      +Mark Maybe. I don't know how much that motorcycle costs, but that custom Ti Firefly with SnS couplers is probably in the realm of $7K. The Merlin ridden by the guy that got hurt looks a fair bit older and even has CX or old MTB style cantilevers. Probably a fair bit less than the Firefly, around $5K maybe? Neither bike had carbon wheels, which would have added up to around $1.5K to each bike.

      I'm so tired of the "muh target fixation" shit. He simply missed the cyclists for the same reason cars miss motorcyclists: you're looking for a big object, you don't see it, so your brain says you're all clear. The cyclists were on the edge of the road with their stupid super thin frames and they just aren't visible against a rock backdrop with complex forms that almost act like a camouflage. It's clear he didn't even see the cyclists until the end and by then it was too late to do anything. Moral of the story: keep your bikes in your mom's driveway and off public roads with fast moving vehicles. If you can't go the speed limit, get off the road.

    it's called target fixation. A motorcycle is going to go where the rider is looking. He came around the corner, saw the cyclists, and instead of keeping his eyes where he wanted to go, fixated on them. It's a hard habit to break. It wasn't maliciousness, it was inexperience.

    • @Pills161
      @Pills161 Před 9 lety +54

      The sad part is he wasn't even going that fast nor was the line for that turn that technical to begin with. Yeah target fixation at it's finest, you can see at 0:03 is when he had his "oh shit I'm not confident enough to carry my current line past them" moment and panicked. If you're an inexperienced rider, the last thing you want to do on a road like this is ride it with your friends filming you, you will always try to show off and ride faster than you're capable and then pull shit like this. Hope the cyclists made a full recovery, I would be hella pissed if I was them, hopefully they got some settlement out of it.

    That was hard to watch. As a motorcyclist, I can see how he froze up, and that is a sickening feeling that you just have to counter. It feels like you can't correct your course, but you have to override your sensations and just shove the bike over. I had a very close call once with a bicyclist on a trail who just looked at me and pushed his bike in front. I felt like I could not turn at all due to the gravel. In retrospect, I could have turned a little more, but I skidded to a stop about an inch from his tire. When he straightened his bike a little after I was stopped it bumped my tire. The guy just felt like he had a right to be there, and I didn't so he cut me off. Even if he were right, I cannot imagine deciding to block a motor vehicle with my body to make a point.

The rider on the motorcycle saw the cyclists clearly and fixated on them instead of focusing on the turn and looking through the turn and holding his line. Yet he saw the cyclist and stayed fixed on them and guess what. Ran the hell right into to them. Watch his helmet and line of sight. He was clearly fixated on the cyclist instead of the dam road. The one time I got worried was passing a cyclist with his hood completely done up... like kenny from southpark. he decided to turn his head around to look at me as i was passing... but in order to do so he had to turn his head right around because of his hood... causing him to swerve right out into my path just as i was passing... which caused me to swerve to avoid him. not good. If this motorcyclist had exercised due care when riding through this turn as required by CVC 23103 then this collision would not have happened. He broke the law. He drove dangerously.
      Bicyclists have a right to use this road. This is actually a very popular road for bicyclists. Anyone who does not expect to find bicyclists on this road is fundamentally incompetent as a driver and should have their license taken away.

      Your bike always tends to go where you are looking. He probably saw them and looked straight at them and froze up. Very easy thing to take place if you lack experience. He could have leaned the bike more into the turn and missed them or stood the bike straight up and apply the brakes or go for the dirt. As you enter a turn you should be looking past your apex and on your "turn in" your focus should be down the next straightaway or in your turn exit. The rider appeared to be looking at the road directly in front of him instead of through the turn.

      1tokeover Sidewalks, bike paths, gyms, tracks, and trails--all options totally disregarded by the sweatier, spandex-wearing road user. The danger is obvious and two fold. First, their toys are not able to maintain most average speed limits. Thus, they increase the risk of being struck by cars and motorcycles which can and do operate at those speeds. Second, the crash protection offered by ballet-uniforms and plastic helmets is less than significant in the event of a bicycle to motor vehicle crash, especially at speed. If someone really wants to make that wager and rely almost entirely on the nerve, patience, and swerving ability of actual motorists on public roads, then they'd better be ready for the consequences that might ensue. And let's be honest, the chances of that aren't exactly as slim as your average bicycle enthusiast (...wishes they were).

It's not like we take it upon ourselves to drive down bike paths or on sidewalks. Yet, especially in the warmer months, you cyclists resort to riding in packs on roads with 30, 35, and 40mph+ speed limits. My only question is why? Why put yourself at risk whilst slowing the flow of traffic for everyone else? Maybe you're just assholes.

    • @Buttnut105

There is a clear distinction between engaging in your hobby and being a nuisance and straight up danger to yourself, at the expense and patience of others. I'm still waiting for a clear, honest answer, that doesn't involve your unoriginal, unimpressive remarks. You can ride anywhere you like as far as I'm concerned. Why bother me with this hobby? Why put me and yourselves at risk with your selfishness? And you think the fact that you're attempting to promote your own health is worth my respect? Perhaps to your surprise, some of us don't need to call upon the patience of motorists to stay in shape. If you cannot understand that, then it's not just your physical health that needs improving.

    As a motorist its your job to be ready to stop for anything in the road. The motorcyclist was riding recklessly and technically it would be his fault even if the cyclists were stopped sideways in the middle of the lane. If you you hit an animal, piece of debris, or small child its 100% your fault even if they're in the road. Saying its the riders fault shows a misunderstanding of the law especially when you consider that the cyclists gave him more than enough room to pass.

    Target fixation is one issue, but his survival reaction was the main cause. You can see him trying to turn the handle bars more into the turn, because he "reacted". That only caused the bike to straighten up more going directly into where he didn't want to go.

      MarkeyDeSad have you ever been hit by a car before? I have, worst experience of my life all because some driver wasn't paying attention. I ended up in the hospital with broken bones and internal organ injuries as well as needed surgery. The driver lied to the cops and tried to get out of it, if i didn't have the wreck on video which the driver wasn't aware of i might have been footing the 150k hospital bill. So yes i do think its fair to go for blood in court after a driver drew blood on the road.

Oh wait, YOU WEREN'T footed with the hospital bill, so again, I don't understand the logic of "take him for everything, ruin his life" over an ACCIDENT. This is why we have insurance.
