Love this show, I am glad I found it. I miss sewing, I am in my 50's now and I wish I would have went to dress making school right out of High school. Did some sewing back in grade 7 and 8 and I loved it. I am sorry that I never kept it up. Found a place in my area that offers sewing lessons that I am going to look into. Would love to get back to work, and do something for a living. I went to work right out of High School and forgot all about sewing, until I saw this show. I've wasted so much of my time. Thank Gentleman Jim and Victoria. P.S. I plan on watching all the show. So I have a bit to catch up on.

OM Goodness. I've enjoyed this immensely. So many excellent reminders. Three major things I am carrying away from this episode is #1 installing zippers and pockets and sewing a straight line; #2 continue to sew, no matter what; #3 sew from the heart not the head. My skills need improvement and I've put my sewing on the back burner out of frustration. Gentleman Jim's statement "I just wanted to make clothes" hit me hard--because that's how I feel.

That's beautiful. When he says about how to sew a garment and he says to "guide it" not steer it. It reminds me of myself when I learned, haha, that my Higher Self actually makes the best garments when I allow it. If you try to control everything, you just get stressed out. But when you get in sync, in touch, in tune with your Higher Self, you just glide along, and what's more, you find really awesome new ways of doing things that you never would have thought about before. It's in the surrendering to the inner self's all knowing ways, that you get the most out of it. You're not just an ego, you're also a Higher, and a Lower Self, meaning, the Spirit and the Mother Earth Instinct Self. And they both have a lot more experience behind them than us as the Middle Self ego does, hahaha! Love these teaching videos. Thank you. Very helpful.

I would like to add a little more to that definition of dressmaking and tailoring. The tailor works with more structured garments and therefore does more pattern drafting because everything has to line up in a way that is almost geometric. The dressmaker does flat pattern making, too, but he or she is more likely to start the patterning process by draping because flowing garments are often more curved and need to be seen in 3d first to get the right amount of drape or gathering . It is also easier to fit a woman's garment on a dress form or a real body because of the curves of a woman's body.
There is also a historical difference.Tailors historically belonged to guilds. I'm sure Jim will talk about that. They still have designated levels. For example, a master tailor is someone who understands all aspects of tailoring. I usually takes years to reach that level. Dressmakers don't have guilds and the word covers all levels from home sewers to dressmakers who focus on high end garments.

I do alterations for others as well as myself, the tips that I picked up from your videos have joined forces with what I already knew and it has brought smiles to their faces as well as $$ to my pocket, for that I thank you and your assistance so much. Now I have a project on a man's suit jacket, I need to decrease the size by 1/1/2 inch on each side. I'm working with the two seams in the back near the arms, what I want to know is how do I shorten the sleeve, from the top or no?
