Kia Niro EV Software Update

  • You can easily update the Kia Niro EV touchscreen software in Canada and the US! It is easy to get the latest user interface, map software, and firmware updates. Just follow the steps in this video.
    My 2019 Niro EV had the original head-unit software from April 2019, and I wanted to get the latest version for a refreshed interface and better performance. Fortunately, Kia’s map software Web site was updated with a new policy that makes the software 30$CDN + shipping instead of the old 250$US price! Even better, if you own a 2020 Kia in Canada, then it is free to download!
    * UPDATE 1: There is a new site for getting the updates for free, update.kia.com and update.hyundai.com. Please see my channel Community post: • Post
    * UPDATE 2: I missed an option when making this video. You can display your vehicle speed on the touchscreen when in map/navigation mode. Go to Navigation, Settings, Information and check the box to display vehicle speed.
    Thanks to Richard Wood for pointing that out!

    So i have some cool news. The updates can be downloaded for free from update.kia.com/US/EN/Main starting in July per MNsoft help center. As a note i am in the USA. Email from MNsoft below.
    "Thank you for reaching out to us with your inquiry. I will be more than happy to assist you.
    The free map updates for your vehicle will be available in July for Version 14.5 at this website....
    update.kia.com/US/EN/Main
    There has been a delay on finishing the new download program due to recent events. That is the reason why if you want to update for Version 14 you will need to purchase the SD card for $25.00 plus shipping and handling. I am very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
    Thank you again for reaching out to us! We appreciate your patience on the release of the new download program."

It is important to note that if you have lots of construction and changes in your area, like here in the Montréal area, then Google Navigate/Google Maps and Waze are far superior because they account for these changes, almost in real time. lots of good improvements. music play progress bar on the new update changed to "phase out" bar instead of straight bar. POI is a huge improvement over previous release including the distance bar and aside from speed limit it now shows speed of your car. 3D and overall color presentation is much to my liking. For HK system, it seems to have "more" bass in lower volume. overall, I love the improvements. hope in next updates, I like the system to turn off when I turn off the engine instead of turning off when the door is open.

      Kia really needs to get their stuff together and homogenize things in North America. They should make the US and Canadian trims the same, with the top trim made like here in Canada, with everything, and the lower trim like in the US, and they should make the updates free to download for older models not just for the 2020 model year. It would make things so much easier for everyone.

I rang Kia and a lovely young lady told me it’s all for free on the web, all I needed was a sizeable USB stick and follow the very clear online instructions. However you do need a lot of space on your hard drive to download the file onto before transferring to a USB stick 50 gigabytes. 🇬🇧

    Having Gas Stations available in navigation could be good for many things: finding fuel for a gasoline and/or diesel generator, finding gas for a lawn mower (I have an electric mower), buying a gas gift card for a friend (I do this each Christmas for a friend of mine), getting gas for a friend's car that ran out, or wanting to meet another person at a nearby gas station of your choosing.

    • @EV-olution

      The update is not for the vehicle management, it is only the navigation unit, including GPS, Modem and uCom. The GOM does use the navigation to calculate the estimate so that is most likely the reason for the change.

    Thank you very much for your videos. We have been debating a switch to full EV for some time and I think your videos might just have pushed us over the edge. We have a test drive of the e-Niro later this week.
    Quick question: you said that you use Android Auto 100% of the time; why, and is that still the case following the update? Wondering whether Auto has better usability/features or you just prefer the design. I use Google maps for all my navigation currently and love it, but the bit you showed us here looked great - especially the view that tells you which lane to get into.
    Second quick question, are software updates not delivered over the air via the car's cellular connection? I noticed the Update button on screen, but you said that 2020 owners need to download from the website and transfer the file across?
    Finally, I hate to do this, but the dates in your subscriber scenes probably meant to say 2020 rather than 2019 :)

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Před 4 lety +1

      Good morning and thanks for the comment. Regarding the dates in the video... yes, I must have been really tired when I reviewed the edit the last few times and completely missed the errors 🙂... Oh well.
      I am glad I could give the EV virus to another person 😉 I am sure you will love the e-Niro.
      Regarding how the Niro updates, both the 2019 and 2020 can only be updated with the SD card (2019), or USB (2020) installation method. Even though the Niro has cellular connectivity it does not do over the air updates; I wish Kia had gone that route, but they did not.
      As to why I use Android Auto instead of the built in nav system: Android Auto is far more precise because it incorporates construction closures and openings almost immediately. Right now, in Montréal, Québec, the temporary highway closures happen on a daily basis because of major infrastructure being built. If this was not the case then I would give the built in nav system more of a try because I also like the large lane indications; It is quite good, but Google Navigate/Maps and Waze are the best for my needs right now.

    First thanks once again for making these great videos but for the owners of a Niro EV 2020 to get the free download you will need to have a 64g memory card to do it.

      @EV-olution  Před 4 lety +1

      Bonjour Eric. Thank you and you are correct; the download you get for the 2020 needs to be put on an SD card. The Niro will only update via SD and the download you get is pretty much the same size as my 2019. I backed up the contents of the SD card and it was about 64GB. There is no real differences in the update method between the two model years other than the 2020 being able to download the files, the SD slot location in the car, and obviously the interface due to the 10.25" screen. I don't think I will be making a video about this again because it was very long to make due to the recording time and multiple recording sessions. It was the most time consuming video I have made since starting in June 2019. Merci pour l'offre. 🙂

When you showed us the instruction book that came with your update I thought I could read all the models covered included my 2016 Kia Soul EV. I just recently installed the same update and now have some problems that I've reported to Kia. They have acknowledged it is a known problem and are working on an updated version they say will be shipped to all affected for free when available. I don't know if this update will affect your car the same as mine but wanted to let you and others know. When I select EV mode on the main display to see SOC and range it has displayed ZERO for both while at the same time on the dashboard display, the GOM still reports the range. I fixed it by ejecting and reinserting the sd card but then a couple days later it returned to zero on the head unit. Since there were several new features and displays included I'm not sure if there are any other issues involved in this known bug. I'm happy to report back here once the new update arrives. Keep up the good work!

      Hello. I am not sure about the spec of the e-Niro version 4 and it depends on your country; in Canada the specs are different, but if yours is a UK spec 2019 and you have the 8" touchscreen with UVO navigation, then there should be an SD slot like in my video. If you have a 2020 then you have the 10.25" screen, there is no SD slot, and it would update via the central USB port.

      I received a post on one of my Facebook shares where someone says they have an issue with CarPlay when they plug in their phone too quickly after staring the car. Andoid Auto does not do this. I am curious to know, I asked the other person, what version of iPhone and iOS do you have?

      EV-olution I think my iPhone is an eight. It’s definitely kind of old and I’m not a real tech guy but I do notice sometimes when I plug it in at first it either takes it a couple seconds or I have to unplug and then replug but I also have a crappy cord. But to be honest that is something I noticed with Apple CarPlay it doesn’t always initiate with the first calling of its name so to speak. I got the EX model here in the states which is the cheaper one because I did not want to sunroof as I am 6 foot six and need all the headroom possible. Plus it’s 6K cheaper.
