  • A FedEx Boeing 727 cargo jet successfully landed at Merrill Field Tuesday afternoon, weeks after plans to donate it to the University of Alaska Anchorage were announced to the public. The three-engine jet made two flyovers of the Downtown area at 2 p.m. before circling in for an uneventful short-field landing on the field's 4,000-foot runway, with many members of the public watching from the Northway Mall parking lot just east of the field.

I’ve landed various different types of aircraft at Merrill Field in Anchorage, Alaska over the years I spent in service their, but never in my life would I have thought you could land a Boeing 727 at MRI/PAMR. But I also said, the same thing, when I watched a Lockheed C-130 land to a full stop, then takeoff again from an Aircraft Carrier at sea.

Fantastic videography in this. The shots of the aircraft turning final against the mountain back drop are amazing!

Yep, it's PAMR in downtown Anchorage. This particular aircraft may have been the heaviest aircraft to have landed on this airfield.

That has got to be the biggest control tower 'for a 4000ft runway facility' on earth!
Amazing footage btw! Love the banking shots as it rounds the snowcapped mountains!

Consider there are almost 550 take-offs and landings per day. Small aircraft, under 12,500#.

2:59, was that an army helicopter in the background? I live here in Anchorage and that def looks like a military heli. I'm actually looking at this airplane currently from the Aptel studio hotel :P Wish I could post a pic.

Yes, that was an Army blackhawk. The video didn't show it completely, but there were a lot of safety assets on hand.

3:22 The pilots brake really harsh, the tires smoke a little. Wow, what some well pilots who can land a 727 less than a 4,000ft runway.

It's so atypical for a public American company to "give" anything away, especially an asset. Good work, FedEx.
This is a fine example of a public entity investing in its own future. They do get a deduction, sure, but they also benefit from hiring a few mechanics who trained on real world aircraft.
This is a US company to be proud of. They give back. A&Ps love FedEx. Now, when those MD-11s get old, I've cleared a spot in my driveway...

The plane was most likely ending its life span and would cost more to keep it up then just to donate it for a tax right off.

@@AlaskaMike72 Glad you are still kicking. Haha So what are they going to do with it? I actually have been hanging around this airport. It would be pretty cool to see where people go and what they do. I saw a couple experimental looking ultralights that ascended quickly. Alaska is a cool place.

Man, that first flyover was LOW!! People with north-facing rooms at the Hilton sure got a show on that one. lol What a beautiful plane though. I flew Champion Airlines right up until the end so I could fly on the 727s as long as possible.

We used to get two 27's at CAER a long time ago. Long gone is the era of Federal Express 27's. A300 and a 57 for CAER nowadays. 👍🇺🇸

I was at the airport when they landed, our feeling was FE was giving a nod to Alaska aviation culture, and doing a retirement ceremony for the aircraft with the go-arounds. Not to mention a bit of an airshow. It was pretty cool.

Itll never be able to take off again. The field is too short.

    • @Pamani_
      @Pamani_ Před 6 lety +1

I'm pretty sure if they wanted to they could get it to take off. The runway is 1370m long and the 727 is able to takeoff in less than 1520 meters (source : www.airliners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=453841). If they just take enough fuel to reach Anchorage Ted-Stevens and remove a bunch of unecessary stuff they could make it.
Another idea would be to take the 90° turn from the other runway as fast as possible, possibly cutting into the taxiway to get a few more speed.
