  • Taking the latest BLI steam offering out for some break in laps! Timestamps are included so you can check out whatever aspect you prefer! No skimping on the sounds here, and we'll actually take the engine up to speed!
    Only issues I've found out of the gate- smoke unit still has the issue with pooling smoke and not pushing until you blow down the stack. Next issue pertains to the trailing truck pickups, the brass pickups are screwed in a little tight, so you will see the wheels dragging once camera is alongside. Otherwise this engine is a tank, and runs awesome! For once I don't want to Loksound swap this, the sound pack is a great improvement out of the box.

    I usually turn the smoke unit off. If you decide to do that on this model, the switch is under the hatch just behind the smokestack. The switch being forward toward the smokebox turns the smoke unit off. Had to contact BLI to figure that one out as the switch isn’t under the cab like it usually would be, and mine didn’t come with an exploded parts diagram.

      Thank you! I had been wondering where the dumb thing was. I had read online about them usually being under the firebox somewhere for other BLI models and couldn't find it. Guess this would be why!

    The new chuff on this engine sounds really good, definitely more convincing than the previous ones, atleast at slower speeds. I hope they use it on all the future Paragon 4 models as most engines up to this point have had the same chuff sound for years now. Whistles are really nice too, that SP 6 chime is probably the best whistle I've heard on a Broadway engine imo. Amazing overview and along with your other overview videos, they're very in-depth and your vids on the Bachmann J3a convinced me to get one myself! Thanks for making these!!

      Thanks for watching! Try to cover all bases with these, without the hassle of having to sift through a review! New chuff set is a big improvement across the board, just wish they had gone with a deeper single chime horn and thrown in a recording of the 90's/00 GS whistle for fun.

    The smoke fan can be adjusted with the assigned cv values. It can be adjusted for “idle” along with regular and heavy chugs. In other words, that will take care of the smoke “pooling” up instead of blowing out. I usually set the idle CV to 30, and the chug CVs at around 100-120. Works just fine. Also need to adjust voltage CV down for the heating element. That takes care of the whole engine getting too hot.

    Very well detailed and handsome model of the Southern Pacific GS4 class locomotive, I really like the streamlined GS class engines that were operated by the SP during the steam era. Another model of the GS4 is now available in ho scale, if I ever decide to purchase one of these GS4 models I want a locomotive painted in the postwar (1950s) black/ silver paint scheme as I personally find that paint scheme unique and attractive on the SP GS class locomotives.

    3:12 I know it's likely a decoder/drivetrain problem, but I like to think that was them incorporating the forces at play when a steam locomotive starts up. I can attest to this, as back in 2022, I rode the Durango & Silverton, and when that train started moving, I felt _every_ stroke of the pistons, but as they picked up speed and the pistons started moving more rhythmically, the jerks stopped and the ride smoothed out, which was so cool! That's just because of how they work _as steam locomotives._ Again, it is likely that it's a decoder and/or drive chassis problem, but still, I can't help but wonder...........

      @SCL3618  Před 4 měsíci

      Falls more under the decoder side, most of my Paragon 3/4 engines do that at speed. ESU swapped equipment has had no issue.

    A model of one of my top 3 favorite locomotives that looks and sounds this good? And the sounds of the 90's whistle, current whistle, SP 6 chime, and air horn being so authentic? Where do I get one of these? 😁 And for that matter, does anyone know where I can get an authentic looking auxiliary tender for 4449? Every one I've found on the Internet to date were clearly based on N&W auxiliary tenders with Daylight paint.

    3:34, did you let broadway limited fix this and what was the end result?

    • @SCL3618
      @SCL3618  Před 4 měsíci

      I haven't sent the engine back, most likely won't unless there's a major failure in the unit. Trucks are easily fixed by slightly pushing the contacts off axle to allow better rolling from less pressure. This didn't affect pickup in testing after.

  • @Jessekin32

    I'm also having issues with my smoke unit. It's been super unreliable, and really embarrassing to use when running at the local club. I have to come up with some bogus excuse.
    I'm going to try ordering some Broadway Limited Smoke fluid, just hoping that they do something different than what I'm currently using. (Mega Steam - Unscented) I have a hard time believing that the smoke unit failing so much made it past Quality Assurance without there being a reason.

      Mine has been running JT's with mixed results..Still pools up and more escapes from smokebox/underframe than anything. Quick blow down the stack fixes things, but it's not been perfect. Fan just isn't kicking enough pressure to clear things out on its own.
