  • For this weeks sewing project I am making an Haute Couture dress for no other reason than because I can, and I want to challenge myself! We've recently seen loads of beautiful dresses and haute couture looks on red carpets and fashion weeks and I felt inspired to create a dress of my own that (I would like to think) can compete with them!
    We'll talk a little bit about my inspiration, the approach to the sewing pattern, the fabrics used, and the process of making the corset for the dress.
    This is part one of a two-part series, with the next installation coming next Sunday.
    Time stamps:
    00:00 Intro
    03:26 The design
    06:14 The pattern plan
    11:00 Making the pattern
    13:47 Making a mockup
    18:00 Making the corset
    27:22 The final corset
    I hope you enjoyed todays video, I am already working on my next project so make sure to subscribe to never miss a beat!
    Would love to connect with you~

    I am greatly encouraged to know that I am not the only one who can put much effort into a sewing project, with great expectations that some stage will soon be finished, only to find out that I must start over... and over... and over.... It does take so much patience!

    • @ThrillsandStitches
      @ThrillsandStitches  Před měsícem +1

      It does! But it’s the most rewarding experience when it turns out 💜

    I get so frustrated if the pattern does not fit that I am ready to give up (maybe come back to it another day). I admire how you patiently persevere to achieve a perfect fit. Looks great already, and a beautiful skirt to come, wow.

      Thank you! Believe me I was frustrated 😣 but I was too excited about the project to stop at that point 😝

    This is a gorgeous result so far Elisa! But, to be picky - an haute couture dress would not have overlocked seams and there'd be steel bones, not the plastic rigilene boning used. But I do only point this out so that peeps watching don't then look in on horror at the *real* costs of an haute couture piece - you yourself have taken days to create just the bodice part of what will no doubt be a gorgeous dress! 😍

    • @ThrillsandStitches
      @ThrillsandStitches  Před 4 měsíci +3

      Thank you, that's very interesting and useful info!!! Oh I wish I could afford steel bones. My overlocker gave in halfway through the project (as will be seen in the video this Sunday) so no surprise it is not used in real Haute Couture fashion. I hope you'll tune in for part 2!

    This was very fun to watch. I don't sew (I'm a crocheter), but bought myself
    a sewing machine for Christmas so that I can line the bags I make. I haven't even
    taken it out of the box. However, I'm really enjoying seeing what others can make
    and where their imagination takes them.

    I thought I’d like haute couture then found how much work it is so I put in finishing just to make it look nicer than doing it fast and less finished. When and if I have the time (and don’t need said garment at a certain time) I have found I kind of like doing hand stitching. Boom. Nice to see you back again.😊. Cheers.

    Great video. Something different. Love it. At the end when you said that watching it may help other sewists to grow I had to giggle as I was gutting a neckband for my 3yos cotton jersey tshirt! We're on different levels and different points in our sewing journey but I still love your videos!

    Thank you for this video and showing that you changed your mind regarding the pattern. I love the neckline, I’ve always wanted a ball gown with a rounded bodice top. Where am I going to wear this imaginary ballgown? Imaginary historical fantasy balls of course!

    Haven't got to the end yet, but you didn't mention in the design stage, an underskirt lining. My immediate thought was 'that crin is going to be very scratchy'. Rigilene is pretty useless for boning. If you can't afford spring steel then take a leaf from the costumers book and use zip ties. They're much stronger and give better support.

    Why do you cut away the seam allowance before transferring your patterns?

    • @violetadominguez6632
      @violetadominguez6632 Před 4 měsíci

      Also, when you baste the tulle to the satin layer, won't the stitches be seen? How would this apply to a solid color outer layer to a satin interlayer?

    • @ThrillsandStitches
      @ThrillsandStitches  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I remove the seam allowance to get the exact true shape of my pattern. The seam allowance will be added on again at a later step. With this fabric, the stitches are invisible on the sequinned tule. I would not recommend this on a solid fabric!

    Wouldn't it have been possible to put the boning in the lining? Therefore you could have skipped a lot of hand sewing 😮

    • @ThrillsandStitches
      @ThrillsandStitches  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Yes and no! Because I wanted to catch the sequinned tule in the seams I had to hand sew - I could have put the boning just in the lining of my shell fabric wasn’t transparent :)

    the pattern making needs a different approach. you're better off draping to get pattern on the mannequin rather than using taht horrible white paper pattern, I can see fit isn't good straight away. my real job is a couture pattern maker, and I see this a lot online.
