People want MORE taxes - so why won't Starmer or Sunak raise them?

  • HOW CAN YOU FIX BRITAIN WITHOUT MONEY?
    The leaders' debate on ITV threw up the thorny issue of tax, as Rishi Sunak said households would pay £2k more under Labour lots of times and Keir Starmer waited until the next day to accuse of him of misleading the country.
    Both of the main parties seem terrified of saying they will raise taxes, even though Labour have spent the last 14 years complaining about underinvestment in public services.
    How dos the tax/spend see-saw get balanced? We asked people relaxing in Soho Square, central London, and one or two had an idea of who might have the money to help fix the country.
    So, tell us in the comments: would you be willing to pay more tax?

    Higher taxes?!!! You’ve got to be out of your mind!!! There are plenty of places around the world that pay SIGNIFICANTLY less tax and enjoy are far superior standard of life. It’s not how high the tax rate is, it’s how they manage their finances.

      Yes the people pay less tax and the higher earners pay more. It's not rocket science. Giving rich tax cuts and breaks is not working. While I don't think people on lower incomes should pay more tax I think for some people though it would be pocket change to them. They wouldn't even notice it because they have so much wealth it wouldn't make a dent.

      The more you earn, the higher the tax band. Someone on £25,000 will pay 20% on £12,430 - (the amount earned over the £12,570 tax allowance). Someone on £100,000 will pay 20% up to £37,700, then 40% on £37,701 - £100,000. Plus higher NI contributions.

      £25,000 earner - £3,478.60
      £100,000 earner - £31,439.00
      For 4x the annual income, they're paying 9x tax.

      @forshor1998 Před 20 dny

      Just sayin, that's actually really low historically. It used to be the top tax bracket used to be around 90% when standards of living were super high.
      Also, the top INCOME tax bracket being 45% does not mean an actual 50% of your income is taken, that's not how tax brackets work. Unless you're literally making millions every year it's not even close.

    • @Paul-bs5wl
      @Paul-bs5wl Před 20 dny

      @@forshor1998 Absolutely not. Income tax rates were ratcheted up to 30% (which was an all-time high at the time) during WW1. They were set at variable levels less than 30% for the preceeding 120 years (before that, there was no income tax). Then around WW2 they were skyrocketed to upwards of 99% then it was slowly stepped down by the 70s to 83%, then Thatcher reduced it to 60%. You may note that the UK economy was a disaster between 1945 and the 1970s and Thatcher's (relatively) low taxation policies were a big part of why it was able to perform alright in the 80s. If you want to count "hisorically" as "post-WW2" as if that's valid, then sure, I guess 45% is pretty low by the insane standards of post-war Britain.
      Also yes it is 45% of your income. You have no personal allowance if your income exceeds £125,000. That is not "millions every year"

    • @forshor1998
      @forshor1998 Před 19 dny

      @@Paul-bs5wl someone still mis-understands tax law lol. Personal allowance doesn't change how tax brackets work.
      Also, by your own admission, 45% is still super low. Fucking Thatcher, the queen of slashing taxes (which she sokd off a fuckload of our public assets to do) was still taxing us at 60% on the top income bracket. The fact we still expect the NHS and other public services to operate at a much lower amount is kinda nuts.
      To be clear, personally I want most people to be paying less in tax, cost of living increases mean the poorest need more money to live. I'd like to see more taxes on the uber-wealthy but they don't get their income as "income", there's a few ways they do it but for the most part they take out loans against thier assests which they never plan to pay off, but that doesn't make a 45% top tax bracket a high rate historically cause it just isn't.

How does Rishi Sunak and his wife only pay a few hundred thousand this year on total earnings at least in the high tens (probably hundreds) of millions? This argument the rich make about "in real terms we pay more than you do" is a phallacy - tax stings everyone BUT the rich.
