Ever have an argument with someone, and no matter how many facts you provide, you just can’t get that person to see it your way? One big reason for this is cognitive bias, which is a limitation in our thinking that can cause flaws in our judgement. Confirmation bias is a specific type of cognitive bias that motivates us to seek out information we already believe and ignore or minimize facts that threaten what we believe.
So how can you overcome confirmation bias? It’s tricky, because brain research shows that once a person believes something, facts don’t do a very good job changing their mind. Studies show that when people are presented with facts that contradict what they believe, the parts of the brain that control reason and rationality go inactive. But, the parts of the brain that process emotion light up like the Fourth of July.
In this video, Myles dives into the research and offers some tips to combat confirmation bias.
* What is confirmation bias? *
Confirmation bias is the tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one’s existing beliefs or theories.
* What is fake news? *
Fake news is a type of hoax or deliberate spread of misinformation. For a story to be fake news, it has to be written and published with the intent to mislead.

Man this one is powerful! I can't recall how many times I ve faced delusional people with strong biases. It's crazy to me how they can be stubborn
Yep. It's super difficult to see past our own belief systems based on "evidence" we share with others in our social group, or "tribe." In an age of social media splintering us and creating echo chambers where we pass along misinformation that reinforces these beliefs, it's a serious conundrum.
POV: you came to the comments because you're bored of doing work.

If I could name the number of times I've tried to objectively prove my point, only to find that I was wrong in the first place.
It's worth pointing out that this works better in some mediums than others. As he mentioned in the video, we're very social creatures. Often times when I have a verbal debate with someone face to face, I will refuse to back down from my position, but later when I've had an opportunity to reflect on the discussion in private, I'll sometimes come to the conclusion that the other person was right.
In contrast, when I try to argue a point online, I don't have to be extemporaneous with my argument. I have more time to imagine how my audience will react and to develop a coherent argument against that. I can play out a hypothetical debate in my imagination, effectively a debate with myself. In this process, It's much easier to overcome cognitive bias and convince myself that a preconceived notion may be wrong, than if I were having the same argument extemporaneously with someone else, face to face.
Debates online also have the benefit of being drawn out over the course of several days with back to back posts, rather than playing out in one sitting. This gives us an opportunity to reflect on and critique the details of an argument when we're not actively trying to point them out to each other.
And that makes you smarter than most.
Nice use of the word "extemporaneous" i rarely see it used.
@@ShaudaySmith Thanks. It's one of my favorite words.
I'm a librarian at a community college. These videos are perfect for our students. Seriously, you need to get these in the hands of every community college. Would you give your permission to librarians to use these videos in presentations? These are amazing!
Kristen Adkins we love librarians! Thanks for this great feedback. We are hoping to reach a lot of community college students. Please do share and screen our videos and encourage them to subscribe! We have new videos coming out every other week.
While on the whole very good, the fish picture as a preexisting bias at 1:43 could seem to be a religious symbol and demeaning to a large segment of individuals. I would suggest removing and replacing with something else, a cupcake, perhaps?
If I want to believe I've found confirmation bias, then would I be guilty of confirmation bias for finding confirmation bias? :-D Seriously, great video and channel! Best, Shan :-)
Ha! Well played. Thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment! We always love to hear from our audience.
It's been almost 5 years since this video was dropped. It bothers me it doesn't have bajillions of views and ALL THE LIKES. i guess because it ends with a call to self reflection. Most folks don't like to be honest with themselves, let along others. Still rooting for you, Above the Noise.

This channel is really good. Thank you. I'd love to watch a few episodes about religion in science classrooms (relating to vaccines, sex-ed, climate change, and biological evolution).
Thanks for the compliment and your suggestions! We'll keep those in mind as we develop new videos. In the meantime, you might be interested in our video about if teen sexting should be a crime -- it is sorta sex-ed related: czcams.com/video/O8Hdti4jd7Y/video.html

Can you do some videos on poorly released scientific papers/news, and break down why they were bad science?
James Roe good idea - we definitely want to keep making videos to promote science literacy

I had no doubt for many years that Brown eggs were better than White eggs, and I have never checked their nutrition value. and for that, everytime I desired an egg I had to pay more!
Thankfully the egg subject was brought into a conversation (me defending Brown eggs) that made me uncertain, so asked google and sure thing..It proved me wrong! Brown eggs and White eggs conflict was a great lesson for me, not to believe in what I believe to be true and real all the time 100%.

Here's the catch,I won't be awarded by my brain for all those hardworks 😅.
I got to watch this for hw
Interesting channel and good presentation so far!
Even though I got the impression that this channel caters mostly to a US-centric audience I don't mind. Most of the issues discussed here can be applied to other countries/ethnicities though.
As for the presentation I think there's a reasonable balance between engaging visuals and audio. However for me it felt a bit "noisy" at times (which might contradict with the idea behind the channel). Although I guess this presentation style works for most people.
Thanks so much for giving your honest appraisal! It's much appreciated!
"fake news" means gossip then? like it's news that isn't actionable in a practical and positive way?
I predict this channel will grow huge.
I just watched 2 videos, but I can already say that I certainly hope you are right!
LordMichaelRahl thanks for the endorsement and we hope you are right!
Is this overtaken by PBS or has it always been?
I have to do this for school :(
So do I
What grade of ppl watch this for Homework?
For homework too bro 😂
Fake news appeals to the emotions. This is why in the USA we want people to go to a physical voting pole rather than mail in voting because with that effort to go to a physical voting pole we start to think long term. How voting is going to effect us, our family and people we may know. That is why long ago voting in person at a physical location was deemed desirable for long term thinking. That is what my high school government teacher said.
What about an episode on the role of logical fallacies in fake news?
That's a great idea. Logical fallacies are another roadblock to a good, reasoned argument.

Joking aside this is great and id love to see your channel grow. Ive also noticed i tend to be more dismissive of opposing views even though i consider myself openminded so i gotta use those 3 steps more thanks.

3:36 Tomi Lahren is more of a libertarian. Anyway I'm pro-life but the story does highlight something I find real annoying about politics; that if you're x or y you'll go along with every stance of that group. Conservative about everything or liberal about everything including where one contradicts the other. I'm a communitarian but there are some things I have libertarian views about.
apparently this video is inappropriate according to my ela teacher
Really? Why? Just curious to hear.
@@AboveTheNoise You don’t need to change anything, but apparently the word “bs” was too inappropriate. You’re perfectly fine saying that, you don’t need to change anyrhing

This video was pretty biased. Indoctrination with the illusion of promoting free thought.
I can't take anyone seriously, that would take BuzzFeed as a reputable source. Maybe crap like that is why this channel does not have more subscribers.
Oh we like your skepticism and critical media eye! You might like our video on how to spot bad science reporting, check it out: czcams.com/video/ZZYSBlLRxfs/video.html As for Buzzfeed, it def has a bad rep with all their silly lists and quizzes that go bananas on social media. But they actually also have a pretty robust news team-- in fact some of their staff were nominated for a 2018 pulitzer prize for their coverage of murders done by Russian operatives. Here's more on buzzfeed's news strategy: techcrunch.com/2018/07/18/buzzfeed-news/ As for our low viewership-- our videos can drown in research and details, which we realize can be a snooze fest for some. But we hope you check out some of our other content before you write us off 😉
I need all the anti-maskers to watch this video
How does Tomi Lahren changing her opinion on abortion relate to fake news or confirmation bias? Are people required to accept her opinion? Maybe subtly inserting irrelevant shit into your videos detracts from the point you are attempting to convey?
