    The issue with MV is that a lot of the big names who used to make MV plugins (yanfly, some random dude, moghunter) are gone, so those plugins are abandoned/no longer supported. MZ is still getting new plugins from Visustella and others that have new features, that will never be available in MV. The only thing I wish MZ had was unique items, but the flexibility of plugin commands blow MV notetags out of the water.

      however this is coming from Plugin Dev.
      MV plugins not being updated isn't bad imo, as long as they're updated for 1.6.1/1.6.2 they good to use.
      it's honestly MZ that's more worrying imo as they're the ones that have to deal with keeping up to date and not breaking when MZ updates.

      Well at least MV has a huge library of plugins. MZ's library is not even close to it.

  • @amongstus4418
    @amongstus4418 Před rokem +19

    Probably the biggest issue with MZ is Visualstella tbh. The fact the plugins are all encrypted and the devs refuse to let small plugin devs make compatible plugins kind of kill the interoperability of plugins. Meanwhile in MV Yanfly's plugins were great since most people could make them compatible. If you want to just grab a bunch of scripts and go MV is the better option, but if you know JS MZ is probably better.

    Another difference between MV and MZ is the easier porting to Phones, whereas on MV it was harder to port any of your RPG Maker games to phones, but MZ has a feature to export the files needed for a phone version. And for RPG Maker Unite, in some images/videos, it has been shown that there is gonna be an export feature for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, making console development for RPG Maker games much easier from the get go.

    I have both MV & MZ, bought them both while they were on sale last year. I tinkered around a bit and kinda quit because I felt way too overwhelmed with both. I feel like I didn't need both, personal preference though obviously I'd rather use MZ. The point I raise about this isn't my really about my personal preferences though.
    I bring this up to more or less give a bit of a warning to others who may be considering buying either of the two. Make sure that it's something that you absolutely want to learn to do, because if not, you'll be like me who literally burned out within a week even after watching a few short & quick tutorials. Why? Because there's too many DLC to choose from and not enough information about them to get the best idea of what's necessary and what's unnecessary. The biggest issue I've dealt with regarding DLC resources isn't that spending money on them ending up becoming things that were a waste of money, for me the problem is that it became disorienting. What I mean by that is that nothing I tried artistically worked out the way I wanted. I wanted to start small by making a village with simple houses, none of them looked right, not even the inside of the houses looking right because creating the walls and floors always just looked incredibly wrong.
    If I was any good artistically at drawing said structures and layouts (which I am better at doing than using MV/MZ,) I suck at it, but it'd look better than using either of these two (MV/MZ). And it isn't just a lack of confidence in drawing either, it's like I became my own biggest & worst critique of myself.
    Like, I got several ideas for stories I want to write using these RPGM's, but none of the resources I tried through DLC work for me to look right. The aesthetics aren't exactly up to my standards I'd expect out of a game if I was playing someone elses game if that makes sense, like if I were to make a game, I'd want it to be a game that I'd definitely play. On top of that, regarding DLC resources, I don't think I even installed or plugged them in correctly because most of the ones I downloaded even showed up within the selections and I couldn't figure out how to add them even with following a tutorial on how to correctly.
    So TL;DR, for anyone who's thinking about buying either of the two, just make sure 100% that it's something you want to do. It's gonna be a huge learning curve obstacle for you to take on so just be certain before you make these purchases so that hopefully, it won't feel like a waste of money to you.
    For me as I said at the start, I got them at a huge sale discount so it doesn't feel like that huge of a waste for me. Wish you the best!

      @ccl1195 Před rokem +5

      I don't blame you and I fully understand. When I decided to get into this recently, a huge amount of the time I spent at the beginning was in reading about art and perspective, and practicing. Then I spent a lot of time studying the exceptionally made FSM tileset sample maps, which are included with the asset packs. Trying to draw maps in RPG maker used to confuse the heck out of me. I spent a lot of time answering questions like "Why does this map look good?" "Why does this feel bad to move around in?" "Why are all of these walls 2 tiles high, and not 4 tiles high?" "Why did they need to make these tiles line up?" There's a lot of invisible logic at work in visual art.
      Maybe someone should make a video series talking about math, perspective, and symmetry in map design. If you can't visually perceive what's trying to be implied by the tiles, it can be very hard to express an idea coherently in a map. Most of my brain-hurty moments learning this engine were from confusion about tiles and map design.

    • @DahjerCanaan
      @DahjerCanaan Před rokem +2

      @@ccl1195 Yeah, I kinda feel like looking forward towards RPGM Unity, from the looks of it the tile sets appear to connect more smoothely and less janky where-as in RPGM MV/MZ as I've noticed, it takes a tiny bit of guess work to connect tiles. Not too much guess work, just every time I tried connecting walls with the floors and the top part of the walls, it always looked weird and I never knew/ understood how most game developers seem to make it look seamless.
      In RPGM Unity from the looks of it there's more rounded curve tiles so it'll be interesting to see how exactly those tiles connect to each other.
      Heck, just today I downloaded an RPGM MZ games demo and there were so many buildings where the walls clipped through what's supposed to be the roof and some parts of the roof weren't closed off so you could walk on the roof. When I saw that I was like "Yikes! That's not supposed to do that. lol"

    I'm not sure "Wait for Unite" is the greatest advice, even if the product comes out in a timely fashion this year. From what I can tell, it's not going to be a standalone development package the way MV or MZ is--it will be a plugin that you can install on top of Unity, basically bringing a few RPGM features to that software. You'll need to sign up and get Unity first before you'll be able to get Unite.

      Unity is free(until you make a lot of money on your game think around $500k+ in a year) and is also a great triple-A game engine, I don't see an issue. Unless you're talking about having to run both at the same time. Which isn't going to happen it launches as a sand alone ontop of unity(like a normal game made with Unity). So you just have to have unity installed.

    At the moment people have been hating on the current release of RPGMaker Unite but to be honest to me all the bugginess of it so far is worth it simply for the fact that it’s built on Unity (which will let you export to basically anything) is worth it, but then I remember that SMILE had a Unity project exporter in 2018, it’s kinda crazy how underrated it is... the answer was SMILE Game Builder all along!

    Good video. 3 months ago I watched videos by you, ToastyTime, Caz, and some others I've forgotten and was instantly convinced, hands down, to go MZ instead of MV. I am so thankful I did, and it is making my tiny little game design dreams come true. I read all the toxic, insular gripes- "MZ doesn't look any different!" and "Oh no mean people are going to make me pay for things!" all of which were completely unfounded and entirely ridiculous. Yes, I will yell about this every chance I get, as someone who has worked in arts fields. I put MZ on my wish list on Steam and sniped it, and many asset packs there and on Itch during the Summer Sales. Anyone else can do the same. If you really want to make a nice game and you need the ease of use of these engines, spend your money, don't hamstring yourself cheaping out, and get started right now today.
    Looking back today on my 500+ hours of work which is going great, I cannot fathom how behind I'd be now that I have a better understanding of the QoL features that MZ has, and MV lacks. It was confusing enough to learn the 4-layer tile system, and how to map and make things look correct- Imagine if I had to do that in MV? I don't want to imagine it. etc. etc. I frequently run multiple complex parallel processes in MZ and have yet to have problems with the engine chugging, unless I've written an event very poorly and needed more education- which I can quickly get from the RPG Maker forums, or from educational sites on Javascript.
    I would never abandon the stability, performance, and QoL I have today from MZ, and the robust toolkit I purchased from Visustella which was worth every penny and more. Of the few bug reports I have sent them about plugins, they fixed well-nigh immediately. I owe them everything. That's top-tier support, fueled by passion and commitment.
    The one criticism of MZ I will make is the RTP Tileset. There is some confusion there and lack of cohesion of style, which actually did slow down my learning curve with map design- Look at the log cabin tiles for example. I bought MV on sale for like eighteen bucks or something- just buy that so you have commercial rights to MV's much more attractive and cohesive tileset, and you can import it easily into MZ. Lastly, except for MV plugins your project may use, it is extremely easy and quick to import an MV project into MZ- the instructions are in the user guide. I've done it myself, it's completely painless.
    Thanks again Liam- This is Clockwork Figure on Itch, designing Pig Thief Sorcerer. 💯👍 PS: You deserve some deals, you're a great spokesperson for the engine.
