Woman Leads Police on Wild Chase Through Residential Area

- On March 14, 2024, at approximately 1603 hours, I, Deputy A. Brady attempted a traffic stop in the area of the 4800 block of 41st Street westbound on a silver Mercedes-Benz SUV bearing FL tag LEAD90. (Note: LEAD9Q0 shows an active registration for a green Nissan). The Mercedes-Benz VIN is: 4JGAB75E05A530493.
Prior to the traffic stop, my patrol vehicle's license plate reader alerted me to FL tag LEAD90, which had a registered owner with a suspended driver's license. As I reviewed the license plate reader alert, I noticed that the registered vehicle for LEAD90 was a green Nissan. However, the vehicle I was attempting to stop was an older model, silver Mercedes-Benz SUV. I then conducted a DAVID search of license plate LEAD90, which again showed it being registered to a green Nissan. The Indian River County Public Safety Dispatch also conducted an FCIC/NCIC check of FL tag LEAD90 and confirmed it was registered to a green Nissan.
I activated my emergency lights and sirens at approximately the 4800 block of 41st Street. I was driving my agency-issued, marked patrol vehicle with Sheriff insignia. The defendant and sole occupant of the vehicle, later identified as Nafertiti T. Dutes, immediately turned north on 49th Avenue and began to accelerate away from me. The defendant then turned east on 42nd Street, running the stop sign at 42nd Street and 48th Avenue. Subsequently, the defendant ran the stop sign at 42nd Street and 47th Avenue and again at 47th Avenue and 41st Street. These intersections are in a residential neighborhood. The defendant turned east on 41st Street, again accelerating away from my patrol vehicle with my emergency lights and sirens still activated. At the intersection of 41st Street and 43rd Avenue, the defendant then turned south on 43rd Avenue, nearly colliding with other vehicles. The defendant continued to drive south in the northbound lanes of 43rd Avenue, still accelerating away from me. At this point, for the safety of the public and oncoming traffic, I attempted a PIT maneuver on the defendant’s vehicle. The defendant drove to the west side of 43rd Avenue and then back across all lanes to the east side of 43rd Avenue. Still traveling southbound, the defendant drove through several business yards and ditches before ultimately becoming stuck in a ditch at the 4000 block of 43rd Avenue, where she was taken into custody.
The Indian River County Public Safety Dispatch confirmed that the defendant's license was not valid and had multiple active suspensions. I conducted a DAVID search of the defendant's driving history, which provided numerous driving while license suspended guilty convictions, totaling 14 DWLS. I stopped counting at nine guilty convictions and two habitual traffic offender designations. Correction Deputy K. Grandy printed the defendant’s NCIC criminal history for me. The defendant’s most recent habitual traffic offender designation was when she was placed on probation on 11/15/2023. Her probation ends on 11/14/2028. The three most recent DWLS with knowledge guilty convictions for the defendant are as follows: 9/19/2021 citation # ADIOJ8E, 4/6/2021 citation # AEJU76E, and 11/2/2020 citation # ADJ15GE. On the passenger side seat of the SUV was the defendant's FL issued ID card. The defendant did not have a FL driver's license on her or in the vehicle. The DAVID driver's history search shows the defendant's driver’s license being revoked for five years, once on 6/16/2021, and again on 12/7/2023.
With the facts listed above and the evidence, there is probable cause to charge Nafertiti T. Dutes with violations of F.S.S. 316.1935(3)(A) Fleeing/Eluding Officer in a Marked Patrol Vehicle with Lights & Siren Active with disregard for persons or property and F.S.S. 322.34(5) Knowingly Driving While License Suspended or Revoked (Habitual Traffic Offender)."

Nefertiti will NOT be denied, driving and I imagine she is h*ll at the buffet line. She is an exercise in physics. That car was at its equilibrium state when up on 2 wheels like that. Center of gravity was right where it needed to be. She could have easily driven for miles like that...might not be uncommon for her to regularly drive in that config based on the mass involved.

A lot of our smaller and medium sized cities have no city police department, they contract with the Sheriffs department to carry out those duties. Town in vid had rock streets, likely no city police department.
FHP works within towns too, but normally on state/fed roads, or streets that are also actually a state road before the city enveloped them and they became city streets too. I live on one such state road. Two lane, 35mph, plenty of stop/4-way stops, street no different than the side streets that cross it. Signage for the state road city street name. FHP patrols it, sits at the 4-ways during high traffic times-plainly visible. State hiway dept maintains the road.

She's actually not a bad driver. I've seen a lot worse. She avoided other cars and even mailboxes. She managed to maintain control after going up on two wheels Not bad. Still an idiot for running but pretty entertaining chase. Glad no one was hurt. I'm impressed by the car, too. Lesser cars couldn't handle that.
That Mercedes Benz ML 320 is built like a truck cause it is a truck. In fact I was surprised to see the right front wheel collapse into the wheelwell, until I watched that last nasty bump again. Damn. She put that thing through hell. I wonder how the Explorer fared? I’m sure it’s not driveable at the moment. He just followed her right off the proverbial cliff.

The Hemi and the LS sound like American horsepower. That EcoBoost may have great numbers on paper, but you can keep it. They do look the part though. Ford really got the newest Mustang and the Explorer looking very, very sexy. Quite honestly, more so than even the sharpest European counterparts. I’ve also got an. ML320, and the AWD system is no joke. I’ve actually had to use it to pull the Burban out of some greasy mud. Down here in Charleston, it’s a particularly sticky yet slippery kind of mud, and it seems to snag the best of em in the most ridiculous ways. So slippery in fact that I once pulled the edge of the shoulder on the highway to help a perish who misjudged the turnaround zone, and rolled a front wheel into he mud. Cars were passing my passenger side mirror (the Burban, and I was towing a 6/12 enclosed trailer) too close for comfort, so I edged over just 1 foot more, which put my drivers side tires off the shoulder, barely. I tried to put my front left tire back up on asphalt, and dammit, it felt like King Kong was pushing me directly from the passenger side off the shoulders down the slight grade into the newly graded median, with only grass seed showing. Now I had about 8,000 pounds of steel a few feet off the shoulder, and sliding downhill, trailer following suit, and trying to lower out did no good. That sucked. I had to unhitch, use a very expansive speaker as a tongue “float”, as the tongue jack would just sink in the mud, dug out the holes my wheels were in, by HAND, and eventually got the beast out of the hole, sideways at WOT, four wheels spinning at like 50mph with the truck going about 10mph, pointed partially uphill, but making only the slightest progress upwards. I was about to take out a sign post, sideways, but my Z71 rocker bars were going to have to take the hit, cases I was t letting off till I was clear. Miraculously, the tires grabbed some solid ground and LAUNCHED me back onto the pavement, and thank god traffic was very light, or I would have gotten t-boned. It took me HOURS to rinse the mud from my truck and trailer. Never again. I bought an electric winch that week. What I would have hooked it too in that scenario, I know not, maybe the trailer, but dammit, never again. That sucked.
