Interesting that this movie came out 11 years ago, and only recently people have been exploring the “what could have been” rabbit hole. A few months ago for you, and the last few days for me.

A line that got me in the original "Thneedville" song is this one: "please don't mention greed-ville" and it is one of the best lines cause it really showed the nature of these people in 1 line (and the fact that it is in the very end of the song that talks about wanting more is more impactful that I thought it would be)
I first went down The Lorax rabbit-hole a few months ago when Schaffrillas made an Ilumination's movies ranking. In that video he mentioned Biggering, and how it was a phenomenal song that was absolutely worth listening to. I was intrigued, so I gave it a shot; it immediately became my favourite villain song, or even one of my favourite songs period. Ever since then I have watched video essay after video assay about The Lorax, and now I'm completely obsessed with the film and what it could have been. This has to be one of the best analysis's of the film I have seen yet; the quality is actually unfathomably good. Thank you for making this masterpiece of a video
Thank you so much! The song surprised me by how good it is and I listen to it all the time. Just the fact that Biggering exists intrigued me so much and I had to look more into it. And I came to find something special buried in what we got. It's interesting not only in a adaptation level, but in an artistic and filmmaking level too. How something can get so close but (by various means) miss the mark.
I have been obsessing over what the Lorax could have been for some months now and honestly, I have a huge problem with the character Ted. In the final cut he seemingly only wants to save the trees for Audrey, not for the environment. Despite the fact that this whole "How do I get a tree" part was wayyyy longer than the actual destruction, it added to the disparagement of the environmental tragedy that unfolded and making the audience ask themselves "How bad can the Once-ler be?", since it's "only" the trees and noone actually cares about those (not even Audrey who wants to have a tree because they look cute, not because they are important for a healthy environment). Besides that, I think your video perfectly captured what happened and what could have happend. And after various video essays hating on the movie it was nice finding someone that actually quite enjoys the final cut (like me): It was, in fact, fine. Edit: Also, BIGGERING YES I listen to it so much. One of my fav songs now!
in fact there is an opening song from theendville where ted was a greedy and spoiled kid who just wanted a tree to show off to others since he was selfish and that was in the original script

the more I think about it the more insane I go thinking how much better the film could have been. Biggering implied many things which could've been so good. TOO BAD ILLUMINATIONS DOESNT CARE
I think the lorax had so much missed potential. I think it would have made a lot more sense if the onceler was corrupted by power, becoming shadier as things go on to show on corporations can have humble honest beginnings but be corrupted by money and fame. I think it could be a lot more heartbreaking where he realizes what he did at the very end when there was no turning back
im digging into cut content of the lorax just now, im frustrated because its just remembered as a meme but it could've been so much more, i would've loved to see the biggering draft...
It seems that the original draft was going to be darker and more serious, with darker music and Pink Floyd type criticism, Now I want to see a lorax opera rock we could have had it but it couldn't be done, a shame
Lorax was used to advertise a car, which is terrible in itself and against the Lorax messaging since automobiles destroy the natural environment when used en masse as the industry encourages.
It's a shame we lost some great songs and a much less subtle/more realistic film. But it got me thinking, the onceler in this film's early version fits amazingly well for a musical that follows him and his deep spiral into greed and pride getting trapped in the idea of "becoming a bigger corporation" (becoming less human as the story of the lorax goes on, eventually never realizing the scope of his destruction until the last tree is cut down). It really is a story that should be explored again with the proper respect for the main message of the film, I think it would go over much better than the illumination film.
Yeah, i hope so, too. We just need a studio that ACTUALLY respects Dr. Seuss's work and the message. But until then, at least we still have the book. And the hand drawn animated TV special.
This story deserves another adaption in either on stage musical form or another movie in like,20 years from now. I personally think musical would be the best option. The music from both films is amazing, and I would love if they could combine some songs from both and maybe add in some new ones(they don’t really need any but it would be nice). Like unpopular opinion but love that thneedville is the establishing song, they could just add an I want part for ted tbh and make the song more obviously dystopian. And the little short jingles from the 70s version when they were in the land of the trees could be snuck in there maybe with an instrumental version of it or just the full version. And they have the opportunity to basically fix every character from the 2012 version, specifically Ted. Like I understand wanting to make ted important since in the og hes barely a character but I want his motivations for going to the onceler to not be shallow?! We don’t know why he’s there in the og, and in the 2012 one he’s there cuz he wants to impress a girl. They could’ve easily fixed it by keeping that detail in but as he keeps on learning about the story from the onceler he does it for the good of the environment/people instead of wanting to impress a girl. But that’s all I’m gonna say cuz the more I think abt the 2012 one sending questionable messages to its audience the more my head hurts 💀

It was removed because it would have scared children? Are children never supposed to feel fear like this seems like an appropriate time to make children afraid.
I don't think the Once-ler represents corporations. He is an individual who is swept up in a system that rewards greed. He makes all the wrong decisions, but he represents the power of an individual to do incredible bad or good
Ok now I REALLY want there to be a Broadway version of the Lorax. Hear me out: the storytelling style would be similar to Brightstar. Back and forth between current interactions of the Onceler and today's youth and the Onceler's backstory. The story and musical direction would follow that of the cut concepts and songs. The Onceler would be fully aware of what he did and have had a deeper relationship with the Lorax as he finally starts to redeem himself with the youth as he clearly regrets his past. Everyone works together to start repairing the damage he did. Ideally, the guy who played beetlejuice would be the Lorax bc scraggly vocals for the rock chant in biggering. That, or the musical would be a similar format to Wicked. Maybe: "Biggering" or "ONCE". Thankyou for coming to my ted talk.
I honestly love onceler his design, personality and all but i don't think he suits the onceler role i love him tho but the movie also doesnt make much sense like what do people in thneedville eat and drink? And i think they should've made the part where onceler becomes a huge business man longer and explain it more than just a 3 minute song. And i would love the deleted scenes especially the one with o hare telling ted not to visit onceler being in the movie.
always love to discover more people learning about the art we lost due to illumination being an awful company that hates creativity and silences it's creatives visions
This is excellent! Been looking at so much Lorax movie related stuff and thinking so much about what they couldve done differently. I really enjoyed this video! Really good
So, i think making onceler more relatable couldve worked, but maybe combine a version of the 2012 onceler with 1972. Show him be relatable, and heck have some moments where he doubts himself (like in the og) but have his decision be 100 percent his own. Theres no need to have a horror, manipulative family whom controls him. He should NOT be a victim. And, have him KNOW what hes doing, and know sense of plausible deniability. If you notice in the og, the lorax actually explains to him why his actions are harmful and in this version he never truly does. Yea, he says theyre bad, but he never truly explains why they're bad. It seems like they added that to make him more naive. But he shouldn't be. Corporations irl KNOW damn well the harm they cause. They just DONT CARE. I think hbcib and biggering coulda both worked. Maybe start with him DECIDING (yes, him making the decision himself, no mean mom making him do it. It HAS to be his choice) to start chopping down trees for profit. Then lorax says "stop it, this is bad" then we get "who cares if a few trees are dying?" Then after that, have him send some animals away and him tell the onceler how much hes hurting them. And then maybe get a scene like the og book "bad, bad, bad! Thats all you say is bad! I have my rights, i intend to keep on biggering!" THEN thats when we transition to biggering, and "who cares if some things are dying?" Also, like how you said in "this is the place (the tricky version)" it seems like all the decisions are his own and not his moms, well, i believe the same for "biggering" so having this is the place tricky version in the version of beginnering would foreshadow it greatly. I saw your biggering animation, and its AMAZING!
Did I just hallucinate? I just saw it as: The Once-ler (1949) could've been great, Now I see it again. It's now: The Once-ler (2012) Could've been Great, what's happenin to my brain rn-
My grandpa didnt want me to watch this movie as a kid bc he was worried i would become a liberal. He wasnt wrong but this movie definitely wasnt why(if we’re chalking it up to any movie, its Robots)
In high school I had an environmental systems (science class) the last day of class since we didn’t have anything to do I suggested we watch the original short film Lorax it sums everything up we learned in class he actually decided to play it on the last day of class for now on.
My biggest issue with the movie is that, even as a kid, i always felt so sorry for The Oncler. I felt so sorry for the literal embodiemnet of greed and corpeeation. That shouldnt have happened. I should feel empathetic to what he looses, aswell as seeing him loose himself, but not think hes a victum. In the book the oncler puts his hands willingly on a hot pan and actively chooses to burn himself for the food (wealth). In the movie however, the oncler is forced the pan, essentially having it thrown into his hands. Biggering was the perfect song for greed. While How bad is nothing other than a product itself. (Also, i agree that having the oncler a human does show that hes not a monster, but a human….but..O’Hare is literally just a cartoony selfish villian, which i really really hate! Ohare has no character other than to be a brighter background behind Oncler so that he looks less evil in comparison. ).
Exactly. I was in the same boat as you, as a kid I felt bad for the onceler. They made him way to sympathetic in this movie. In fact, I feel like that's the reason they had the lorax come back at the end. Cuz they mightve figured kids would feel bad for the onceler since he was pressured into shit, so they wanted him to have a happy ending. So that begs the question...why even write all that in the first place? Yea, making him more relatable or heck, likable, isn't the worst idea cuz it shows kids that even people with good intentions could be corrupted. And heck, even tho I LOVE biggering, I don't even hate that it was replaced. Cuz ykw? If you wanted to make him relatable, then yea. I don't think most kids could could imagine themselves not caring if some things die but could definitely imagine them not caring if a few trees die. So yea, it's a lot easier to put yourself in his shoes when he says that. Cuz kids would be like "I'm nice, I could never imagine myself not caring about the deaths of animals or people" whilst you could be like "hmm, I also have never seen the big deal with a few trees dying myself, so this could actually be me if I don't start caring more" however, MY problem with the onceler is how they make him seem like a victim. He was js manipulated by his selfish family. He js wanted his uncaring family to be proud. When, NO. Companies should NOT be painted in a light that makes you feel sorry for them. It should've been his OWN DANM CHOICE
@@maddiemorales1419 Exactly! I feel so bad for the origional creators of biggering and preconsepts cause its clear they HAD an idea in mind! they wanted to write a dramatic story with humanity in the center of the greeed, untill the company they worked for Illumination said “uh uh uh, we are a company so, maaaayyybbbbe give the oncler an evil family and make his villian song a pop one that could be played for fun! we wouldnt want kids to fear him do we!? Goodness no! We want kids to watch the movie and buy a lorax pancake at ihops!”
Oh, and another point is that as a kid when the last tree fell in the 2012 version i actually felt so sad for the onceler when in reality I should've felt bad for the animals loosing their homes. Come on, you can't tell me they didn't know what they were doing when that's what a CHILD is thinking...at least it did teach me to be more careful or I could destroy everything...which is something good to come out of it...but still SM to criticize. People complain about others not taking the message seriously, but it's so obvious ILLUMINATION didn't take it seriously. I mean, the writers clearly did, but I feel bad for them due to having the greediest film studio breathing down their necks! Illumination cares about MONEY!! Ironic, isn't it? and what the vid said was right, he doesn't even seem that greedy or ruthless in the 2012 movie. As a kid I ligit thought he js made an honest mistake, like, in the end where he sees what he's done, he looks so devastated. Like, he ligit looks like he didn't know how bad it could actually be. He ligit seems to think the only thing he's done was chop down a few trees, UwU. So...SOOO many problems with the movie...do you think his reaction to the last tree getting chopped down would've been different if they added biggering? Also, I've written a script that actually victimizes him much less myself
@@maddiemorales1419 Ikr!! Kinda disgusts me. (also, i no joke legit forgot about Dani Devtos character The Lorax…u know…the character the book and movies named after!!)

What would of been amazing is if they had both how bad could it be and biggering. How bad could I be when he is deciding to chop down the trees and then does it, then after they could have the cut seen about him calling body guards to arrest the Lorax then goes into biggering and you can see the Lorax trying to avoid the body guard while trying to convince the Oncler. This would have made the oncler a Villain and kept both songs. Then the Lorax escapes the body guard then has the tree sene when the last tree falls. The Oncler realizes if he would just have planted more trees or not cut them down his whole company would have stayed in business. Just an idea and it would change the whole course of the movie but the Onceler would actually be a villain not a goof ball that messed up big time. You could also have a sene where when he’s traveling explaining why he wants to start a company to make his family proud. But when he starts getting money that motive changes to making more and more and more, blinded by his stupidity of taking the trees but not planting more, and he finally realizes that he lost his friends.
The Onceler is too.. how do I say it… cute to be a villain. Sure, my main antagonist for a story is supposed to be portrayed as a sexy man but that’s… different. He’s not a cute, patooty man that looks like a huggable bear. I’m attempting to make him (despite with my un-evolved art style..) yes, he is traumatized. Yes, he is sad. Yes, he was “convinced” by a parental figure to do bad things. But he feels no mercy in the end, and I don’t think I failed to make him as dark as needed. The only reason why he was needed to be traumatized was so I could make a betrayal moment to the main protagonist, I wish they made the Onceler more like an evil character, rather than a pityful, adorable bean. My opinion is that they failed to make him look that bad. I’m a CountryHumans writer by the way, and I even managed to make a capitalist character that is A PROTAGONIST seen more harsh and stubborn than the Onceler has ever been despite the arguments, and the protagonist to be more of an egotistical character used for a comedic effect, even
He wasn’t convinced by a parental figure to do bad things, there are plenty of elements that proves the contrary. Please stop believing every misconception you see on TikTok or CZcams. The Once-ler is a villain, not broken, not evil, but greedy. That’s the reason he was created.
Yea, you definitely have a point. There's ofc sexy villains, but like, onceler js...looks too nice...and cute...like a teddy bear. He's not "bad boy" attractive...more like "boy next door" attractive...
@@maddiemorales1419 I get the "the villain looks good" trope, it even works in real life. For example Josef Mengele, very bad man, but charming in his appearance. But he's not teddy bear style, he looks kind of like he's on his last braincell considering what his eyes look like but ignoring that relatively attractive male.
@@miskahn yea, that's where I was getting at. Plus, not js that, but 2012 onceler is js too...sweet...ig...I mean, maybe they did that to show how money and fame could change a nice person? It js becomes a point that when he does become mean, it js feel out of character. Especially if he was only pressured by his mom in the first place
Here’s my retight Tim and his friends want to see a tree but they have no reason to but then the air filter’s in their city that makes clean air is soon to stop working and so time goes to find the onceler to find a tree and save his city
I watched this as a kid anc tbh? The eco-friendly message was pretty clear to me, as was the greed. I think O'Hare falls mych more in line of being the representative of capitalist greed. He doesnt want peopoe to know about trees and actively tries to stop anyone from planting more trees. And its at the point where everyone has zero oxygen and need to buy it from him. My guess is they decided to switch the characters. Given how The Onceler in the book gives the boy the seed and asks for him to plant it after explaining why the trees died and what hes done i guess i cah see the interpretation of that being because he got in way over his head and got greedier overtime? Idk
As a Onceler simp I hate this movie but I actually love it at the same time man I hate-love this movie it had so many potential to be amazing but all we got was trashy shit-show but well this movie was made by Illumination I had to make an Iceberg why this movie is so goddamn awful but so ironically enjoyable at the same time 😞
Can I consider you a furry? Eh, as much as I don’t like furries, if you agree that biggering should’ve been added, then I’m going to ignore my opinion on furries and agree.
There is nothing wrong with capitalism, but there are many things wrong with greed. Communism and any other form of totalitarianism are often pushed by politicians because of their lust for power. Greed lies in every political system. Capitalism makes it harder for there to be one entity that has complete control because they have to work for it and beat out the competition.
The loss of biggering is truly a tragedy, and the lorax is honestly a lost masterpiece. It could of been so, so good.

And after various video essays hating on the movie it was nice finding someone that actually quite enjoys the final cut (like me): It was, in fact, fine.
Edit: Also, BIGGERING YES I listen to it so much. One of my fav songs now!

I think Audrey was so interested in the trees,
1: obvious she saw them from her parents or in history class? and were beautiful to her
2: she knows and doesn’t want everyone to forget them, (cause it seems everyone does)
3: she has hope there’s a sapling out there, (after all she was so happy when she saw the sapling)
They need to make a lorax 2 just focusing on the oncelers story
the more I think about it the more insane I go thinking how much better the film could have been.
The original draft appears to have been a darker Rock Opera themed musical ala Pink Floyd
It seems that the original draft was going to be darker and more serious, with darker music and Pink Floyd type criticism,
Now I want to see a lorax opera rock we could have had it but it couldn't be done, a shame
Lorax was used to advertise a car, which is terrible in itself and against the Lorax messaging since automobiles destroy the natural environment when used en masse as the industry encourages.

I really hope one day we get a remake of the movie, it had so much potential
I love the Lorax movie, its that type of movie were "its good because its bad", but it could be SO MUCH better
I can relate with this video...for some reason i obsessed with the lorax in 2020.. mostly because off biggering

It was removed because it would have scared children? Are children never supposed to feel fear like this seems like an appropriate time to make children afraid.
Right? Pollution isn't supposed to be sugar-coated, pollution is fucking scary.
It’s because Illumination thought that Biggering sounds too much like them and they didn’t want kids to go anti-corporate.
Children need to learn how to cope with the emotion of fear and movies are a good way to let them practice those copeing skills in a safe environment
Where can i find that scene?

To convice me, you'd need 13 more cents, a nail, and the shell of a great great grandfather snail.

@@harmonylynx252 exactly!

Hello
Idk
