our project and he said he was going to work with TC for a while. We lost touch and I always wondered what happened to TC, and TC/Shifty. I went on to music school and DJing for over 2 decades. The last few years I’ve been back to producing and writing songs with my voice again. So, it’s a bittersweet full circle to hear shifty died today.
I may need to pop in that CD that says Shifty on it and see what we were up to. I just remember writing hooks in the studio and life took us all on a turn. I got sober Dec 6, 2012 and such. I Hope TC is alright, because well, i just hope he found his way.
I miss AM, too. Anyway, thanks for this video. ❤
good you threw that call girl job
You don't recall what you were 'up to' together?
May I hazard a guess?
You’re in Edmonton?? Man I’ve been enjoying your videos for years, and didn’t know we lived in the same city. That’s awesome 😎
First a dirtbiker, then a skateboarder, a punk and eventually a drug addict - just like me. I crawled through hell and back again on my nipples and somehow made it out alive when some of those I grew up with are no longer with us. 7½ years ago I had been fully convinced to die of drugs and anybody knowing me had come to expect the same if they hadn't fallen for false rumors already to begin with.
7 years ago though some sort of lever in my brain must have gotten engaged or something because what I didn't manage to pull off for 12 years, and not for a lack of trying - I suddenly managed to get sober virtually over night and it has shown to have been the right decision again and again eversince, _you'll never regret getting sober._
Yeah, but it's a struggle. Maybe not every day, but once in a while it's fking brutal and part of my brain tries to trick the other half into thinking just fall back into the same rituals, just visit the same locations that house the individuals that sell the powder that makes the dopamine flow like a raging river, and I have to catch myself because why yes that does sound fun! and remember all the 'good' things about the drugs and remember this and that?
Struggling not every day, but once in a while it's a little rough.
Just heard Butterfly at work today then come home to find out he's gone. Damn
Rip. So young .
I remember taking a free demo tape from a Crazy Town display at the check out counter of BLOCKBUSTER MUSIC 😅
I’m so old 😭😭😭😭😭
Your fine, I remember cranking the handle on the Victrola to wind up the spring so we could spin some Fats Domino.
Butterfly is a great song; I still listen to it very often. Thank you and RIP Shifty.
Bleh.
RIP SHIFTY.
I remember when their album came out and they spoke of shifty's recovery, And I recall thinking what a tough concept to be entering the rock n roll road life while trying to stay on point, R.I.P.
I saw them at Ozzfest and the crowd booed when they played Butterfly . So Shifty said " Ok , I get it . When I say ' We' you say "Suck "and the crowd went for it ! Crazytown -WE ! Crowd - SUCK ! But in hindsight it kinda made the crowd seem like they were saying that they themselves suck lol ! Either way they got a reaction lol .
First Smash Mouth, then Crazy Town... someone better warn LEN!
They better not... Steal my sunshine
Just like when Taylor Hawkins' death made the news back in 2022, I didn't want to believe that he really died and I've just reacted the same way towards this news story. I really like Crazytown, may Shifty rock in peace. I so hope we don't lose another rock legend.
Legend? I think that may be a bit of a stretch. Actually a lot of a stretch. He was a laughingstock. I mean, I didn't wish him harm but this isn't exactly a major blow to rock n roll.
This is so sad. First we had it with grunge (Kurt Cobain, Scott Weiland, Chris Cornell), and now we're at the age where the nu metal singers are leaving us way too soon as well. We've already lost Wayne Static, Chester Bennington and now Shifty, and I rather don't want to think about who's next - maybe Jonathan Davis? He has been a mess for ages as well.
He's been dead for like 20 years, the meth finally wore off.
I would say "not cool, man," but dammit, I chuckled.
Well played, sir. Well played indeed.

Rest in Peace, Shifty. I was never the biggest fan of Crazy Town, but it’s still a but sad. He looks like the type of guy that has a lot of problems.

I’d imagine his death is related to something else. I mean if he’s been sober for all these years, then shit he did In his 20s probably didn’t have much affect on him now, but it does seem like a lot of younger people are dying lately. Especially when they don’t release the cause, makes me think of “died suddenly” being removed from articles
He hadn't been sober for more than a few weeks for the last 30 years, man. I have no idea why you think he has been sober for a long time, he clearly was not
Thank you for taking the time to make this rock and roll! You didn't and such an eloquent concise way. 🤜🤛
Damn...Butterfly was catchy and i still enjoy it to this day...
Rest easy Shifty🤘🏾🕊🦋

RHCP's 1989 LP "Mother's Milk"
One of the greatest albums of all time, in my humble opinion. ❤
RIP Seth. I spent some time with him in Elementary school when he lived for a short time in Marblehead, MA. Never followed up with him, unfortunately, but some interesting times doing "shifty" things back then - skating, BMX, but man what a life he lived and musical legacy he has left behind.
Rare someone remembers knowing someone in elementary school but it seems he pretty much looked the same his entire life haha! (Just looked at some of his commercials as a child model.) Unfortunately it seems his dad had comfortable means and success but had drugs all over the house and did them in front of him and taught him to roll a J when he was in kindergarten and shit. (Got sober the day his son went to prison for robbery.) I always thought those kids were in many ways unluckier than poor kids with fucked up upbringings. My own family is awesome; I am so lucky. Prayers up for Seth and his family.
@@salvadorromero9712 So true. I remember meeting his dad, and nothing seemed quite right in that household. My time with him was so short, maybe less than a year and just hanging out on a few occasions but it was clear he wanted to bend the rules. I was always shocked but what his parents let him keep on his walls in his room, i.e. pictures of women etc. We were like 11 yrs old. I feel awful for his family and children, but at some point, we choose the life we lead, but his demons started early in life. Prayers.
I fondly remember seeing crazy town in melbourne with the chili peppers and thinking how bad they were. We have all talked about them ever since and over time i have liked them more because they were such an oddity
I’ve been a huge RHCP fan since I was young. It was after Mother’s Milk and I was like 11 or 12. I live on the east coast and they weren’t huge yet so being a fan was a rare thing. When Crazytown put out Butterfly I was angry cuz I never saw credits for Pretty Little Ditty. Glad you said that in the beginning of video even though it’s now known. Still to this day people don’t know that beautiful song, they know Butterfly. This is no diss to Crazytown and RIP Shifty.
My comment mentioned something similar. I LOVE Pretty Little Ditty.
I'm sure they had to pay for it. They may not have been credited, but I am sure RHCP got paid for that
He won the battle against drugs for 20 years, until he didn't.
Remember kids, drugs always win the war.
This is old old news. So sad people nowadays seem to have forgotten drugs only bring destruction and nullification. Of course they are fun...at the beginning. Yet somewhere along the ride drugs will always turn against you eventually...
no
Not 100% of the time though. I'm over a decade clean from the needle and definitely not turning back now. But its rare for sure.

R.I.P. In Loving Memory of Seth Binzer aka. “Shifty Shellshock” the founder of Crazy Town 🥀🪦🕊️ 1974-2024
I got into music in the 90s. I have an extensive music collection, and most of the artists I listen to came out between 1990-2005. Upon hearing of Shifty's death, I went through and counted the artists that have lost the lead singer. I counted twenty four bands I listen to that have lost the lead singer, and that doesn't even count the bands that lost other members. The carnage from the 90s is unbelievable. The genres that got big during that era died off because none of the bands survived. Of all the bands I grew up listening to in the 90s, only Green Day and the Goo Goo Dolls have survived intact, and without going through any break ups or extended hiatus. Losing another one is heartbreaking, but I have become almost numb to it over the years.
Thank you for the post! ✌🏼 RIP Shifty 🙏🏻😔

Man, for some reason I watched a couple of his Crazy Town videos and of course "Starry Eyed Surprise" just a few weeks ago thinking that track was one of my favorite songs back in a day.
I forgot he did that song! 😮

I heard Crazy Town was booted off of Ozzfest due to poor crowd reception. They didnt like being the Butterfly band and that crowd kinda picked on them for it. In response Sharon Kicked them off the tour. Could be wrong but this was the tale I heard about the incident.

Suddenly Crazytown will be loved. Just like the smashmouth dude, they get shit on until they die and then everyone is a fan
I didn't even know the Smashmouth guy had died, people are nice when someone dies but it doesn't last. Smashmouth is still a joke. And that guy was a dick, if you mean the singer. One of the most insecure people ever

I probably wouldn't have noticed "Butterfly" if it weren't for that great guitar work that calls to mind things like "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the MGs. It seems that some of their fans were turned off by the "girlie" lyrics, but I liked the irony between the romantic lyrics, aggressive vocals and the clash of styles blended into the arrangement; it was like a fever dream. It's too bad they never really got past their demons. RIP
You’re an Edmontonian? Been enjoying your content for a while now and didn’t realise. Cool.

I recall seeing an interview with him about two years ago where he told an insane story about how he *swam* from the rehab he had just arrived in over to the mainland to look for coke and not only did he actually manage to get that very Cocaine, but if AI remember correctly he swam *back* to the rehab .
RIP to the man and condolence s to his family.
Probably one of the greatest losses in history
That dude lived in my apartment complex for a couple months Rip
I was not ashamed to tell friends from my youth (our adolescence during the 90s), more "underground anti-too-catchy-tunes", that I love the "Butterfly" tune.
Same. It’s weird when people act like we are not allowed to like songs we enjoyed when we were young.
R.I.P my brother.... thank you for beautiful music ❤❤
I wonder if this was hard news to hear for Anthony Kiedis
Oh yeah, I sure he’s simply inconsolable.
Long time coming!
Come my lady, Come Come my lady...Come and see him at, his funeral, babeh.
One of my favorite bands of all time. Grew up idolizing these guys as a teen
He had a good heart his spontaneous performance at Norms Rare Guitars on youtube was way kool. Yes he looked happy singing his song with just a guy on guitar. He was dancing and was really into it smiling .. some of the comments are saying he looked bad sang bad etc...but you vant escape the fact that he conveyed true emotion and a infectious groove and hook. Go check it out. Happy place . R.I.P.🙏🏽😮
RIP SHIFTY
Gutted 😢 Butterfly was like My Theme tune when that came out... wouldn't go 2 days MAXIMUM without Blasting it.😊
Rest in Paradise.
Great video.
