    Finally a review of the Ranger! I recently got this model and it's my go-to when I'm out for walks. Yes, it has some heft to it, but I find that I quite like that it is substantial in the hand - but still pretty comfortable. Its width makes it quite square, which I like. My Ranger is a new model, so it has more tools than the one you've shown: The new Ranger adds the parcel hook and a wood chisel as back tools. The Ranger is in fact the slimmest Victorinox model to feature the full suite of back tools (corkscrew, chisel, small screwdriver, hook, awl). Combined with the fact that it has all the cutting implements it's a very dense feature package and I would recommend it over, say, a Huntsman because of that, even though it's substantially more expensive.

      There’s a cool video of someone making an arrow out of a stick of wood. He demonstrates 90% of the tools and shows how great it is for bushcraft.

    This SAK quickly becomes my favourite portable knife: brought ALL resources I really need to my pocket. It came in 1st place in my EDC. Simply amazing!

    The newer Ranger with the full complement of four back tools is really an awesome knife. That's what I'm currently carrying. I needed the chisel just the other day and was glad to have it.

    Got mine from a retailer at the Zürich train station last August for 55 francs. Looks like I stumbled on a good deal 😁

    I love how you always measure the 91mm Victorinox, meticulous! ❤
    Another great review, thank you. Ranger is a beast, I prefer a 2 or 3 layer for EDC but for out in the bush it's hard to beat the Ranger.

    I'd say this would be a great knife for camping, it's got all the tools ( and probably more ) than you're likely to need for that.

    I think it’s size would push this one into pouch carry for me.

    that is a 85 or 86 because it has the half stop screwdriver /bottle opener

    • @fastandcurious
      @fastandcurious Před 6 měsíci +1

      I agree. And the sewing eye of the reamer was introduced in 1985 says SAKwiki 😉

    • @fastandcurious
      @fastandcurious Před 6 měsíci +1

      Dating SAKs is fun. Because the chisel as a backside tool of the metal saw was introduced in 86, we can now safely assume 1985 as production year.
      Why the chisel on the metal file / saw and not on the wood saw is anyone's guess. I think the small screwdriver was already on the backside of the saw. Furthermore on all Vic's both these backside tools are only offered when coupled with both saws. I don't know if any SAK with only either the file or the wood saw to be coupled with a backside tool. See Camper, Huntsman etc...

    On eBay I grabbed a Champion Plus a few weeks back. It's the SwissChamp minus the pliers which makes it the same size as my Handyman, despite having seven layers instead of six.
    The blades had seen a bit of use, both were dull when I got them (Sharpmaker fixed that right up, almost hair shaving sharp now), the magnifying glass (magnifying plastic?) had some scratches, and the scales have pocket wear, but otherwise it's pretty good condition.

    Thanks Slippy. The edge Dan put on my Hercules was scary sharp too. Felt like I could cut myself just looking at it! Great review of the tanner interesting to see what it has compared to the Huntsman or Explorer. Interesting to see how it differs from the latest version.

      This older model - yes. Newer models come with additional back tools compared to the Huntsman: A small 2.5mm screwdriver and a 4mm wood chisel.

    Nice review !
    Anybody knows why Victorinox added a "Camping" logo on this model ?
    The Ranger is a really good model, I am fan of the Huntsman but I would like to get this model (or a handyman, I don't know, but I think a Handyman will be too thick and in my opinion the pliers are more usefull on a Cybertool or a Deluxe Tinker than a knife with several tools for wood.).
    The Ranger is the smaller Victorinox with all the back tool and is a "full" knife : there are the same number of tools on the front and the back. It's so satisfying (like the Climber, the Spartan, the Tinker and super Tinker)
    The Huntsman has an empty place in its back, I will be so happy with a Hunstman with a chisel... or a Deluxe Tinker with the small screwdriver).
    The only trouble of the Ranger may be that it is too thick for classic holsters. It's recommended to have the same holsters as the Handyman or the SwissChamp.

    Nice clear review over all. However you are mistaken in that you either did not open the chisel or the parcel hook. That means you either skipped those two tools or, that SAK model is not a Ranger but a Huntsman. The scales are Ranger, but, that knife model is not. You also misstated the serial number at the end of your video with a 3, and not a 6. I have a proper Ranger and it has precisely 21-22 tools, depending if you count the keyring as a tool. Cheers mate!

    I wish they still put the camping logo on it. Since my old one was stolen from me by my brother and sold for drugs, and the place sold it, I ended up buying another 1. Since it didn't have the camping logo on it, I put some green plus scales on it. The file is different on my new one as well. I am so pissed at my brother. I ended up getting a restraining order against him, since he has always been like this and the cops only kept him overnight, he got community service and I didn't get anything from the courts or the multiple things he stole back. I am happy to have 1 again though.
