Major upheavals have left Ellenor (Camryn Manheim), Eugene (Steve Harris) and Jimmy (Michael Badalucco) in charge of the firm. In an attempt to rebuild their ranks, Ellenor hires an old friend: the enigmatic and ethically-challenged Alan Shore (James Spader). Shore's brilliant-yet-highly-unorthodox methods succeed in winning big cases - but will they also threaten the future of the firm?

James Spader deserved every Emmy. I rarely watched The Practice but when I heard Spader was joining, I immediately started watching. Fantastic. Sharon Stone was also brilliant in her guest starring role.

I agree. I started watching The Practice in the 6th or 7th Season with my then wife. I thought it was good but when Shore joined it was unmissable. I was so shattered when it was cancelled but as we often get things delayed where I live (or used to), as soon as my disappointment had turned to despair, an ad popped up on the same network that aired it in my country saying something like "Love Alan Shore from The Practice? Then tune in next Friday for the new series Boston Legal, following Alan's exploits at his new law firm".
      ******** Spoiler Alert ********
I treasured every episode of Boston Legal, for it's humour, it's exceptional writing, the comedic antics and even it's quirky habit of regularly 'breaking the fourth wall' - e.g. Denny telling Alan not to pursue a female on the show because "She's only a guest star" or walking out for the end of episode balcony scene and Alan saying to Denny "Where have you been Denny, I haven't seen you all episode?" I think on one occasion followed up by Denny as the credits were about to roll saying to Alan "Hey, don't forget we're on on Thursday night next week instead of Friday" (or words to that effect). Another gem was Denny's impending marriage where his fiancé wanted to live in Hawaii to which Denny said "What am I supposed to do, BEAM myself to Boston every morning?" (a nod to his Star Trek past and the curious fact that the show seemed to be populated largely by ex Star Trek actors).
My favourite show as a teen, along with my Mum and Dad was Hill Street Blues. Bochco influenced David E Kelly who did The Practice and BL but also other great and quirky shows like Picket Fences. I sincerely wish Kelly would do another series like Boston Legal. It completely turned everyone's opinion of William Shatner as an actor around, forever no longer typecast as Captain Kirk.

For those who watched it back in 2003-04, the last season of The Practice was amazing, though not an ending that was true to the character of the show for most of its run. The show had slowed down and barely survived cancellation and timeslot changes multiple times. They cut the budget and fired most of the cast and those who remained looked bored and tired. Then Spader took over and put on an acting clinic week after week.

I am so delighted to read all the comments on Boston Legal and Alan Shore, though I have not seen the Practice. Boston Legal is not just good for the kind of issues it takes up in every episode, but also for the kind of office camaraderie that we need to emulate. The series changed my life, so much so that I would think and act like Alan Shore in my office. To tell you the truth, it has made me come out of my introvert behaviour. No one can beat James Spader in the role of Alan Shore, and I wonder if he would ever know how many lives he and David Kelley have changed by their TV series.

No, Jack Muller. I wasn't joking. One makes a lot of compromises everyday in the corporate world but on some fundamental issues you have to put your foot down even if it means losing your job. Second, I have a penchant for calling a spade a spade. After watching Alan Shore I stopped feeling bad about telling it like it is. Third, like Alan I am very good at estimating people and making good, worthy friends. And like him I have very few friends in office. Guess, I identified with that character. David Kelley's BL should enter the annals of filmmaking for making the best socially-relevant TV series and sub-texting.

The eighth season for 'The Practice' is one of those great examples of being able to make one of your greatest seasons from unfortunate conditions. As everyone knows, the budget cuts caused most of the cast to leave - however they were able to create a plot around why those characters left and the repercussions of that, bringing in a new character played by a great actor (James Spader) to interact with the remaining characters, building the entire season around it. The tail end of the season did become a bit of a prelude episodes to 'Boston Legal', but I think they were able to wrap up 'The Practice' at the same time by breathing new life into the show one last time.
The only other show I think did that well was "X-Files" Season 8 when David Duccuvney left and only appears in half the season, building a mystery story arc around his character that refreshed the entire show.

Every single thing he says about the American judicial system is accurate and a big reason why I gave up on pursuing a law degree after getting a bachelor's in CJ. Our court system is based on 2 things: the best debater wins and if you have enough money then you can buy your way to justice. Alan Shore is fun to watch, but is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with modern American jurisprudence. People like him exist and succeed in law. That's not a good thing. In a moral world, Alan Shore would have been disbarred and imprisoned. Instead people like him are lauded and get rich.

I love the dramatic legal soliloquy on law shows and movies. Nobody objects...
Closing or not, the judge would have shut this dirtbag down in 20 seconds and possibly ordered a contempt ruling...he'd have definitely been disbarred long ago.
It was an entertaining show, especially Alan and Denny....however it is too bad they couldn't have found work playing it straight as a new series of "The Defenders" with Shatner in the father role this time.

I've been referring to this episode for what? 20 years now. It's my #1 example of what is wrong with America. Been saying it for years. America is run by Lawyers and if you want to know what that means watch the last episode of "The Practice" It say's it all! It's a message by the Creator of the show. 20 years ago...David E. Kelly .... I heard you. LOUD AND CLEAR.

Boston Legal has brilliant moments. Boston Legal might also make you nauseated for what becomes the incessant sexual angle, which, apart from anything else, becomes exquisitely painful and tiresome. Of course these shows were written to be viewed one episode per week, but, even then..

@@jakeornot6306 The first season is the most problematic and I feel they got progressively better in that realm each season. Most likely due to the passing of time and slow moving cultural changes in the US. The addition of Candice Bergen's character really helped the show in that regard as well.

Do Law Firms in the US also offer Company Secretarial Services? Many Law Firms in my country Malaysia also act as Company Secretary(Corporate Secretary)-many Malaysian lawyers prefer to be Corporate Secretaries(which is legal to be practiced simultaneously by a lawyer under Malaysian Corporate Law) rather than help with people's problems.

The practice good old school show. Law has evolved since and especially T.V. law; which is uniquely different.
Has law dramas got better or worse?
I think the new shows focus on H&R issues. Inner relationships and are less focused on law. The fancy suits and conference rooms is how the shows are marketed; which is a form of pull marketing.

I love everything about The Practice
    and Boston Legal, especially the
    closing arguments of Alan Shore.
But his story of his uncle bringing
the pie to the family function is
    completely illogical.
He says his uncle was hungry
and if he brought the pie to the
function, he would get a slice.
But if he was hungry, why not
keep the pie at home or whenever,
then he would have the whole pie
to himself, instead of just a slice.

    • @spidlenexor
      @spidlenexor Před 2 lety

its not illogical, but in the scene is incomplete in context, the analogy works with the context of the series that its a succesful firm that attracts high profile and expensive clients, the reputation of the firm backs the expertise of the lawyers working on it, it wouldnt be the same if he worked alone or in a less reputable/cheaper firm, so "he attracts good expensive clients because he works in a good firm and will be paid handsomely for his services" becomes "he brings a pie to the party because he will get a slice"

Avengers Age of Ultron was a wonderful movie, and I respect Robert Downey as an actor, but the greatest actor in the movie wasn't even seen as a human being, and that was James Spader, and yet I don't get it. He could be a suprstar on the big screen, and he chooses to do TV instead.

James Spader has had a huge presence in the movies. He won best actor at Cannes for Sex Lies and Videotape and is lauded as a great actor in film as well as TV by directors and other actors. Check out all his other films from the 80s and up.
