  • A short film of Harriet Quimby's demise in 1912, and a good illustration of why you should always wear a seat belt.

Very tasteless!!! For being a pilot for only 11 months, Miss Quimby achieved a lot. She was the first woman to fly across the English Channel, from Dover to Calais, France. However she did it on the very same night the Titanic struck an ice berg and sunk. The coverage of her accomplishment in the New York Times was way back on page 27 (if I remember correctly) after all the Titanic news. She was also the first woman to fly over Mexico City. So, please show some respect.

I honestly don't get the point of this post. I can realize the rudeness of the times back then when women weren't supposed to be doing things men were supposed to be doing, but guys still being smartassed rude displaying personal insults like this today in the year 2010? I don't get the point. Not sure if this is even historically accurate.

@@musicgroovin It's not. I've read, her plane pitched forward several times, probably due to air turbulence and her and her passenger fell to the ground. The plane glided safely to the ground. Sorry it took me 14 years to respond

She didnt kill any one it was an accident he stood up and they both died ....But she was a trend setter and the first female to accomplish that SO have alittle respect :-(

Exactly, first woman to fly the English Channel. First licensed female pilot in the USA. And she could fly a Bleriot!

You make light of a very accomplished pilot and a horrific pair of deaths. Her plane did land itself, but in the water nearby. Had you shown more respect, particularly the double-entendre, I might have offered a thumbs up.

The thinking is that Willard moved forward, maybe to say something, the COG shifted, leading to the series of events.
You are right and this 'animation' is incorrect, they were not ejected together in some kind of sky-ballet.
She achieved a lot in such a short time, an amazing human, IMO.These were the early days and no one really knew what they were doing, a few years previous countries were banning cars from going over 10 MPH because they thought the drivers wouldn't be able to breath!!

No one knows for sure she wasn't belted, she did complain about sliding and being thrown about, and there is some evidence she had a belt or rope to hold her more securely. That said, at the time these things weren't doing acrobatics and horse and carts and cars didn't have any restraint either...so blaming them for not belting up is a bit pathetic.

There weren't seatbelts in practically anything at that time.

Really a very poor attempt, by DPSflight, to capitalize on an unfortunate event.

      What happened??

Very few people these days would know anything about Harriet Quimby. However, the Bleriot she was piloting did not have seat belts. Her passenger, a William Willard, is suspected of moving around while they were flying, upsetting the planes delicate center of gravity. He was ejected first, followed by Quimby. They were flying over the Chesapeake bay near the shoreline (around Baltimore I believe). Quimby fell in shallow, marshy water. The plane continued on pilotless, crash landing lightly.

There were no seat belts in 1912.

I was wrong about Baltimore. The accident took place at the 3rd annual Boston Aviation Meet in Quincy, Mass. Her Bleriot was a brand new two seater.

This was in the 1910's. Nobody had seatbelts in anything and flying was in its infancy.
