not bad drunk Dave.. . that's was real good how edited & put it together. . I first clicked on it thinking it was gonna b some bullshit, but you hooked it up. that was a nice piece.
In real life a Seattle prohibition agent got tired of seeing all of the criminals he arrested back out on the streets and keeping their money so he quit his job and became a bootlegger. Became the most prolific bootlegger in the northwest, he started the first radio station in Seattle and used it to communicate with his organization and coordinate smuggling efforts. He was never caught or charged
Ive never seen this show and have consumed everything I know about it via youtube videos but this guy fascinates me the most of the entire show. The actor is amazing, the character seems extremely well written. And for a drunk man, youve edited this excellently. Really nice work for sure.
I never watched the show when it was on real time, but I'm watching it now on HBO Max and it is Amazing so far,I'm into the 2th season. Michael Shannon is the actor and he is Quickly becoming a favorite of mine.
I always felt the van Alden scenes were he is acting "normal" are the best, especially early on. Later he understands that what he does isn't normal, but early in his arc his psychopathic behavior is displayed without any difference or irritation. That was really great acting.
Remember the film he did with Ashley Judd? BUG? I still haven't recovered from watching it. This guy is a serious actor. I think he would be fantastic in a comedy
What makes his character almost demonic are his soulless, glaring eyes. Like Bela Lugosi and Liev Schreiber (the lead actor of Ray Donovan), he has the stares that can make your knees shiver. He is indeed the best and an ideal player to portray the high-collared, morally uncorrupted Van Alden.
He was such a complex character and this series was so well acted. I didn't realize the actor who played Al Capone was British until I saw him in an interview. Beautifully done. Thank you.
Thank you for reminding me that this was the best show that was ever on television. Had been a while. I forgot how incredible this show was and how binging it was an activity I looked forward to with a child like enthusiasm. Thanks Dave.
This is a truly stellar edit! I love how you cut back to all the references Nelson made, and that the music didn't overwhelm the narrative. Really well done, mate.
what a poetic character arc. In the end he became the instrument of god he always wanted to be through his death the agent was able to get the ledgers to take Capone down
He was a force to be reckoned with based upon his experience in his career/s. A patient man getting pushed around to the point of exploding, and making his patience known to criminal associates that were later aware of his behaviors.
My first impression of Nelson van Alden was that he was a psycho. I wasn’t wrong. Every episode with him in it proved my first impression was right. I loved watching him every week.
When I first saw Nelson Van Alden I was like is this guy one of Elliot Ness's untouchables? Then I saw Van Alden whipping himself with a belt while quoting scripture and said OK this is going to be an interesting character.
The 17(?) fps count makes his movements and expressions that much creepier. He takes on a Frankenstein persona: goodness fated to be eclipsed by a dark reality
4:15 what a slap lol. Its easy to forget how big Micahel Shannon is not sure if it was the casting or some trick of film making, but he pretty much loomed over many of the other actors
Van Alden was my favourite character all the way trough, I was so annoyed when he was interrogated that second time with Capone cause of course Al had plot armour but such a character as Nelson would have gone for the gun immediately and blasted Capone even if he himself could never have exited that room too.
Boardwalk Empire, The Wire, and The Sopranos - three best series so far this century! Complex characters, intriguing storylines, and just the right amount of, but not gratuitous, violence
They seemed to have dropped the ball with him the last season. In fact, they dropped the ball the last season period, but they probably had no idea how to wrap things up.
not bad drunk Dave.. . that's was real good how edited & put it together. . I first clicked on it thinking it was gonna b some bullshit, but you hooked it up. that was a nice piece.
The guy that edited this POS MUST have been drunk.
It would have been good, but the music track is too loud. It's annoying trying to listen to dialog over blaring music. I shut it off after 3 minutes.
Same here👍
Actually he was good at both just that satan won in the end!
Question. Why did Van Alden still claim to be a Federal Agent? Unless flipping puts you back in ?
The great thing about this character was that he was an *awful* law enforcement agent but a FANTASTIC criminal.
Such a surprisingly thin line between the two.
Idiot Savant -- brilliant comment, and Michael Shannon pulls it off flawlessly!
@Mary Watkins: You're so right -- that is the goddamn truth!
M R how is he a terrible person??
How was he an awful prohibition agent? He was very diligent, and vigilant.

Who was he?
@@uppercutgrandma4425 Roy Olmstead he did get caught eventually in one of the first cases involving wire taps but was pardoned by FDR
Not impressive if you know the other teams strats
In my opinion, Van Alden was one of the most dangerous individuals in that series. And the longer the series continued, the more fierce he became.
I 100℅ agree
he was a psycho
Maybe besides gyp rosetti. That guy was fkn looney tunes...and much shorter lived
So fierce he allowed himself to be shot from behind ! Yep awesome
Imagine if Nelson and Richard Harrow had teamed up.....endless body count
Probably one of the best characters in the entire show. Dude shoulda won an award for that role. It was amazing
Surely the single best.
Michael Stuhlberg as Arnold Rothstein was much better.
@@juanjoyaborja.3054 Nahhh, he had different story angles and more time but, he wasn't handled as well by the actor as with Van.
Michael Shannon’s acting is just surreal- Nelson Van Alden is the pinnacle of what a “loose cannon” could be described as.
I am relaxed

You should check Richard and his story as well
Dude just go watch it
I've never gone from hating a character so much than rooting for him so much. What a great character.
Him and Howard from BCS.
@@AK-rv6dq Howard was good though. Nelson was a violent psychopath. But he was arresting people worse than him, which made him seem “good.”
@@juanjoyaborja.3054 they both had redemption arcs. That was the comparison.

"Now George, be reasonable!" Love Van Alden. Second only to Richard Harrow.
Those are my top 2 characters too!
Jimmy #1
Many great characters in this show! I love Nelson, Jimmy and Richard.
Both amazing characters and 2 of my favorites as well. Gotta put Capone in there.
He was such a complex character and this series was so well acted. I didn't realize the actor who played Al Capone was British until I saw him in an interview. Beautifully done. Thank you.
At the end, You see how Van Alden grabbed Capone's little head and shook it like a rag doll? Lol
And then they killed him like a side character

In his last moments he tried to be, at least, what he thought a good man should be. He stumbled and fell, but he *tried.* And that's worth something.
Amen.
And with his last breath Nelson Casper Van Alden returned to Jesus, the side of good, and thus redeemed himself.

i love you drunk Dave. that ending made me smile. thank you for your loving care.
such a good actor on such a good show. unfortunately HBO didn't give it a proper sendoff. they just rushed through the ending.

I am so happy you made this video thanku
Michael Shannon deserves an Oscar for his performance.

Michael Shenon is such a brilliant actor. I recognized him as General Zod from comments.
Nelson definitely had above average strength . You can tell by how he effortlessly throws people around .
It's been a while since I've seen this show, but I remember Van Alden was one of the highlights.
Sean Connery over here. You're the dude now, bro!

One of the most interesting and complex characters to ever be written for TV.
What range Shannon has. An escape artist of type cast. From dangerous killer to Mr Roger's mark he can play it all.
"I'll remember. I'll remember. I'll remember!"
Jimmy Darmody repeated that phrase, not Van Alden.
ILMAO... Your comment at the end was funny as hell...........
My favorite character indeed

Seferino Rino well, you’re wrong.

Great job David....you da man!!
Great edit of another fantastically twisted boardwalk character.
Music volume is up way too high. Never have music in a video where the music drowns out the dialogue
That was awsome dave
A bizzarre character who still acted like it was the 18th century. He had that very old obscure manner where he had no emotions with anything
Well done. Compelling and rich.
Loved your last Quote Drunk Dave.
Damn near ripped the head off the agent he slapped!!
One of my favourite characters in any series.

I wonder if, in the Boardwalk Empire-verse, it was Van Alden buried in Capone's vault--boy, that would give Geraldo Rivera a shock...
Bravo. Nuff said.
Van Alden was not descent case ......he rose to be who he truly was,he found himself and freed himself from living a lie
Great work drunk dave
