Alexander tries to test the diogenese by granting him anything. Rather than refusing Alexander and being ungrateful for his generosity, Diogenes asked for a simple request, which can be simply granted by anyone . Then, he tries to intimidate him . Cunningly diogenes made him think about his reputation as a good man if he killed or arrested diogense . That made alexander respect diogense .
Too bad about socrates though.

Alexander knew exactly who he was talking to and about what. Many do not remember this, but Alexander was a student of Aristotle and knew philosophy well.

So Diogenes defeated Alexander, not with might but with wisdom and humbleness....
I dont think diogenes has a bit of humbleness in him.
it's called humility.
It's an important bit of context that Alexander's boyhood personal tutor was Aristotle, hired by Alexander's father, Philip, the king of Macedon. Alexander knew some philosophy.
-- Aristotle was taught by Plato, at the Academy, and Plato had been a young follower of Socrates at the time of Socrates' death.
-- Aristotle invented/discovered logic, wrote about physics, metaphysics, drama, ethics, and more.

Hail to the truth teller and to those who recognize them, for they are both few.
Theres a great lesson to learn from these two . Alexander died regreting wasting his life chasing wealth , power and fame , and he didnt spent it on what was important. Diogenes was free and had no care ,took a dump in public , masrurbated in public , he is the embodiment of Not giving a F. The thing is , it is shameful to carry oneself like that , he was free but he had no one , he lived like a wild dog and no one wanted to be associated with him too much . The lesson is , live a balanced life , somewhere in between how these two lived . You have some power, money and you dont really care for what most people think , you work hard 4 or 5 days of the week and you spent the rest with your family and loved ones . You carry your self with decency, and are considerate of others , no one wants yo see you take a dump or masturbate in public .
Balance
Balance is a definition of Normal common person if you want to lead a life of balance you will probably not be seen in the books and shorts like this but hey i never said everyone needs to be famous extraordinary people can be found living as a simple life too there is no problem in that if that's what that person wants
@@LuciferCode0Good comment very true
@LuciferCode0 Love is what's important, it's all we ever had , those who spent their whole lives chasing success ultimately regret not spending enough time with loved ones.
A normal life is depressing and boring. Diogenes had no one, doesn't mean he is lonely. Its better to have no one than having someone and make u feel miserable and give u full of troubles. Diogenes represent STOICISM, its about being undefeated, observation, doing things than benefits urself, not living in peoples or societies expectation, its just living the way u want to live, example living in the mountains alone with your hounds. He is not representing masturbating in public, dont judge by his actions, judge his philosophy. Stoicism can be applied to any environment, if u are smart enough to use it.
You won't believe how much respect a stoic life will garner you. People change the way they talk to you.

Because Diogenes was content and Alexander the great wanted more. So which is under the greater pressures.
You got the point, they are opposites, but they learn from each other. Alexander learn stoicism, while Diogenes know that its better to live in a paddle than living with a golden table with full of troubles.
But wasn't Diogenes a Nhilist? I understand greed and money must be controlled, but the way Diogenes lived was terrible and the Stoics and philosophers preached against Nhilism and spoke towards building yourself and character

To completely understand you'll have to read and understand ancient Greek text
"A cynical philosopher"?!?
Diogenes *INVENTED* Cynicism.
Cynicism comes from a corruption of the Greek word for "Dog". Dog is "κύων" (Kyon) in Greek. He was known as "Διογένης ὁ Κυνικός" (Diogenes ho Kynikos -- or Diogenese the Dawg-like)...
"Κυνι" (Kyni) is a corruption of "κύων" (Kyon), the same way "Dawg" is, for "Dog"...
To be Cynical, means to be Doglike.
And being an expert in cynicism, and with basic understanding of Greek, to call Diogenes "A cynical philosipher", is like saying that "George Washington was just a rebel", *_instead of saying,_* "George Washington was the Military Leader of the American Revolution.".
