Thank you for this video. I have been making body butters, soaps, and shaving products for over 3 years now and I still have a lot to learn....watched a million tutorials. Like you I had to try or buy every new EO, or butter base or MP soap base that I read about. If it was organic I had to try it...and I had the best time telling them what was in it. I gave away a lot of products which my friends/family absolutely loved and started buying from me. But, now I'm toning things down to a select few products and I have an idea of a new product for sometime 2022. I like the idea of perhaps having just one new product a year, but for me it has to be something unique about the product. I was always coming up with something different, but now I keep a lot of things to myself and make a decision according to what my customers really like and ask them for suggestions, instead of, "Hey, can you try this and let me know". I just opened my ecommerce store and it is not easy, but I gives me joy and at 74 it keeps me going. Thank you for being so direct, honest and professional😍👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽. You've given me a lot of tips!

As a boy idk why but i've noticed so many girls and women feel ashamed or kinda shy to promote their stuff irl and even online sometimes
Like i kinda get it because i don't have friends and been suffering with social anxiety so im not out there but tbh for my business i would yell in streets😭 and since it's a whole industry you should continuously promote yourself because people might forget of you in a matter of weeks

I really enjoyed this video and the transparency I got from you. I liked that you mentioned if a person is looking for something specific and you know your products wouldn’t be what they need you’d tell them.
People are looking for a quick buck now (and I get ppl have products to sell) but just being honest in my opinion would’ve made come back!

    3rd and final post
We were so successful with our soap we wished we had discovered it 20 years earlier and it was a great adventure for us in our senior years. We were producing 500 lbs of soap a week and just couldn't keep up with the demand ,as my wife had a degree in business and marketing she had hit the sweet spot and could not expand without employing staff and a production plant and the massif cost it would be involved. So be careful what you wish for it could bite you on your ass very easily. My wife and I used to leave home at 2 am on a Sunday and travel 100 miles to the big smoke and set up in the heart of our main capital city set up at 4am have break fast coffee and hot oatmeal then open at 6am and pack down at 5pm that night go and have supper till 7 pm and get home about 9 pm Sunday evening sleep till 11 am Monday.then make soap on Tuesday till Friday, but if you want the big cookies you have to put in the work.
So try not to get too big too soon just baby steps as you will have good days and bad ones and a word from my wife don't borrow money to start your soap business just build it up step by step and remember always look 6 weeks ahead when making soap plus only have a dozen soap lines if you have too many you will lose your core business model and be all over the place.

2nd post Hi all now for the exciting stuff!
Tip 7 what we did when you leave the soap to cure do not put it on drying racks get some thick cardboard boxes ( like a sealed banana box) this is very important say if you are curing rose soap coat the inside the box with rose oil but not to strong and separate the bars of soap with narrow stripes of cardboard to allow the soap to breath and leave for 6 weeks totally sealed to lock in the fragrance but under no circumstances cover the box with anything as the moisture from the soap will permeate out of the cardboard as the soap cures.
Tip8 leave the soap in the box till you put it out to sell on the day.
You see can what is happening you locking in the soap fragrance just like the big soap makers do! Packaging Paper bags just big enough to slip in a bar of soap in and seal with a sticker on the top at the point of sale (fragrance inside the paper bag isopropyl and slight bit of say rose oil applied few days before.)
Tip 9 At the point of sale have your range of soaps on display in unsealed bags for customers to pick up an smell you will get a 90 95% sale on the spot and use a credit card tap and go box via your smartphone and the transaction is usually 5 soap bars at a time due to the convenience.
Tip 10 Do not haggle on you price point let them walk as they will come back later , So our price was $5 a bar and our cost was due to our bulk supplies were 95c a bar but you will always have failings that can make big profits like wardrobe and car deodorizers get an organza bags and some old soap shredded via a cheese shredder add some fragrance and let sit in a cardboard box for a week and the put the shedding’s in the bag and seal with a hot melt gun and wow you have a room deodorizers that will last for months and you also can use them in your shower as a loofer so cool sell for $5 ea. plus hang then on a display the smell travels for 20 yards at the markets and draws in customers.
Tip 11 As for novelty soaps for kids Go to the dollar shop and buy the bulk small plastic bags of cars/farm animals dinosaurs/ cartoon characters and make a flatbed soap mold 10x10 bars with the leftover soap batter start filling the mold and embed the plastic toys into the soap with only the top half sticking out they sell like hot cakes (we even put little unicorns in to the top on some of the bars of soap little girls would prop in the isle and stop their mums and we would end up with some big sales. Now if you are at a craft fair or markets and you use a popup tent (a little sneaky trick!) use a few lengths of paper towel and isopropyl and berry berry fragrance and with a peg put one piece in each upper corner of your tent if will make the fragrance travel around the marketplace. You will also come across some resentment from other vendors as they perceive you are taking their money so be aware of jealousy just move ahead as they end up leaving . I hope I have imparted a bit of knowledge as my wife and I are now retied and sold our business from a $500 investment to a profit of $#0,000 in 3 years plus the weekly takings. Make no mistake it is hard work and sometime long hours but well worth it if you want a good life style and old age caught up with us both as I worked till I was 74 years of age. Footnote forgot to mention the 5 gallon drums of olive oil in the menu on bulk purchases and we did few corporate events at xmas very profitable.Use shortening instead of coconut oil /use sustainable palm oil/ and one big tip to test if your soap is ready to sell mix turmeric with isopropyl and a small amount of water to test the alkalinity of your soap --to test wet a soap sample with pure water with a paper towel then with another towel folded small wet it with the solution and wipe the soap if it red not cured if pink just right.

    • @fan2807
      @fan2807 Před 4 lety

I like the trick for testing the alkalinity can you write the dosage of turmeric and isopropyl?

    • @bobmurton5869
      @bobmurton5869 Před 4 lety +3

@@fan2807 Hi the mixture is 2 oz of each and a teaspoon of turmeric in a old ketchup bottle or similar , dampen the sample soap with de mineralized water then with a rubber glove (sterile) then with your finger agitate the water till you have a mucus surface .get a paper towel and fold it into a small square dab the paper with some of the (shake bottle well) solution and it could be red or a pail pink let it settle for say 5 mins and look at the paper towel if it is a good nice pink it is ready to package BUT NOT BRIGHT OR DEEP RED as this is HOT.
Foot note you will work out your testing by testing an old bar of your soap 2-3 months old then bench mark your aging soap process for the future.
      Warm regards Bob

A great presentation nice to see someone that cares about soap making quality.
I hope my experience may help some of your fans.
Hi all some mega tips on how we turned our struggling craft soap making in to a BIG TURN AROUND. After many months of rejections and gouging by street markets organizers my wife and myself had a total rethink on what were we doing wrong. I will make it simple get started get as many samples of different fragrances as possible then you blend them to smell like RED DOOR /ELIZABETH ARDEN AND OTHERS.

Then do a survey with your friends and family on the best 5 fragrances available to you that use then in your soap.
Tip no 1 research the best and the most economical way of making top quality organic soap
Ok tip no 2 make organic dog soap in a twin pack (ours were called WOOF OFF and FINAL COAT) a big big seller to dog lovers also essential oils can injure or kill dogs be careful what you use!
    .
Now tip no 3 chuck out all you soap molds we made ours using pvc thick walled box ducting from electrical suppliers 4in x 2in the one with lid, chuck out the lid not needed cut to a length to fit in an old fridge 20in and seal the ends with ply and or styrofoam taped seal well should get 10 moulds from a length.
Sorry to be so long winded but if you want earnings of $2,000-$3,000 per week read on .
Tip 4 now you have worked out your fragrances and molds now for cheap materials, to make money you have to spend say to start minimum $500 lye bulk bag /coconut oil.20kg/palm oil 20kg/4-5 basic colors(mix and match) 5kg titanium oxide and you are away to start.
Our organic oatmeal milk and honey is our biggest seller (use mainly olive oil and reduce the other oils.
Tip 5 we come to the bulk making of soap safety gear/ make room /big s,steel pots for mixing and all the sundrie stuff for soap making, don't stuff around once you have the batter ready dump it in the molds and get it into you fridge asap.
Tip 6 leave the molds in the fridge for 2 days (don't argue just do it). To test if ready to de mold get a wooden kebab stick and test like a cake at one and to see if is has cured that carefully pull the sides of the mold away from the soap and work the bar out of the mould then just push it out one end.
    Will do another post!

@@fan2807 A good question .When we made soap at the batter stage and you would add the fragrances there is a chance the batch could go off and a disaster could happen .So we had worked out the best temps for us was 24 c for all oils and the lye and water the same 24 c and go easy with the stick blender just a smooth batter. It allows you more time to dressage your soap ,as for putting it in the fridge

So if i do a giveaway she does a giveaway. If I post a pic of my soaps curing she'll do the same right after. It frustrating because I've worked hard educating myself and I know she just started this on a whim. I try to ignore it but it lowkey hurts because I take pride in being original.

You can't make medical claims about your soap. It makes it go rom cosmetic to a drug (medication) which will force it to be regulated by the FDA. I'm not saying that there aren't benefits to certain ingredients, like I love the way clays and other things make the soap and the wash feel, but I wouldn't tell anyone that it cures anything.
I was considering starting to sell after falling head over heels for this hobby recently. There is a lot to consider, and for me who has a full time job and not interested in quitting it, I just wont have the time needed to make it big. There are so many costs that go into it to. In my state it's not just simple registration of local government. I need protection from lawsuit, so its insurance, LLC, and private mailbox coting me nearly 2k a yr altogether in my state. It would be cheaper to not sell
