She did this in one take. The first take. Understand she was also under the weather when she performed this. Just simply amazing.
For PMJ Creep fans, Haley officially answers an often mischaracterized ‘fact’ about the recording of their iconic cover of “Creep”: PMj had just done five shows on the road across Europe and she was feeling a little tired But she felt it was that she wasn’t feeling 100% that gave her that extra tug of emotion she needed for the performance.
“It’s been five shows, I’m pretty tired, I don’t know about this one….when it comes to those kinds of performances, I always give it 100% but I think emotionally, I was in a different place and really challenging something because I didn’t feel quite 100%, as far as being tired. It’s always really unique because I get to take my own stab and do the vocal arrangement…we’d only done it a few times on the road before that video. Alot of it is very jazz, very impromptu”

That song is a masterclass in vocal effects.
🎉❤
Her fluttery vibrato and natural smoky husk give me chills every time.
have you bought all her music on itunes yet? it makes for great road music. thanks
Haley Reinhart should be so much more famous that she is - her voice is just astonishing, right up there with whichever great you care to name. The cover of Can’t Help Falling In Love for the gum ad is awesome too.
when haley lost to scotty macready it really confirmed my idea that country artist have the best chance to win american idol. she is far and above him as a vocalist and checks every other box for a pop star. but the country loves country music so they tend to win those shows.
Also an unfair voting system that allowed stuffing the ballot boxes with unlimited votes per household.
She wore jeans with tears in them. Had she worn a dress, she could have won.
He was one of a long line of WGWG winners (white guy with guitar). Who else remembers Vote for the Worst? It was so fun pranking that terrible show but they did find a few gems like Haley.
Haley can do anything, and sometimes she does EVERYTHING : )
The smokey breathy start, the vowel modifications, beautiful mix voice, the cry and the rasps and those insane belts and little flips into and out of falsetto in a blink. The way she throws the endings or drops into muted vowels... that insane vibrato control... and the way she drops her larynx and descends into moody chocolatey nothingness? A well placed intake of breath that's almost percussive...
My god, she sustains one belt, on a difficult E vowel, forever and then just starts throwing it around like it owes her money... she has more support than a wonderbra... and then she goes and scats? girl, please!
And whilst pulling off all these high-wire vocal acrobatics, she still manages to choreograph all her movements beautifully to really draw you in - so naturally, like she could do all this AND ride a bike!
Let's face it, she's just effortlessly incredible... and, boy, don't it just make you sick?
LOL JK. Love her to itty bitty pieces.
Her voice makes me emotional. So good
After hearing Haley, you need to hear Morgan James covering "Dream on" with PMJ. She and Haley are absolutely amazing!
Robyn Adele Anderson has great covers too.
Neither Morgan James nor Robyn Adele Anderson put PMJ on the big map. Haley is PMJ’s top performer bar none.
Yes! This cover is gorgeous! ^_^
I concur
@lucky leprechaun to put annother Name of famoust singers on the List check out PMJ Songs with Sara Niemietz.
This performance is so good I sometimes forget it's live.
This is awesome. I can't wait. This is one of the greatest vocal performances I've ever heard. She uses ever voice effect known to man...Cries, yodels, rasp, husk, growl, asperate, belts, twang...she even scats. Haley is an absolute beast. You should consider doing her version of Tove Lo's "Habits", also with PMJ. Of course their version of "7 Nation Army", "All About that Bass", and "Don't Speak" are all amazing, but "Habits" doesn't get nearly enough attention.
Yes! I totally agree! ♥️
great reaction rachel. haley reinhart is one the greatest, most unique vocalist of our time. postmodern jukebox (or pmj) takes current popular songs and completely re-imagines them vintage (1920s to 1960s) in the music itself and style of the performances that actually take you back in time. they have a variety of good vocals but haley especially with postmodern jukebox is incredible. all the other haley/pmj ones are great also: "all about the bass", "habits", "black hole sun", "mad world", "seven nations army", "oops i did it again", "lovefool" and the very recent "don't speak".
i think what is so phenomenal about haley is not just her amazing silk to sandpaper voice but also her character and soul that she puts into the performances. even when she uses very little of her unique vocal acrobatics, her pure raw soft voice is amazing like in the intro of "creep". you see this even more in her solo platinum cover of "can't help falling in love" for the extra gum commercial which is truly stunning and frequently described as what love sounds like here: (czcams.com/video/_uNpEbt7w_o/video.html )
You should see what Haley & PMJ do with Gwen Stephanie's "Don't Speak" 🤣😍❤❤
Haley is probably my favorite singer. If you haven't seen her 7 nation army, do it!
The "scatting" is so great too.
Thse is one of the best of the best RadioHead´s song ever! This vintage version is so much perfect !!!
Scott Bradley: So, Haley, what kind of styles are you thinking of incorporating into the vocals?
Haley R: Yes
She did state in a recent interview that she does everything impromptu, and that’s how she approached this recording.
Scott should sell this song as a single - he'd make a zillion just like the Elvis cover going double platinum. oops.
She pulls all of the tricks out of her bag.
I know another version of Creep sang by Paulina Villarreal from the band The Warning. Just on Piano
Haley Reinhart is incredible. I've been aware of her since she was on American Idol in 2011.And yes, she can perform in assorted music genres. That run of non-words is called "scatting" made famous mostly by Ella Fitzgerald and other black artists back in the Big Band era.
That band though (Post Modern Jukebox) There was a time I literally had to tear myself away from the Internet because of them. They have a zillion videos, featuring a bunch of fantastic artists and alternating band members. No other band I can think of is in the same music niche they have carved out for themselves.
So, we've a great singer and a great band here. Then You get into the mix with your beautiful self ---"My Cup Runneth Over"😍😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🌊
Scott used to do this just for fun. He's a classically trained jazz pianist.and when he was younger he wouldvdo jazzcovers of contemporary music. After not being able to get a steady job as a jazz pianist, he decided to try doing these vitage covers of modern songs and filming it to put up on CZcams. He and some friends crammed into his tiny New York apartment and made it happen. The rest is history
She now owns the song!
I love this arrangement and Haley did a masterful job of singing this classic. Loved the scat she added. Paulina of the Warning ( the drummer) did her version of this for her Instagram followers. It is pretty amazing also..She follows pretty close to the original, but on her piano.
pmj is so great, but the singers we meet from pmj make it all. Haley is, IS what any singer works for. welcome to the rabbit hole of great voices and amazing arrangements.
What a spectacular rendition. I didn't know the song before Haley's version. Then I heard the original Radiohead version. The next version that I heard was by Paulina Villarreal of The Warning. Paulina did it as a challenge and had to learn it in a very short time. The version is just with Pau on piano and vocal. It is very stripped down but very impactful in its elemental way. Check it if if you have time. Sorry I don't have a link for you at this moment.
Her version of 7 Nation Army is also insane!
Haley also did a cover with Morgan James All About That Bass. She also collaborated outside of PMJ with Morgan on Dear Prudence (Beatles cover)
That song makes love to your ears and makes other singers wonder what they are doing with their life
Fantastic reaction! The term you're looking for is scatting. I highly recommend Black Hole Sun, Seven Nation Army, and Don't Speak. ALL of Haley Reinhardt with PMJ is fantastic, but those are the best in my humble opinion.
One of the best first takes ever produced - IMHO, Haley is one of the very best!
There's a CZcams bit where Haley is just chatting and singing with her dad in an old blues studio, a place he recorded in many times as a guitarist. Gives you a real strong sense of her roots.
and then for pure fun, the clip of her singing with Jeff Goldblum's band (yes, THAT Jeff Goldblum) is also pure gold
Chicago blues roots for sure. John Lee Hooker. Etta James. best of the best.
Mad World with Puddles Pity Party.
Puddles NEVER appears out of character and he's massive. He sings the first two verses and she steps out from behind him. Never knew she was there.
Scat singing is the phrase you were looking for! And Hailey is a master of it!!!! I love HR❤❤❤
She could sing the phone book in just about any genre, and it would be awesome.
I always wish it was possible to watch people react to this in the 50's
Great reaction! It doesn't matter if you know all the jargon and correct terminology. What matters is how it HITS you... and how a performance like this makes you feel. I think this is one of the most amazing individual performances I have seen. Like... ever. Between her vocals and the incredible band, the completely different take on this (already great) song just blew my mind.
It is one of the single greatest vocal performances, ever. EVER.
She was on American Idol, and she came in 3rd place. She is honestly just amazing.
Haley colors songs with the largest toolbox in the biz!! Yes that's an appropriate term, husky. This is done in one take....yes this is the one. She can scat for sure. A vocal masterpiece! She can sing anything. Feel like in in the Gin joint waiting for the lines from a Bogart movie, just smoke and whiskey and silk all rolled into one. With PMJ and Haley, "Black Hole Sun", "Love Fool", "Seven Nation Army", "Don't Speak", Nice reaction!!
I like watching reactions to this to watch people's faces when she goes into that totally ballsy, gutsy key change until the band catches up with her. For some people it doesn't register at all and then for others, like you, there is almost a look of confusion, like she missed a note in an otherwise perfect performance until then... and then the realization it was a key change.
Rachel, I am so excited to watch this, because I know I was the one that suggested this to you, post modern jukebox has so many amazing songs it’s a total rabbit hole you can disappear down for quite awhile! 🤪
Definitely one of my favorite covers. I think she also brings a very sultry quality to it as well.
Billie Holliday, you say? Try PMJ/Haley's 7 Nation Army! 30s New Orleans jazz w/ some Billie/Ella and Haley attitude. You'll love it! (please?)🥰
Rachel great job with your reaction and analysis of Vintage Postmodern Jukebox Ft Haley Reinhart and there cover of Creep From Radiohead. Looks like you enjoyed it and I'm hoping soon you check out Paulina from The Warning cover of this song on piano.
I saw her sing this live and it was awesome.
Scott Bradley in genius behind arrangement and Haley is a musical unicorn
Sultry, I do believe that is the word I would use. I loved your response young lady.
The term you were looking for is scatting. She does it well. Great reaction.
Scott Bradlee, the pianist, arranges PMJ's re-interpretations of classic tunes........the band is top notch.......he chooses the best vocalists ( Haley, Morgan James, etc, )......I felt I was transported to a 1950's jazz club........scotch and soda for everyone..........
3 words: 'Seven Nation Army'
That's nine words
@@johnnydeep412 - hey, whatever helps you sleep at night
Should check out Creep by Pau from The Warning. Just her on the family piano.
YES, YES, YES!! Time to try the Warning rabbit hole. Remember that Pau (Paulina) is the DRUMMER for this three-sister group from Monterey Mexico, currently touring Europe with Muse. Best new rock group out there. Check it out. czcams.com/video/A6Y4XpBxjU0/video.html
I concur
Since you are doing Creep covers how about Pau the drummer for The Warning covering Creep czcams.com/video/A6Y4XpBxjU0/video.html Now you have reacted to The Warning before but that was with Dany the guitarist singing (Dany sings lead on about 80% of The Warning songs with Pau singing lead on the other about 20%, yes even while she is drumming). Pau is fully capable of singing lead and fronting a band, and she has done so on a few occasions when they had access to another drummer. Ale, the bassist of The Warning, is also capable of singing lead but doesn't like too unless Dany needs to rest her voice.
Do Paulina Villarreal's cover you won't regret it
she is the best in business
great reaction
Her dad would scat at her as a baby. She also sang in her high school jazz band.
I love your reaction when you caught yourself swearing that made me laugh
"Scat" is a type of jazz singing in which the singer sings sounds rather than complete words.
A master class is vocal techniques.
love your descriptive reaction!
I loved the style in this video
I have my own tradition now: once I finish working, I lie down for a rest and watch your latest reaction to lift up the mood and have a couple of giggles. And yeah, I have a couple of your reactions that I watch before I go to sleep - Sleep Token's Summoning and AS's Critical Acclaim. That's the first time ever that I'm rewatching someone's reactions with this consistency lol. Some kind of spell I guess.
That just made my day. I mean, I’ve seen this cover but to see a genuine first reaction that enjoyed it that much was a breath of fresh air. Subscribe button hit, looking forward to more 🙌🏻
She is Jessica Rabbit, reincarnated. And teaming up with PMJ just shows it more. Great Post. And that " Bopp Itty Boop" thing, that is Scat or Scatting. She was scatting in that section of the song.
This is the best cover of this song.
Years ago she was on Idol.
She has a video called FREE~Haley Reinhart
Haley makes me cry ... every time. She is an old soul.
Haley seems to change persona as she moves from verse to verse. Her mouth takes the time to show distain as she sings, I'm a creep. Incredible performance.
Fun reaction!!! Made me want to explore your channel!
Haley and PMJ doing "Seven Nation Army" and "Black Hole Sun". Also, PMJ covering "All About That Bass". Do it. You're welcome.
Never cared for this song until this version came along. Haley doesn't need to wish she was special. Needless to say, Scott is a genius. For a chuckle, check out their collab of "All About That Bass" with Morgan James and Ariana Savalas.
Try Haley with PMJ singing Don't speak also great
Yaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy More PMJ!
Awesome, I had given this a ⬆vote and would have requested it if someone else hadn't already. I LOVE Haley's voice, her dynamics, her yodel, her growls. And she had one album after American Idol that I actually liked and it was total 50s diner era. PMJ has taken it to a whole 'nother level with her. PMJ does these jazzy arrangement, and both Haley and Morgan James are rock stars on any collab with PMJ.
Haley can scat!!! that is the term.
Also, you should check out her PMJ performance of No Doubt's "Don't speak"... that was awesome too.
Haley's dad taught her how to scat at a very young age (like 5). She makes it look easy and effortless.
Patti said Haley & Harry did call and response scatting before Haley could talk, so earlier than that
Haley is amazing. She also did 'Can't Help Falling in Love' for an Extra Gum commercial that sometimes pops up on CZcams. May I suggest reacting to Pentatonix if you haven't seen them.
Haley is special 😊 enjoy!
Very nice reaction. She does sing many styles, rock, pop and jazz. I am a rock guy so I especially love when she sings rock. She is so very talented.
Haley has no equal. Absolutely untouchable.
The whole premise of postmodern jukebox is to take songs and perform them under other genres... Like this is being performed like a lounge singer or jazz stylist would perform it.
In the following video, Scott Bradlee talks about PMJ's creation of their version of Creep. They did two studio versions with different vocalist. They now have a third vocalist on tour. Haley did, in fact, do this video in ONE take as Scott explains in the video. czcams.com/video/MskKSH1Kf4U/video.html
They did a Aerosmith cover with Morgan James that was also pretty awesome.
Scatting is the term you were looking for.
Loved the reaction. Subscribed. Maybe try Haley's LoveFool, Habits, or Oops I did it again.
Now you need to listen to PMJ and Morgan James covering Aerosmith's "Dream On." Incredible and Morgan IMO is the best singer out there right now.
FLAVA INDEED!! haha. This and PMJ's cover of "Dream On w/ Morgan James" is another great
Husky is right...her natural speaking voice is very very husky
This is the best rendition I've heard besides Hallie Bailey's rendition of this song.
Subscribing in the hope you review more from Haley. Maybe the best singer of our generation. Drops mic.
Wondering how Radiohead likes someone else owning this song. She makes Radiohead sound like a coma
How about a reaction to Kamelot when Roy Khan was the main vocalist, epic power metal band...!! Elizabeth I, Abandoned or A sailorman's hymn are a few examples that shows his vocal range ♥
The season Haley Reinhart was on American Idol and didn't win was the last season of American Idol I watched. It took me ten years to realize that that show wasn't about who the most talented or who was the best singer but who would the producers be able to control the most. Haley did things her way and that was why I was a fan of hers.
Absolutely beautiful!
This is a great version.
Rachel, the term you are looking for regarding that riff is scat, first used I believe in bebop and jazz 🤓
Go for seven nation army pmj and Hayley
This was all done in one take
Funny, just yesterday another reactor did the Radiohead version, and when I suggested this cover, and Pau's version, I got a few comments derogatory to the very concept of covers. I didn't dignify them with replies.
You should have.
Haley’s version is far more entertaining than Radiohead.
I hope you make time for their version of Dream On. I bet you’ll love it.
Love this so much.
There is a reason why this video has 118M views
Classy
She/They do an amazing version of No Doubt’s Don’t Speak too.
You need to see the PMJ torch song cover of Aerosmith's "Dream On."
It's... Bananas. So good.
I feel like you would like Bad Omens a lot. I recommend checking out The Death of Peace of Mind, or Like A Villain!
