This is one of the most heartfelt interviews I have ever seen on the music scene of the 50s and 60s. Lou Rawls really sets the stage and names the players here. Sam discovered and nurtured a lot of great talent. Thank God for that. Lou was one of those talents and he clearly saw Sam Cooke for the genius and massive talent that he was. Sam's work and death is still felt in the music industry. I wish I knew all the tracks that Lou appeared on with Sam other than "Bring It on Home to Me." They were brothers in more ways than one and that made their work together deep.

One of the most revealing interviews of a legend from a co artist and sincere friend. One who was there and relays a factual story in equable tone. Pivotal moments from emotionally charged perspectives like this are rare and should be cherished. So many interesting insights of one savvy enough not to let the record industry rob him. Cooke's unmistakable smooth creamy voice and his writing ability stand the test of time. Great snippet into an overlooked icon of 50s/60s music

Lew and I met in Anchorage Alaska Lew was working at the mermaid room on forth st I was working across the street at the Trophy room Lew would come over after work and we would close the door and maybe 7 or 8 of us would sit down and role up some joints and get so high. That would go on for a month or so every nite . We would leave around five or so and Lew and l would cruse around Anchorage in my 64 Buick Riviera with the first tape for cars. I remember I had Herbie Mann at the Village Gate on tape . So we had a lot of good times together. But soon he was going back to the Windy City and l to San Francisco . He would call me when he came to town and we would connect and hang out. Around 1976 or so he called me , he was opening at the Fairmount Hotel in San Francisco. I went and met him at his room and then seeing his show was great. I had know idea he was now as popular as he was . When later when I heard of his death I cried like a baby. So long old buddy . Love Jerry

For those intrieguied by this tone of personal insight there is a great 8 disc DVD set entitled "Rock and Roll Graffiti -50's$ 60's." It's from 2007, with a format of about 30 musicians and producers. The artists recall highly detailed accounts of moments from their career. Plenty of inner acting and bouncing off one another's comments and recollections. They also perform their mega hits, and many infamous one hit wonders. Sugar Shack,Dizzy, Sea Cruise Searchin, THen You Call Tell Me Goodbye,,,,on and on. There is a live studio house band, complete with a set of "shoopshoop"girls. If you really like this video YOU NEED to get a copy of Rock n Roll Graffiti. 8 set DVD.
