Did you know that Alfa engineers ran over 80 crash tests on the Giulietta before coming up with the final product. Then in 2010 at the Euro NCAP crash tests it got a maximum of 5 stars, beating every car in its class including the Golf and Focus. Not only that, it was also the highest score in its class ever.
Its has recently been dropped to 3 stars because it doesn't have some of the modern anti collision technologies like radar, blind spot warnings, lane assist etc, but still its an impressive record.

I had a 2010 cloverleaf, glad it was manual as that is what stopped me upgrading to a newer GQV. Traded her in with 108000 miles on the clock after 4 years of ownership and not a single problem. Yet my love of a manual gearbox has finally had to go as I now have a Giulia Veloce. Superb cars. Just wish people would realise the unreliability status is from the 80s and people just don't seem to understand they are just as reliable as anything German.

I hope they are better than the Germans now, because with the Germans, their reliability image is also from the '80s, but the opposite. Having worked for decades in the auto industry I don't have the courage to buy German anymore - but French and Italian? There are still some models around that can be reasonably reliable.

For me stock QV Giulietta 2010+ economy in manual returns around 24-28mpg Urban (in London)
Average 27-32mpg and on motorways around 35mpg. Driven economically but properly at up to 70mph on a motorway for example.

People usually compare Alfa with German cars like those are perfect, but the truth is you have to make compromises with German cars as well, it all depends on what you want and what are your priorities. For me personally German shoe boxes will bring generic design, watered down driving experience and the lack of that special feel when you drive an Alfa. If you ask me, too much of a compromise really.

Back in the 1980s I had a Reault 10 Gordini, I made it into a Gordini because I got a Gordini engine from a BMW bloke who had a workshop where he fixed beemers and built rally cars and hill climbers. I had a workshop with a mate and we fixed VWs and Porches so I built my Renault. It weighed nothing and had a 1300 engine and pissed all over RS Fords. I recently owned 2 Alfa 156s one Diesel 2.4 JTD and a 2 Litre JTS. I also owned a 145 Cloverleaf which pissed all over GTIs of the day, it was hoot to drive. The 156 was a fabulous car, the Diesel was great to go over Europe with, the JTS was a lot of fun and loved the twisty bits. I am an old man now and lust after that car you are driving, those things are good cars to drive, the 1.4 turbo goes pretty well for my needs though. In the JTS I got from Clapham in south London to Warsash in 57 minutes! It was a great drive, I have owned BMWs that were not as good fun, the 3 series was great but the 156 Alfa was a very nice car, for nice people and I prefered driving them.

These are so beautiful. I nearly bought one twice. First time I didn’t buy one is because I had a fiat bravo sport. And checking the giulietta out. You’d be surprised how much parts they share. Even the rare air conditioner vent.
So I didn’t want to spend more money for what was literally the same car. Bought a mk3 Leon.
3 years later I was choosing one of the 3 cars I considered Previously, but this time their hot-hatch variant.
So it was the cloverleaf giulietta. The seat cupra or the 308 gti.
I never chose the cupra because I just gave up the standard Leon FR. So I wasn’t buying the same car b2b.
There wasn’t the right giulietta for me. But there was a 308 gti. So I got that. Had I waited 2weeks and the 308 gti sold. The right cupra and cloverleaf turned up. And I’m not sure what I’d of chose. But more likely the cloverleaf been 6-8k cheaper than the cupra Because 2 of them turned up.

I have the diesel version of this (Sportiva - 2.0L / 170bhp). I very nearly got the QV but, now that I have two kids and need to be a bit more sensible, went for the more economical version.
Do I regret it? I mean, yeah... some days - but the Sportiva really moves when you need it to, and is quick enough to put a smile on anyone's face around winding roads... and it does 43mpg!
Next time though, I'm getting a Giuila Veloce. I've done the adult thing. Bollocks to doing it again :p
