Fun Fact: Gru was supposed to have huge muscular henchmen at first but as this was Illumination’s first film, the animators were working on a restrictive budget and as a result made these tiny, yellow pill-shaped minions.
And the rest is history

Gru is actually a better villain than most animated villains just not by success rate. His minions are not treated as nameless henchmen that exist only to further his plans, Gru knows them all by name (for example Stuart) even though they mostly look the same he knows exactly which he is talking to. When he had no money he gathered them all around and recommended they seek other employment options. They responded by pitching in their money. The fact they even had money means that Gru was actually paying them to work for him and in return he had their loyalty as they chose to continue working for him without bank funding

Despicable Me is one favorite movies, just to warn you illumination isn’t known for making good movies but there are some diamonds in the rough.

This movie gets a bad rep from how people hate the minions and the memes related to them, and the "2 dimensional jokes"; this reaction made me realize that people can have drastically different opinions, and they just want to enjoy things and have a laugh, that or I think mine and others [childhood] nostalgia is blinding
I love the fact that as soon as the girls get captured, we get proof that Gru is a legit badass super-villain. He's incredibly capable, normally he's just more worried about it being fun than it working

You know it is refreshing to see a fresh reaction to an Illumination film. Despicable Me is a really cute and funny film. It is really cool that you had fun and that is a way to connect with your sisters.

Despicable me is such a great movie! My favorite part of this movie is the relationship between Gru and the girls. I really like when Gru goes to the park with them and he starts actually having fun! The minions are so funny too! I remember when I was little, laughing like crazy at the minions. Great movie!
The theme song for Gru is just so cool.
The joke with Dave attempting to get another good night kiss from Gru but he notices it, has to be a reference to Snow White where Dopey attempts to get more kisses from Snow White but she just gives him a second one but not a third.

@@drakeredwingofficial well everyone has different opinions. Me (17 years) & my lil sis (12 years) enjoyed the movie in theaters🥰 our mom didn’t really care for it but then again, she’s not really into cartoon/animation movies.
I like this movie, but man do I despise the minions.
Also I hate how it overshadows Megamind which came out the same weekend, great film.
In this movie specifically I don't mind the minions, but in the rest they're really annoying. Becoming a really big thing made them all the more annoying

So glad you're doing this - I like all your reactions but your pure enjoyment watching these animated Pixar, Disney etc for the first time makes being a subscriber so worth it. Keep up the Despicable Me series, parts 2 & 3 plus the Minions movies. You won't regret it; especially the opening scene of Minions detailing their origins which is, I think, still just as hysterically funny now as the first time I saw it.
The minion butt part still kills me. 🤣😂

I actually watched Despicable Me much later than it’s theatrical release, way after the home media release even. Reason, it didn’t seem an appealing flick to me at the time. But, all that changed when the following sequel came out. Long story short, I had fun with Despicable Me.🙂

I find that the first movie is a lot better than any of its sequels. It just became a bit of a cash cow for illumination once minions became a popular thing.
An interesting movie that came out at the same time and was pretty similar was Megamind. It’s really really good.

Even though Illumination Entertainment is a late bloomer, it really pays off because of the breathtaking animation.
While their movies aren't really quite there in terms of objective quality, it's honestly impressive how polished and colorful their movies look and how visually appealing they are despite making on them on much lower budgets than comparable animation studios like Pixar and DreamWorks (though both studios make much better movies nonetheless)
I really liked this movie as a kid. It had lots of heart and humor and taught me a little about the wonderful world of parenting. Plus the minions are adorable!

Hey Cody, if you’re looking for suggestions for what to watch next, two movies I have in mind are “Wolfwalkers” and “The Tale of Despereaux”, they’re both beautifully animated and both are incredible stories.
Right before he said animated version of Dolores umbridge, I was thinking the exact same thing.
Now that I think about it She does look like a animated Umbridge I don't know if either Harry Potter got the inspiration or Despicable me did it first
Honestly when I first saw the movie I never expected it would be about a villain becoming a genuinely caring father and it’s so heartwarming to see. Especially in the other 2 films.
