  • This is a video in which I try to find out an optimal temperature for soldering. I show you that there’re many factors which have impact on the temperature you use during soldering.

300 to 350. This will save you time

The video is perfect demo why you can't solder large areas with tiny soldering iron tip and underpowered heater. Both things matter. Anyone who want to solder also large areas must invest twice more and get soldering iron with at least swapable T12 tips. And then use T12-C4 tip for area soldering on circuit boards.

Hi there! Great video with very useful tips. I have a quick question.
I recently purchased a Hakko soldering station FX-888D and I now have learned that occasionally (for example if you change the tip) you have to calibrate the temperature. The thermometer you showed in the video would be ideal but it is a substantial extra investment on top of the soldering station.
Can you recommend a less expensive option?
    Thank you for sharing.

Hi, unfortunately the one in the video is the cheapest version I found.

@@zeroampselectronics Thank you. At the end of the day, as the saying goes, you get what you pay and you pay for what you get. I can appreciate quality has its price.

*_You can use the thermocouple that comes with the multimeters._*

Too big piece of copper for such a small iron. It cools down your iron. Take a small piece of pcb and try then.

Hi, yes that was my intention to show users what they can expect. Of course they won't use it with such big components.

heat dissapation vs volume , material ,and resistance ? wonder if its silver soldering or is it just lead ?

@@_6666- he clearly states as much (and it's not silver solder) ... but yeah, dissipation is the culprit here

what is the ideal temp for de soldering components off of motherboards?

Hi, I don't have much experience with removing components from motherboards try other channels.

big copper plate is too much, as copper is taking quite some heat away from soldering area, bad experiment sorry

Elevation has a huge impact on required temperature. I live at 8,000 ft and I have to keep my iron at 800 F just to be able to wet the solder. Even then it takes up to 5 seconds when I touch the iron to the component. Of course I don't have all day, so I just touch the iron directly to the solder. Not common practice but it works fine for me.
You lowlanders might be able to get away with 500-600
