    Climate Change: The Facts (2019)
We're just two degrees away from a climate catastrophe. If the rate of global warming continues, we'll reach the threshold for permanent environmental damage within 40 years. But we have the power to prevent it. Using dramatic user-generated content and emotional first-hand testimony, this film delivers the facts about global warming simply and strikingly. Intimate stories get inside the lives of the people affected by climate change, and those fighting it. And world-leading experts reveal the developments that are redefining our horizons. This is the greatest challenge we've faced. And the human race can rise to it.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

If +1.0 C since 1880, since we are thriving now, then why would another +0.5 C spell certain doom? That's their actual claim, not +1.0 from now, unless this represents a change in the narrative and BBC has been chosen as the ones to announce it, moving the goal posts. Scientists say there were warmer periods than ours now and civilizations thrived then, Egyptian, Roman and Medieval Warm Periods

People tend to only show concern when major events or personal circumstances affect them. As humans, we often prioritize our own interests and fail to extend the same level of care and concern to others. This raises the question: why is it so hard to care for others? Perhaps it's because there's no monetary reward for doing so. However, if we want to make the world a better place, we need to start caring more. Though it may be challenging, it's important to start taking action now. After all, if we don't start now, when will we?

It is not widely appreciated that higher global temperatures do not mean a drier planet. Higher temperature speeds up the hydrologic cycle, increasing the rate of evaporation from the oceans and increasing rainfall overall. Some places will see higher rainfall - of course this is no consolation for places that will be drier.

I'm reading comments and wondering if some actually watched the video. Some folks have a hard time understanding that yes, we've had warm periods in the past, but with our dramatically increased reliance on technological advances today, a lot of our activities cause more CO2 to be released, so the effects will continue to snowball and become more frequent until we either figure out a way to maintain or immediately reduce carbon levels. A 100 years ago, there were a lot less cars, air travel was in its infancy, industry was still growing. And all these just to name a few all have one thing in common. CO2. Meanwhile, we haven't even come close to matching those in terms of activities that eliminate carbon.
As much as we like to romanticize space travel, we still only have one earth, one home, and we must keep it livable for all species.

Another obvious trait that falsifies these claims of global warming. Ocean front real estate is and continues to boom, worldwide. Presenting this is good, and for those who are still unaware of the overall damage, this short video can be informing ... but at least presenting one solution, one direction, one action, at the end of the video would make even more sense!
What other energy could we use? What actions could we do to reduce the use of energy, and by extension the use of coal-fueled electricity? What professional jobs could be more meaningful for our planet? What type of volunteering "for the planet" would be much more impactful? ... those are questions i hope BBC Earth can put a light on.
Where i live, electricity is very cheap, but i try to use as small a quantity as i possibly can (adapting to the cold instead of using heaters in the early winter, same during summer, taking cold showers more than before, walking more instead of taking my electric vehicle, etc.) but still .. i don't think my efforts are what's having much real impact; so having more leads would have been appreciated BBC Earth (and your documentaries) [not blaming you, just an important suggestion, so you too can have a positive impact!]

I can tell you what's vital in countries with cold winters:
      1. Switch from oil heaters to heat pumps. Why? For 1kWh of oil the oil heater only produces less than 1kWh of heat. The heat pump on the other hand makes 3-5kWh of heat from 1kWh of electricity. We save up to 80 percent of the primary energy for heating by doing that. That's massive without any decrease in comfort.
      2. Switch from a fossil fuel powered car to an electric car (or bicycle or public transport). Why? A gasoline powered car uses about 70kWh per 100km. An electric car just uses 20kWh/100km. So we decrease the primary energy demand in this sector by about 70 percent.
      3. We need to massively expand our installation of photovoltaic panels and wind turbines. All studies show that they are the pillars of renewable energy systems. It's impossible to make the necessary energy transition without those two energy sources. The good news that has been largely unnoticed: electricity from wind turbines and photovoltaics is now the cheapest form of electricity. In fact it's even more amazing. In 2020 the IEA called electricity from photovoltaics "the cheapest electricity in history".
Every person should know and understand those three points. The energy transition is a bit more complicated than that, but those are the things that the average person needs to know. Other measures like energy storage and negative emission technologies are things that mainly industries need to be concerned with - not average citizens.
Of course there are other things that are more well known
-Flying: The distance is crucial here and the main cause for the emissions. In two 8-hour flights you can easily double your yearly CO2 emissons simply because you can travel such a large distance in thouse 8 hours. So simply travelling less far has a huge impact and of course one can have vacations that are just as nice, but less far away. It's going to be cheaper as well.
-Eat less meat and animal products. You'll safe a lot of money by doing that.
-Get informed about what the science says about global warming and the solutions. The IPCC reports are an excellent way to start
-Get politically involved. A lot of the necessary emission cuts won't happen without the right policies. Don't fall for empty promises. You want realistic and concrete measures that climate scientists will say have the desired effect.

The heat pump on the other hand makes 3-5kWh of heat from 1kWh of electricity. We save up to 80 percent of the primary energy for heating by doing that. That's massive without any decrease in comfort." Is absolute rubbish.
Heat pumps are not magic. Your statement implies heat pumps somehow are able to violate the second law of thermodynamics, that is undeniably impossible. Entropy is a one way trip in this universe and nothing, certainly not your heat pump; can violate the second law! YOU CAN NOT GET MORE ENERGY OUT OF A SYSTEM THAN YOU PUT INTO THE SYSTEM!

Thanks for making my point. I'm mentioning those technologies because so many people aren't aware of what they are capable of doing in terms of energy.
No, heat pumps certainly aren't magic and yet what i've written is completely true and not at all controversial in physics. It's simple thermodynamics, but thermodynamics that many people aren't aware of.
If you had googled heat pumps before you wrote your comment you would have noticed this ;)
So how does it work? And why doesn't it violate any law of thermdynamics?
The clue is in the name "heat pump". A heat pump is nothing new. You can look at a refrigerator as a heat pump. You turn on the heat pump and one side gets hot and the other side gets cold. What this allows you to do is pump heat from the enviroment into your house. So those 2-4 additional kWh don't come out of nowhere, but from the enviroment. The reason why this work is because you can get the cold side (heat exchanger) colder than the enviroment and as you surely know heat flow from warm to cold. So if the cold side of your heat pump is colder than the enviroment it will get heat or thermal energy from the outside and transport it/pump it to the inside.
So you invest 1kWh of electric energy, the cold heat exchanger gets 2-4kWh of energy from the enviroment and the hot side releases 3-5kWh of thermal energy.
I teach physics myself and unfortunately it's the physics teachers fault why their students don't know about this highly relevant technology. I make sure that i teach about this technology whenever i can. It's some very counterintuitive thermodynamics.
"YOU CAN NOT GET MORE ENERGY OUT OF A SYSTEM THAN YOU PUT INTO THE SYSTEM!"
So this is ture. But you missed that the cold side is taking heat from the enviroment because it's colder than the enviroment.
      So energy in:
      Electricity + heat from enviroment
      Energy out:
      thermal energy into your house
And of course we also have some losses due to friction etc.

A good place to start would be getting over having our cake and eating it too, getting over cognitive dissonance and our have it all mentality. Every decision has impact. for example, the discovery of a rich lithium deposit in Maine has sparked debate over whether to mine considering the potential impact associated with open pit mines, which are less prone to sulfide release into the environment when the deposit is lithium. Many people are pro renewables, for which lithium will likely be important, but are anti mining. getting over our cognitive dissonance will go a long way to improving our ability to overcome this impasse in the long run and improve our long term chances by likely addressing the problem effectively.

It is very complicated to make predictions, it is said that with similar results human life would be restricted to parts of Canada and Russia... Here in Tenerife the place with the best climate on the planet, we have just had 2 months with average temperatures +5º-7º. In recent days the temperatures have finally returned to normal...
