We just held a little celebration for a friend who is 104 years old. It marked 80 years since he was rescued after his Halifax crashed into the Mediterranean on July 17th, 1943. He and 5 other crew members were rescued 9 days later. We asked him what kept him going, and he said hope. His pilot was 20 years old, and he landed the Halifax on the ocean, getting all the crew into the dinghy safely before it broke apart.
The crash site was 300 miles from the Italian mainland and 150 miles from the North African coast. After 212 hours, they were finally rescued by a British destroyer. A true hero and a gentleman.

I was living in Paris 25 years ago when my father made his first trip to Europe to visit.
He was in the 82nd and 101st airborne after WWII and was a historian who later taught high school history.
We went to Normandy and he walked the beaches and walked the cemeteries of The Allies but we were also humbled by the care and respect given German graves. They were just as manicured as the others.
Seeing him get lost in the history as we went from place to place to have his fill of putting all the pieces together.
We missed the last train back to Paris and had to sleep at the Bayeaux Hôtel de la Gare - a seldom used room in the attic of the brasserie at the station. It was an ancient building and we joked as we shared the old bed with what seemed to be a straw mattress and joked how this must have been how it was 50 years hence.
That trip was one of the dearest memories I have of him.
    Miss you dad.

My younger brother. 22 years in USAF. Wife? Marines. Mom? Lived near Sheffield, during WWII growing up, she's gone also. My Grandfather? WWI. Just the preview made me tear up. Will the young appreciate this movie, or will they flock to another superhero movie or Barbie?

In the space of 15 months i've had to say goodbye to both my parents (mum on new years day '22, dad just 3 months ago) who were both in their 90s (mum 92, dad 95) and these 2 people remind me so much of them. I know Michael is a Bermondsey boy, but mum and dad were from just the other side of the thames in Stepney, was childhood sweethearts since primary school and were married for 73 years and since i was born in the '60s didn't move less that 1.5 miles in the area...these people were the definition of cockneys, Londoners through and through.
I'm going to go see this film, even though i know i'm going to cry like a baby just because it'll remind me of them and the stories they've told me over the years.
