My dads boss actually confronted him when he was promoted to a professional position that required dressing up. He would just wear the same old stuff he would wear when “dressing up” for church. Baggy trousers that didn’t fit, cheap button up shirts or cheap polos. His boss was actually the same size as him and told him to come to his house. We drove out there and he came out of his giant garage with quite literally at least 100k worth of his old professional clothing. All older brooks brothers, Armani, Ralph Lauren, and stuff like that. My dad actually still wears all of it. Went from looking sloppy to looking great. As a kid I thought he looked stupid in those clothes. As an adult I’m jealous.

Im currently rebuilding my professional wardrobe. I've spent the first 15 years of my career in a technical role and will be transitioning to a white collar role in the summer. I've started changing my style now and I feel like Ill be able to transition with ease. Thanks for the advice.
As a paramedic I wear a uniform as my professional attire and thus have to conform to a company uniform policy. So while I can't bring in my own pieces to my career, what I can do is make sure my uniform looks and works as best as I can make it. I've seen the opposite of this in my profession too. Co-workers coming in looking sloppy and unkempt. Point is, regardless of one's profession, know the dress code, and meet or beat it. Just taking the time to give a damn already gives one a head start.
Eric… May sure your uniform fits. If you are wearing boots, shine them. Make sure your uniform is starched and pressed. Invest in a rotation so that they never look faded and worn out. Try to have at least 5-7 uniforms to keep in rotation. They’ll last longer. All of these things may take up your time or cost a bit more but it’s worth it and you’ll feel great!!

Love this one too. I work at place that has a pretty casual dress code and I’m the only one that wears a suit (no tie to try to dress it down lol) every day. I do it because I feel like I work harder in the suit. It’s so true that what you wear and how you see yourself affects how you perform. I love when ppl say “I’d like to say are looking sharp, but you look like this every day so it’s not really all that sharp for you”. I literally get that one or some variation of it all the time. Compliments like that really do as much if not more than how I feel when I leave in the morning.
Interchangeable options is my philosophy. Mixing and matching and color coordinating is so much fun for me, and sets me apart, gets me lots of compliments. It's a little intimidating at first, if you have to do something, then you might as well be the best dressed person doing it.
Since I arrived at 55 years old, several years ago, I've been building a gentleman's wardrobe. My wife calls me a clothes horse. I only buy garments that are top quality. I spot something l like. Then wait for it to go on sale and pick it up at a discounted price. Everything goes to my tailor to get fitted. Some of my favorite finds have come from thrift stores. You can find unique sport coats, neckties, and dress shoes of the highest quality for almost nothing. Be sure to visit your tail tailor for for proper fit. Also, bespoke is the ultimate for your own style but expensive. Between the two you can have a prime wardrobe for a decent investment. Cheers 🥂
If someone took the whole “dress like other people at the office” advice in the new tech industry as an entry level employee, they would go into so much debt. Literally everyone wearing 7-10k otr suits if not 15-25k suits from places like Brunello cucinelli. Though you could be smart about it and buy from designers who essentially copy cat their line from the previous season and buy it on sale. Eleventy comes to mind. You’d want a bunch of herringbone and glen plaid cashmere unstructured jackets for the colder months, and linen silk cashmere/wool blends for the warm months. Lots of plain sea island t shirts and plenty of cashmere turtlenecks or cable knit crew necks. Cordovan or suede derby’s, Chelsea boots, or balmoral boots. Broguing optional. Braided belts. Plenty of pocket squares. And for some reason only wear a white button down poplin as a dress shirt. Couldn’t tell you why. But it’s a thing. Rarely see anything else. As for building a standard professional wardrobe, if you want the best bang for the buck you should simply get 3 or 4 perfectly tailored suits. Charcoal, navy, light and or mid grey, and finally mid blue or a darker blue. With those color combos you can mix and match every single suit together turning 4 2 piece suits into 16 different outfits. If it’s a 3 piece suit the options go up even more. At least one nice coat, preferably in a charcoal or dark blue. If you splurge on tasteful shirts and accessories like socks, ties pocket squares, etc then you can vary your outfits even more. A charcoal trouser with a dark blue jacket and a dark shirt looks completely different than the same with a light colored shirt. If you add sweaters it changes up even more. And while I think double breasted suits, pinstripes, textured fabrics, and checks are beautiful, it’s not a staple. You want a standard professional wardrobe to consist of things you can always wear any have no reservations. If you have money though disregard all of this and buy whatever you want as much as you want. You can create your own image. Become something other people emulate.

Recently, as I'm becoming an adult soon, I've been watching all of your videos about upgrading style so that I can rebuild my wardrobe into something that makes people take me more seriously and hopefully is a conversation starter - something I'm incredibly bad at despite near memorising all of yours and Aaron's videos on the topic from watching them so many times. Learn how to sew. My mom worked at a fabric store as a kid and I sat in on lessons as an necessity. As a man I didn’t disclose I knew how to sew but when I got serious about how to look and dress with style but spending the least amount of money, I bought a sewing machine. I went to thrift stores and found great pieces and Tailored to fit me. I was able to Tailor polos, dress shirts, chinos and everything. Now 75% of my wardrobe is thrifted pieces that look amazing and high end just because they fit properly. I have a director position in a company and make well over 6 figures, I just enjoy the thrill of the hunt at thrift stores finding name brand pieces and making something fit myself. People at work think it’s expensive clothing although I only paid 15 bucks for a Versace jacket I tailored myself. 😂

Terrific video and informative. Totally agree that you should spend more on your clothes that may be altered. I just lost 30+ lbs and my tailor/clothier altered all my items to fit at NO cost and at the same time I re-payed the favor by buying new items to update my look. Love the idea of having a few jackets, pants and shirts that are interchangeable, do this all the time and have a new look each time. Keep up the great work love the channel!
An awesome video! Here is my two cents about the colors in the wardrobe. A small number of people have balanced and vibrant skin tone, and look great with most colors. A larger number of people have a skin tone too pale, too yellow, or too reddish brown. The pale can use pastel colors like lavender around their face to look better. The yellow can use magenta or fuchsia colors around their face to look better. The reddish brown people can use navy blue or midnight blue around their face to look better.
Wear your existing dress shoes! Great advice. Don't collect clothing or shoes. Wear clothing. Wear your shoes. If you are not wearing it, donate it or sell it. A great video. Thank you.
Very nice. I did almost as well on a G.A. Dunn & Co. tweed overcoat. $170 on eBay. $120 in tailoring. This overcoat is older than I am (1930s or older), built like a tank, and will almost certainly outlast me. And thanks to tweed coming back into style, it looks both timeless and trendy.
I work from home and always dress for business. It helps to shift my brain and my focus that it's time to go to work. Even my two young sons understand why Dad is wearing a suit even though he's not going far. And when I drop them at school and pick them up I get weird looks from the parents in yoga pants and cargo shorts.
Got my first style compliment at church yesterday, was told i was better dressed than the pastor (he wears a suit, but without accents like pocket square or tie)

And, my gosh, the OODA Loop: your military leanings are readily transferrable to the style conversation. I am excited to explore this further in my teachings. I am continually retooling my professional wardrobe. I have shifted my paradigm of personal style, veering away from the uniform, regimented looks of classic menswear (I was a devoted disciple) and letting my right brain call the shots, opting for sports jackets, shackets, and workwear in colorways and patterns that elevate my style while simultaneously projecting "all business." It's a journey, right?
The only thing I disagree with is trying to blend in. I prefer to stand out. Not to look like a clown or inappropriate. But to always take things up a notch from where everyone else is, and preferably in a subtle way. I like to make use of colors, fit, and quality as my weapons.
I got military surplus 'parade shoes' for I think around £20-30 UK pound sterling. They're pretty good in general, and amazing for the price. I work in teaching so the clothing demand is professional but hands-on practical, it's technically an academic position but comes with labour demands circumstantially.
I work in a very chill environment. Jeans and tees and sneakers are the norm. But now thanks to RMRS and some shopping I am wearing at least slacks, dress shirts and good shoes/boots (GOD I LOVE BOOTS NOW). Am struggling for a promotion, but hey at least I do know I'm the best dressed dude in my department :D

Great video mate, My Professional (Semi Formal) Wardrobe so to speak is still being developed and fine tuned to suit me better (no pun intended) day in, day out. Interesting Story: My Touch Football Team which I founded in 2021 and manage is called Razzle Dazzle, with our mascot being a Razzle Dazzle Naval Warship. Which were used in WWI and (WWII to an extent) and were made invisible to sonars and radars by having Black and White striped patterns painted onto the ship that defected any and all sound pulses sent out by sonars or radars.
I love your channel, I just found it and subscribed. I love my own fashion, but I dress my husband he’s a professional and has his own company. Most of the time people don’t really see him but there’s times when he hast to go out for his job to other businesses, I always dress him for the occasion and I take all your tips and tricks. He doesn’t mind at all that I put things together for him because he really doesn’t know how I buy all of his clothes and I buy good quality clothes he has a minimal classic wardrobe. He gets compliments all the time on what he wears . It is important to show up well-dressed In any occasion. I think it shows that you have self esteem. L😊The world has become too casual for me. Since he’s the boss also in his company, he hast to set a standard for the other men.
You forgot to add “be careful of losing weight or gaining” because your “perfect” fitting clothing will not fit anymore. That’s a problem I have throughout the seasons. OR as I get older and metabolism gets extremely slow.
This is true. I’m a rather big guy but smarter than my colleagues but they look the part because they dress well. I’ve been really starting to take my weight more seriously.
Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. (However environment and culture are also factors.) I like the thought that you might dress for the way you seek to be treated. 🕺

When I moved from San Francisco to Bangkok I noticed the Thai wore dress shirts a lot, and ironed everything- even their jeans - with a crease. I thought it was dumb and didn’t conform. I also spoke my mind. I didn’t value or respect their culture, I loved it but didn’t value or respect it, and I wasn’t successful in my endeavors. In New York City, where I moved to later, everyone wore a suit and tie. It was required. This time I conformed. I had to. I still wasn’t successful, but I had less resistance and was happier because of it. Back in CA several years later and no one wears a suit and tai. I thought overdressing would be ok. The guy from NYC. Nope. Now I rebuilt my wardrobe again. (I buy a lot of stuff on eBay.) I always tried to be fashionable, but my fashion was out of sync with my environment. Antonio’s videos always acknowledge that circumstances vary, but that you can be yourself and have your own style and not put a stink on your environment and the people around you. It’s not easy if your an eccentric type, but still possible. I wish I saw these videos 30 years ago.

I recently purchased a Joesph Abboud from men’s warehouse(made in USA w/Italian material) that’s what attracted me to it. Problem is the arm holes are too big, making the jacket lift too soon as I raise my arms. Is this something a Taylor can adjust??? If not , I might as well return it, spend another 300$ or so and do an MTM jacket. . I was recently gifted a Brioni in 42R and its AWESOME! Arms move freely.
I dress for the role I want, not where I am. So I dress as well as my boss and he often comments on my wardrobe. A week back I dressed in pants and a waistcoat and he commented on that and said that perhaps he needs to get himself one or two of them.

I can't remember the last time I saw some one dress "professionally" as in a suit & tie. Where I live it must be 1 in every 5000 men, even in London the capital of the UK there was not a great deal like there used to be.
On December 1st, I attended a holiday party at a law firm. *Most* of the men were wearing suits and ties. Most of the rest of the men were wearing blazers or sports jackets, dress slacks, and ties. I saw a couple men without ties. I saw *one* man wearing a sports jacket, necktie, and jeans. Anyone dressed worse than that was a caterer, DJ, or similar (and the guy in jeans might have been someone's +1).
I have become an amputhey, understand, it is difficult to find clothing to fit with what You are saying when your leg is of a Different size in You gain some weight. What is your suggestion?
This has more to do with upbringing and family and class status. It's like if you grew up poor, you didn't go skiing. You did not have people who wore good suits. This is a hard thing for people to fake it,till you make it.
Great video! Great tie-in with the armed forces! I do criticize your recommendation to use a credit card to buy clothes you can't afford. You make the opposite statement later on, but clothing is not something to go into debt over.
I think the situation is a bit more nuanced. If someone is graduating from college and going into a career that requires a certain wardrobe, then going into debt in order to meet the minimum requirements of the new job is necessary. For example, an attorney might start his career with no savings, lots of debts, and a requirement that he have several suits in order to meet the expectations of his bosses, his peers, his clients, and the judges and juries he practices in front of. That said, for someone like me who is middle aged and has to replace their wardrobe due to weight loss (or weight gain), there is no way we should go into debt.

As a man I didn’t disclose I knew how to sew but when I got serious about how to look and dress with style but spending the least amount of money, I bought a sewing machine. I went to thrift stores and found great pieces and Tailored to fit me. I was able to Tailor polos, dress shirts, chinos and everything. Now 75% of my wardrobe is thrifted pieces that look amazing and high end just because they fit properly. I have a director position in a company and make well over 6 figures, I just enjoy the thrill of the hunt at thrift stores finding name brand pieces and making something fit myself. People at work think it’s expensive clothing although I only paid 15 bucks for a Versace jacket I tailored myself. 😂

Terrific video and informative. Totally agree that you should spend more on your clothes that may be altered. I just lost 30+ lbs and my tailor/clothier altered all my items to fit at NO cost and at the same time I re-payed the favor by buying new items to update my look. Love the idea of having a few jackets, pants and shirts that are interchangeable, do this all the time and have a new look each time. Keep up the great work love the channel!
An awesome video! Here is my two cents about the colors in the wardrobe. A small number of people have balanced and vibrant skin tone, and look great with most colors. A larger number of people have a skin tone too pale, too yellow, or too reddish brown. The pale can use pastel colors like lavender around their face to look better. The yellow can use magenta or fuchsia colors around their face to look better. The reddish brown people can use navy blue or midnight blue around their face to look better.

I picked up a Hugo Boss suit on EBay. Immaculate. $180. $75 in tailoring. $1000 off the rack suit.
Very nice. I did almost as well on a G.A. Dunn & Co. tweed overcoat. $170 on eBay. $120 in tailoring. This overcoat is older than I am (1930s or older), built like a tank, and will almost certainly outlast me. And thanks to tweed coming back into style, it looks both timeless and trendy.
I work from home and always dress for business. It helps to shift my brain and my focus that it's time to go to work. Even my two young sons understand why Dad is wearing a suit even though he's not going far. And when I drop them at school and pick them up I get weird looks from the parents in yoga pants and cargo shorts.

I got military surplus 'parade shoes' for I think around £20-30 UK pound sterling. They're pretty good in general, and amazing for the price.
I work in teaching so the clothing demand is professional but hands-on practical, it's technically an academic position but comes with labour demands circumstantially.

I work in a very chill environment. Jeans and tees and sneakers are the norm. But now thanks to RMRS and some shopping I am wearing at least slacks, dress shirts and good shoes/boots (GOD I LOVE BOOTS NOW). Am struggling for a promotion, but hey at least I do know I'm the best dressed dude in my department :D

Interesting Story: My Touch Football Team which I founded in 2021 and manage is called Razzle Dazzle, with our mascot being a Razzle Dazzle Naval Warship.
Which were used in WWI and (WWII to an extent) and were made invisible to sonars and radars by having Black and White striped patterns painted onto the ship that defected any and all sound pulses sent out by sonars or radars.

Most of the time people don’t really see him but there’s times when he hast to go out for his job to other businesses, I always dress him for the occasion and I take all your tips and tricks. He doesn’t mind at all that I put things together for him because he really doesn’t know how I buy all of his clothes and I buy good quality clothes he has a minimal classic wardrobe. He gets compliments all the time on what he wears . It is important to show up well-dressed In any occasion. I think it shows that you have self esteem. L😊The world has become too casual for me. You forgot to add “be careful of losing weight or gaining” because your “perfect” fitting clothing will not fit anymore. That’s a problem I have throughout the seasons. OR as I get older and metabolism gets extremely slow.

When I moved from San Francisco to Bangkok I noticed the Thai wore dress shirts a lot, and ironed everything- even their jeans - with a crease. I thought it was dumb and didn’t conform. I also spoke my mind. I didn’t value or respect their culture, I loved it but didn’t value or respect it, and I wasn’t successful in my endeavors.
In New York City, where I moved to later, everyone wore a suit and tie. It was required. This time I conformed. I had to.
I still wasn’t successful, but I had less resistance and was happier because of it.
Back in CA several years later and no one wears a suit and tai. I thought overdressing would be ok. The guy from NYC. Nope. Now I rebuilt my wardrobe again. (I buy a lot of stuff on eBay.)
I always tried to be fashionable, but my fashion was out of sync with my environment. Antonio’s videos always acknowledge that circumstances vary, but that you can be yourself and have your own style and not put a stink on your environment and the people around you. It’s not easy if your an eccentric type, but still possible.

I can't remember the last time I saw some one dress "professionally" as in a suit & tie. Where I live it must be 1 in every 5000 men, even in London the capital of the UK there was not a great deal like there used to be.
On December 1st, I attended a holiday party at a law firm. *Most* of the men were wearing suits and ties. Most of the rest of the men were wearing blazers or sports jackets, dress slacks, and ties. I saw a couple men without ties. I saw *one* man wearing a sports jacket, necktie, and jeans.
Anyone dressed worse than that was a caterer, DJ, or similar (and the guy in jeans might have been someone's +1).

This has more to do with upbringing and family and class status. It's like if you grew up poor, you didn't go skiing. You did not have people who wore good suits. This is a hard thing for people to fake it,till you make it.
Great video! Great tie-in with the armed forces! I do criticize your recommendation to use a credit card to buy clothes you can't afford. You make the opposite statement later on, but clothing is not something to go into debt over.
I think the situation is a bit more nuanced. If someone is graduating from college and going into a career that requires a certain wardrobe, then going into debt in order to meet the minimum requirements of the new job is necessary. For example, an attorney might start his career with no savings, lots of debts, and a requirement that he have several suits in order to meet the expectations of his bosses, his peers, his clients, and the judges and juries he practices in front of.
That said, for someone like me who is middle aged and has to replace their wardrobe due to weight loss (or weight gain), there is no way we should go into debt.

My industry commands that we're not rocking the suit and tie and dress shoes, but more that we can wear clothing that's attractive, the fit is good, and we present ourselves well.
