This weeks questions are GREAT!!! Can you fit a TJ gas tank in the back of a JK chassis and yes you can but it does take a lot of work and I don't think it will work in an actual JK. What are my strengths and weaknesses as a mechanic/technician, and I feel that my ability to diagnose a vehicle before fixing it would be my biggest strength. Finally is IFS IRS as strong as solid axles.....and why or why not!!!

Great answer to the strengths and weaknesses question! I've been a tech for 15+ years and there's always more to learn. The guys who say they know it all are the guys you find moving from shop to shop all the time. For the last 3 years I've been with BMW and it has been incredible. Their training is top notch and teaches you proper diagnostic techniques that you can apply anywhere in the field. BMW is also at the leading edge of automotive technology, so there is always new things to learn! Working on such advanced vehicles all day makes working on my 94 ZJ refreshing and simple!

I'm five years into diesel maintenance and I have just now started to get into the more interesting side of things. The place I started had all new buses so I was mostly doing oil changes, tires and brakes mixed in with minor electrical work. I've changed my first Allison transmission this year and some other more complicated jobs. I still feel brand new. I just try to learn from the guys around me and pick up all tips and tricks I can. I worked myself into the slot without any school so I feel like I have to make the most of the experience around me.

the difference between a mechanic and a tech is that a mechanic learned to listen to the vehicle and diagnose and fix the problem as well as why the problem occurred in the first place. a tech, plugs a car in to a computer and replaces the parts they tell them to replace. a tech has a whole series of different skill sets than a mechanic has. I grew up in the same age as you and consider myself a mechanic. I can set points with a match book and actually tune a carb or set the timing on a mechanical fuel injection set-up. I still find myself listening to my vehicles run down the road, how they shift and what they smell like. it's been many years since I was a paid mechanic, but it never leaves you.

Been learning how to weld. I regretted missing my chance earlier in life. Last year I met a HS Autoshop Teacher and he offered to let me use the welder during their Open House. So once a week I go down there and spend 2-4hrs welding. Its gotten to the point where I'm able to help the kids set up the machine and weld. Gonna try learning to use the Plasma cutter soon. Oh and I'm a YJ'er! My first car was my YJ which I still have 30 some years later.

As a previous swing axle VW bus owner, the reduction gear boxes (same as a portal) would cause the rear of the vehicle to lift under power. To the extent that a big HP one will jump off the ground.

There’s no reason you can’t run them as a daily driver. Just keep up the maintenance. Their just like a manual transmission. The hardest part about portals for the street is gearing everything else high enough (low numerically) to run down the freeway at a comfortable engine speed. It gets easier with bigger tires, but still.

One tons are more available and cheaper but I don't think I would need to be that wide and it's only a 4.0 in there for now. Thanks in advance

Question: when unit bearings first came out nobody wanted them and seems like they didn’t last that long. Lately I’ve been seeing you install unit bearings on rigs. Are they getting better or what is the reasoning for this? I have a 2001 ford super duty front axle I want to put dually adapter on. Will unit bearings hold up to this. Truck is just used for on road driving/towing.

I want to build a 1st gen scion xb into a "modern 4 door samurai" I'm thinking 29-33s, kind of whatever works when i get into it, samurai or yota axles, I'd try to just turn the engine the right direction and keep it stock and reliable. I know there would be Floorplan mods and all that but Now to my question, I'm at a loss for a good trans and transfer case option, I'd prefer to skip the samurai stuff just to avoid the divorced case and arguable weaknesses there, I'd like a good trans that would bolt to the stock Toyota 1.5 engine, and preferably something that has doubler options available. Hopefully the question makes sense

seeing as how this is a Q & A session I got a question for ya. Would it be possible to run a set of 14" coils on a 16" coil over shock? the reason I ask is that I am in the process of swapping one-ton axles under my lj and I came across o set of new used coil overs for a good price, I have since put on new coils and it sits a little higher than id like. I currently have 7" of shock shaft showing and i wanted 4"-5" of shaft showing. Yes, I know I'd have to run limit straps to keep the coils from unseating but would it be possible to run those to get my jeep to sit lower without sacrificing the spring preload. Thanks for your time and help.
