I have seen Metallica twice once in 1994 and again in 2017. They put on a great show and you literally see fans as young as kids to people over 60. It's an experience.
I can vouch for that, saw them in 2018. Had fans of all ages at the show. Though they are closing in on 60, Metallica still rock. They played this song when I saw them in Minneapolis.
I second this. Saw them in Vienna some years ago and I was surprised at the variety in the audience
One of the rare bands/artists than a grandparent and grandchild can listen to 😁
It's a thing with live concerts with this song. It's like each city of fans have this competition on who can sing the loudest and longest of the end part when the crowd is doing the singing. Its awesome. I wanna say it started in, 2006ish time frame.
Live concerts? I was on a premiere of Through the Never the film and the audience didn't catch up with a bunch of us who sang the songs ... until the Memory. After that it was sing along till the credits (yep, even Orion).
Still remember the outro at Wembley 2008. It felt like my vocal chords came out of my mouth like a cartoon singing on the top of my lungs with 80.000 others. It lasted for several minutes. This is a tradition for Metallica fans since the track began to be played live. The studio version has the wonderful Marianne Faithful on vocals. So beautiful and haunting.

I've seen both multiple times in different venues over the last 30 yrs and nothing beats AC⚡DC indoor 10000 seat venue.

The studio version of the song has Marianne Faithful, a one time girlfriend of Mick Jagger's providing almost like a droning background vocal, very Bob Dylan like. I think the crowd provides a better dynamic in that song compared to studio version.
Am I the only one that gets emotional hearing a crowd sing along like that? I have the same with Rammstein and Nightwish.

Totally! It's like hearing people trashing St Anger then watching them headbang plus know every word to Frantic or Some kind of monster, haha! So you's know every word and headbang to it but it's shit huh...ooookayyyy?!!!
This was 1 of the only times, if not the only time where Lars took over and was like "alright, we're doin this"...the song normally ends with the crowd singing...he just felt it and started playing again and the rest of the band went with it. Super cool

I only subscribed to your channel this morning, so I'm not sure if you've already done this yet, but if u haven't, I recommend the Official Music Video to "The day that never comes" by Metallica ... the song is awesome, but watching the official video with it is really something else!

That has been planned. The crowd has been singing Marianne Faithful's part at least since S&M in 1999.

The part the crowd is mimicking is from Marianne Faithfull, who does guest features on some of their shows and was on the original song and video. Very cool folk chant/yodle.

They change corners all the time. During the songs and between them.
Also it is like this on the album version. Dont you hear he sais "sing it Helsinki". Its usually the same on every concert when they play it
Don't go near the album version... This is definitely a live song through and through... It usually ends with the crowd chanting for about 5 minutes... It is incredible. I for one am not a huge fan of the album version, but live, this is perfect.
I enjoy both, I dig the album version.
@@ctguitarguy8510 to each their own... The album version is kind of boring to me. But when they do this Live, it is just on another level. I like pretty much all Metallica, but the album version here has never been one of my favorites even when it was spanking new, but it did come alive during one of their concerts I was at.

During these more recent tours Lars gets up and plays to the audience ALOT. Could be why people started hating on Lars.🤔
Weird that I've never seen this ending of this song before... and I've watched thousands of live Metallica videos.
It's pretty new and rare. Actually this easily could be the first performance they played it. If I'm not mistaken they start doing this outro in mid 2018

I have seen Metallica 13 times starting in May of 86 and the last was 2019. I am pissed because I wanted to go see them in Arlington, but the Tickets are starting at 700 Bucks! Man, Inflation Sucks!!!

Actually yes , they did do contests like that
the outro jam is not in the studio version and I believe at this show they also did it for the very first time, that´s probably why it sounded a bit unplanned (at previous shows they just let the crowd keep singing basically as long as they want). I don´t know if they still play the outro jam since I haven´t seen a performance of this song from this year yet but they did play it in all performances in the rest of 2018 and 2019 (except s&m2)
First time I've seen this outro. I saw them in Cincinnati in January 2019 and they didn't do it. Would have been cool to see live.

I saw them in Wichita ks in March 2019 and they didn't play the outro. Little secret....... NOTHING Metallica does isn't planned and practiced till its perfect.
You need to take a look at when Metallica played Memory remains at Ullevi 2011 during the big four tour.
The band crowd interaction are never planned,on thd album version the ooos are on there but none of it is planned live

As much as people bag Metallica's music from this particular era, there's no denying they still had a few bangers in there...great to see someone react to this one, got a sick riff to it.
Anytime I see a live performance of a Load/Reload era song, I'm reminded that for every so-called fan who claims Metallica sold out, there are many MANY more who still love their music.
