My taxidermist later scored the buck at 170-5/8 inches gross typical (163-3/8 net). I had been too conservative in my measurements, and I had taken the left and right H4 measurements in the wrong place.
I was just getting ready to close this and move on but something kept telling me I need to congratulate you on a beautiful buck. He’s great. You didn’t state your age but I’m 78. I’ve been hunting deer since I was 16. In 2018 at the age of 73 I killed my best buck ever. He was 11 points with a perfect rack with no broken tines. I got in in the National Forest here in Va. with a muzzleloader. I was 1 mile back in and I thought I would never get it drug out but I did. I got it at 9:15 am and got it to my truck at 4:15 pm. I was so worn out I couldn’t load it myself. Finally some kind natured gentleman stopped and helped me load it. I loved hearing you pray about the recovery and a successful hunt. I did the same thing. God is good. Take care.
Hi, Gary. Thans for the congratulations. I did mention, in the video, that I'm 75 years old. Actually I was a few months short of 75 when I got that buck. Congratulations on your 11 pointer too. You must be quite a man to drag a deer out that far. I couldn't have done it. To top it off, you got yours on public land. I am fortunate to have my own land and I can drive my electric Polaris Ranger right up to my blinds. I do have to conceal it though because, if the deer see it, they spook. I also feel good any time I see videos of hunters who immediately thank God for the blessing after they harvest a deer.
Congratulations! What a buck!! Nothing like that sound when the arrow impacts. Keep inspiring!! I often miss the deadline for the Non-Resident Draw license, for a few states...lol...but one day my memory won't forget me and I am going to apply.
Thanks for the comments. You are too generous! I just make videos to send info to family and friends but I'm happy when others can enjoy them. CZcams is a convenient way to send files that are too file intensive for email. I am flattered whenever anyone subscribes to my channel but I know a lot of people enjoy pics and videos of nice bucks and turkeys, etc. I'll keep posting whenever I have something of interest and I think others might benefit from the info. I have posted several YT videos and you can find all of them by searching for my name. Happy New Year
Thanks for the comment and kind wishes. God bless you too and may you have great hunting as well. We have a couple good bucks showing up on camera this year and our son, from Billings, MT, just called me and suggested I sleep in the hunting blind, where the big bucks are showing up, on Sunday night because the archery season starts Monday. Those bucks are showing up in daylight now but probably will go nocturnal soon. My next CZcams video will probably show those two good bucks.
Yeah, I've heard so many horror stories about rage broadheads and other similar broadheads. It's a good thing you found at least part of it. Nice nice buck!! Congratulations on your harves. When I first started considering hunting, I was looking at many types of broadheads, and I have never, thank goodness, used a mechanical. I started with fixed blades, and I will continue to stay with fixed blades
I use Satellite 100 grain 3 blade fixed blade broadheads on the arrows for my compound bow but my son wanted us to use Rage mechanical broadheads on the crossbow. Thanks for your comments. Tom
Thanks, Corey. I'm going to continue to try to get a shot on camera but, now that I have shot a 170, I may not ever get a chance on a buck of that caliber again so I may not take another shot for a long time. Once we get all the venison eaten, from our freezer, I may get less picky. Time will tell. Good hunting to you. Tom
Again, thank you, SIR! I wish I could invite others to hunt our 99 acres, but it is hunted only by my immediate family and one other young fellow from our church. I also have a friend in MN that has hunted for turkeys on our land. We feed corn year around and have about 18 trail cams out all year. The 170 class (gross) deer I got in 2022 represents the top end in our area, as far as I know. My 80-year-old friend has hunted the area for 60 years and he says there used to be 200 class bucks in the area but not over the last 10 or 20 years. The trophy quality seems to be getting better now though. We manage for trophies and so do the folks hunting adjacent properties, but I'm concerned because one of our neighbors just sold her 123 acres adjacent to our place. I hope the new owners won't have the "brown is down" attitude.
Yes. As I'm sure you know, one spends day after day, hunting that one or two shooter bucks and the magic usually happens in a minute. Unfortunately, I don't have one of those cameras that can be operated from a stick, and I don'focused
I used a Barnett Raptor.....400 FPS...the video shows that in letters that show on the screen at 3:11 into the video. Thanks for the question. I think the crossbow cost about $6oo at Academy Sports at the time.
Thanks. My 2022 buck is only the second deer shot by our crossbow and the first time I have ever shot at a deer with a crossbow. The tremendous arrow speed and energy probably requires a tougher broadhead. I use Satellite broadheads with my compound bow, but I'll bet Muzzies are as tough as any. Take car, Fellow Hunter.
@@tomhaeder1389 got ya, i think i have tried about every mechanical head made out of my crossbow to test how they hold up. i settled on the 1.75" swhackers, they hold up fine on my very old and hard 3D deer target where most others break blades on it. i purchased a life time supply of them this past year. i shot a doe, a 9 pointer, and a turkey with them in 2022 and all the heads are fine, still spin true, and just needed the blades touched up before going back in my quiver.
Nothing makes me more upset than to see people put-up so-called hunting videos, only to watch them hunt over feeders. THAT IS NOT HUNTING THAT"S KILLING!!! That type of killing is illegal in many states. You can't hunt over a baited area. I am glad you were able to harvest y our buck in the comfort of your little man cave,
22 states allow hunting over bait or a feeder, just under half. 9 allow you to use dogs, 10 don’t allow rifles. The point is, he or anybody else should be able to hunt by any legal means he chooses without unnecessary criticism from an arm chair warrior. Don’t like the video, don’t watch it. Putting people down for how they hunt is exactly why this sport doesn’t bring in new hunters.
Thanks for your comment, Herman. I know a lot of hunters feel like you do. I also use bait when fishing. I also rifle hunt and some think that is cheating. I use a crossbow and some think that is cheating. We knew this big buck very well from trail cam pics but none of the hunters in the area, including myself, had ever seen him on the foot in person. I set my sights very high and pass up a lot of pretty good bucks and that is what offers a challenge for me. I probably will have to pass up all the bucks now, waiting for a buck bigger than the one I got in 2022. Nevertheless, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, and I wish you good hunting by whatever means you choose to use, provided it is legal. Tom
@@mikethomas7741 I understand what you are saying however, I stand by my statement. I am well aware of a states rules before I hunt. I apologize for offending anyone. But to watch a guy like the hunter from the netflix series meat eater, now, that's hunting!!!

@tomhaeder1389 I have considered sleeping in the blind a few times myself but never did it. Would be very interesting to see how that turned out 🙏
I great shot on a nice buck. Congratulations and I hope you have much success in the future.
