RARE - Ft. Myers Heil MultiPack Recycling Truck (in action) 11-23-12

- At the time of this video there were only 5 known videos of the Heil MultiPack on CZcams. This makes the 6th. I hope you all enjoy this lengthy video showing the MultiPack in all it's glory! In the beginning of the video you will see manual and automated loading of recycling carts and bins. Then you will see the ASL function and at the end of the video... well... just watch it straight through, and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
IF you absolutely must skip to the end because you are getting bored... please don't skip past the 11:00 minute mark or you'll ruin the surprise for yourself.
This truck is one of three MultiPack recycling trucks running in the City of Ft. Myers. I took a couple hour drive to get this footage, so I really hope everyone likes it.
NOTE: There is some driver training occurring in the video, so you may notice some small bloopers from time to time. Every ASL driver goes through this, no one is perfect when they are getting familiar with a new type of truck.

Thank you very much for the comment! I'm not sure if George filmed much of this truck... he was in a different area of the city for most of the morning. There were probably 25 trucks in the general area (many passing through), so there's no telling what he found.
One of the great things about this truck is how cheap it is for Heil to make. Since it's the same body design as their rear loader they can just simply slap a tailgate on. Great video, I wish they had some of these out here on the west coast

this sure is a unique truck if i ever saw one. looks like a recycle truck and a garbage truck all into one. this truck has a cable winch and a tipper which means it is capable of handling containers (dumpsters) to.

It's all one body... from what I could tell, this is basically a Heil DuraPack Python ASL with a DuraPack 5000 REL tailgate. This truck packs the load from the front and the rear.
I didn't even know Ft. Myers had these! I go to Naples every year and always film their Curotto can, always wondered what Ft. Myers had, haha! Well thanks for posting this find!

Yes, and it was on a Mack LEU613 chassis.
Thank you! After seeing how George films, I think bicycle is the way to go - if the route is close together and not spread out. It's kind of awkward to hold a tripod and ride a bike, but he's got it down to a science. Also it's easier to get ahead of the truck with a bike.

This is so far the best collection method to use for town solid waste divisions! Why use a seperate REL to follow an ASL when you can hav 1 truck that can do both? This method would be perfect for trash & bulk pickup too! I'm very impressed with the fast kickbar cycle during REL dumpster collection! Awesome Footage!!!!

Cool video and unique truck! Watching this though reminded me how bad I feel for the garbage men here in Montreal, since its been -20 Degrees Celcius now for a few days. I dont even go to film anything when its that cold, and im not worried at all about my camera!

wow cool! idk if you know or not, but does the body seperate or is it all one. if it was oll one wouldent that not work when they back the rl part and with asl packer presure on it at the same time? I love those lights that look like 3D moving up and down. Very awesome video 100/10 and a like
Awesome job on the vid! The city really makes good use of these trucks. The Pete looks and sounds really nice, though the lights on the front of the cab are kind of annoying. I think all their trucks had those, right? The last clip is my favorite, they dont mess around with those dumpsters. Crazy how they had one guy on the back and the other working the arm during the first part of the vid.

Awesome footage, and great that they offer crated recycling still, so that both functions get used through out the day. And that was pretty hectic watching him use the kick bar while it was at high rpm at 12:45. Kick bars are far my favorite method of lifting RL dumpsters, and seems to be the fastest too. ll around great video, I have been wondering when one of you guys would film this, and that 2 of you filmed it is even better!

Interesting, never seen an ASL with a rear packer. I drive a Bridgeport ASL splitbody doing trash and recycling, would be nice to have that tailgate for the stuff that won't fit in the hopper.

This is all one truck. I saw plenty of others, but I didn't film them because I had a one track mind to film as much as I could of this truck at the expense of the rest. When you don't see the swamper, he is actually inside the cab.
Think of it as an ASL with the tailgate switched out for a rear loader tailgate. It packs from the front and the rear.

This truck is so awesome! Great find Alan! How come some people have carts and others have only manual bins? How does this truck unload, the same way a Python normally does or is it tip to dump. I love how Pythons work. I finally was able to film my first Python today too.
Very cool trucks these MultiPacks, wonder if they'll ever get front-lift arms hanging over the cab? haha Damn that Python arms pulls back hard and lifts quick! Maybe a bit too quick for a new guy :P Beautiful truck, looks nice in the blue, good diesel engine to go with it - sounded nice from the front in that first dumpster clip. This really is one of a kind, surprised they are not more common for smaller cities. How come they have both crates and carts for recycling? Seems 5:35 was related to a lack of revs due to arm position =] Loved that side shot at 7:15, shows the whole thing and exactly what it is. The shots from the back showing it's an RL with an arm off the side were good too. I figured it was either unloading or dumpster action at the end, hell rough rollbar! haha Must be very loud in person!
Nice you finally got one. i see them every other day in my hometown, although my hometown's multi packs are on an international chassis

My city got trucks like this about a year ago, and they're terrible! They throw trash all over the place, the open tops on them constantly spew out anything that gets picked up by the wind, if there's still trash stuck inside the bins, it's staying there, and all the cost of buying a fleet of these steel behemoths offsets whatever you'd save from not having an extra guy to pick up the bins and dump them in the truck.
Has since been retired but replaced with a new multipak!

Great video! First time I've seen one of these on route. I must admit however, coming from a west coast perspective, this truck is not very practical. I do like it though. :-)

whats the point of paying a groundman to be on the truck? the driver cant get out and dump those cans?
I don't know if they typically run a two man crew on these trucks, I know at the time of this video, one of the crew members was in training.
