    I got to meet you today at Aquashella, and you know how they say, "never meet your heroes"? Well, you disproved that adage. You were so friendly and personable. You took the time to have genuine conversations with people & everyone left happy. I came to Aquashella for my birthday with my 2 kids and had said to myself I'd get the VIP package if you were going to be there, but you aren't on the list! But that didn't matter, I still got to meet you, you gave me some advice on my new shell-dweller tank, and I got to shake your hand. Thank you for making a great trip even better.

    @suvinuoska Před 14 dny +4

    I didn't see anyone commenting about this, so: houseplants! The one in the shellfish tank looks like a china doll plant (Radermachera sinica). I had one years ago, but it could not withstand direct sunlight, and I had no better spot for it at the time, so it died. Happy to see yours growing so well :) And the leaf you thought might be a monstera among the pothos is indeed a monstera. Monstera leaves are not always split; a young specimen or one growing under low light will only grow smaller, intact leaves.
    Also I 100% get what you mean with fish socializing together. The absolute best part of caring for an aquarium for me is seeing my cories interact with each other

      I have a similar occurrence in my tank that's placed opposite a window. I prefer to keep snails and plecs to graze on the algae. It's good food for them and I don't need to clear the glass much. Maybe better than blacking out the side?

    I was struggling with that horrible brown stringy algae in a new tank I set up. I would remove most of it when I did a water change and it would have covered the tank in a few days. It slowly grew back less and less each time and I got a group of amanos which completely got on top of it in less than a week. They completely transformed the tank which I was on the verge of tearing down and starting again.

    • @Krishnath.Dragon
      @Krishnath.Dragon Před 15 dny +1

      I've always thought that the best way to get on top of algae is the biological method. Algae eating animals such as Amano. In my new setup I am working on, I currently have ten cherry shrimp (added a little over a week ago) and three small Ancistrus catfish (added yesterday). It's a 350L tank (Rio 350 specifically), so it'll take a while for them to deal with the algae, but they will deal with it, particularly as the cherry shrimp start to reproduce and the catfish start to grow. Fast growing plants also help, of course, and the stems in the tank have started to accelerate their growth.

    You can also do hostas in the tops of the tanks as well. I have one in a floating basket in my stock tank pond that has tripled in size since i put it in a month ago. They are good for sucking out nitrates too.

    • @The_Crucible714

      My experience with hostas is they have species-specific requirements most easily replicated in outdoor situations. There are a few miniature varieties but even they tend to fill out horizontally and grow rather large fairly quickly. I would be interested in knowing how they do in an indoor paludarium type set-up.

  • @SJLamb-te3dt
    @SJLamb-te3dt Před 15 dny +1

    MD you should spend a bit of time looking into getting different kinds of pothos. There is a huge variety of pothos. Lots of colors and there are some with huge leaves and some with very small leaves. Colors from very dark green to silver to neon charteuse to half green and half white. You could really get more out of your filtering plants. You play so much with color and structure with your aquatic plants but you use the same three houseplants over and over, which is fine! But there are multiple varieties of those three houseplants and I am sad that you are missing out.

    • @The_Crucible714
      @The_Crucible714 Před 15 dny

      Absolutely! I never knew there were so many types of pothos! Unfortunately many nurseries (in the US especially) only stock the two or three most common varieties. One often needs to go to specialty mail-order nurseries which sometimes only list them by name. A certain amount of research in advance may be necessary to get the desired plants.

    • @SJLamb-te3dt
      @SJLamb-te3dt Před 6 dny

      @@The_Crucible714 I have found that family run nurseries and general plant nurseries that have a house plant area will sometimes have more interesting ones. At the big hardware stores like Home depot and Lowes I have only seen green, neon (rarely), golden varigated, and white and green, again rarely. I have had much better luck at nurseries.

    You may want to investigate
    a mini waterlily in the “Leopardus” family. The leaves are greenish-bronze with dark red spots and stems. I once grew them in a shallow, terrace pond/fountain then moved them indoors to a 50 gal tank to over-winter. Because you mentioned “red” plants you may like it. Allow the pads to break the surface and they throw out small, bright, sky-blue, (fragrant) waterlilies. The blooms are held aloft several inches above the water’s surface. A hint with all waterlilies; they absolutely love bonemeal. If you can’t get tablets I made my own mixing equal parts regular, gardener’s bonemeal and high-clay content soil in a little cheesecloth package I’d zip-tie closed. Waterford Gardens greenhouses taught me this fertilization technique and my lilies thrived and bloomed profusely as a result.

    Hi MD,
    Have you cleaned the tank prior shooting the video? I never see a single fish poop on any on your videos, what’s your secret recipe?

    Do you find the 'house plants' take up too many nutrients from the water? D

    What’s the latin name of the plant you put in the tank?
    Wanna put it in my tank, but the flower stores in Serbia can’t really help me what plants go into fish tanks…

      Totally. I’ve tried to watch Matt’s channel but getting his entire family involved often dilutes the content. If you watch a YT channel for aquarium scaping you don’t necessarily want to see “home movies”of his family, his kids, the dogs, etc, etc.. I think unless he stays on topic the YT algorithm will begin to bury him.

    Would be cool to see each tank done using 3 different methods. Thinks like canister vs sponge vs hang on back filters. Expensive light vs cheap light vs diy. Compost vs aqua soil vs sand. Things along those lines.

    This channel, studio for me obtained received it's own atmosphere, relaxing quite a little piece of feeling you are in botanical aquaristic glass public garden , where you go outside to find another places of the earth, and here by this media you can find some kind this feeling. It's not the same like in real but a piece of this. Some channels on yt have this suspension activity relax you can feel by monitor screen adrenaline and willing to seat and watch.
