"it works, it doesnt work, it kinda works, it kinda doesnt work" is THE most relatable sentance i have ever heard when working with robots on a time crunch
Oh yes, even when I was working with lego technic in competitions.
im building giants production lines for car manufacturers and i can assure you thats its the same .. atleast the first couple days
I'm super invested in this series, Orbitron has amazing potential
@@pezzi1481 It dug straight through steel, that things packing a whole beat down.
I remember over 6 years ago asking hacksmith if they would ever consider doing or supporting a battle bots team (I was competing in 15lbs NRL at the time). James said they couldn’t because he understood how much of a financial challenge something like this is, even the little 15lbs bots cost multiple thousands of dollars. To see how far him and his team have come is actually incredible and I wish your team all the luck in the future James.
Having competed with 15s myself really makes you appreciate the heavys even more.
@@elitesniper923 fr, the scale is just insane. getting enough power to move that mass fast is really impressive
Every time they run into tech issues trying to get the bot to work in the field, I'm at least a little reassured Skynet is a long way from taking over the world.
Its not so simple. Humans make mistakes and its not so easy to find the root cause and fix it. Meanwhile AI knows the issue immediately and can selfheal or find solution quickly.
@@Teeeh4723 I have to disagree, since it is hard to diagnose yourself. The AI won't know if its broken because it has no inherent reference as to how it should function. Only if it has some sort of self-diagnosis software can it repair itself.
@@Teeeh4723Also have you ever tried to let ChatGPT or even more specialized "Coding AIs" code something complex? Cause it always does something stupid.

Between 1998 and 2004 the UK had a version of Battlebots called Robot Wars. I absolutely loved it as a kid. The amazing engineering of it all definitley inspired me as a kid to get into electronics, 3D Printing, etc. Great to now see it thriving across the pond!
I watched both shows as a kid. I really liked the designs of the house bots.
@@Bobbias well it funny cos lots of the house robots were previous contestants
Pretty sure it started in the USA and The Master was champion. Think I have seen team Razor at battle bots also.
I remember going home and turning in the TV and seeing Robot wars was on and being ecstatic
@@chriscoulthard4947 guy from lucasfilm created the original robot wars concept and done a few events in the US until they partnered with a production company that eventually created the robot wars tv show for the UK
Battle Bots have been going for awhile but actually watching a match with stuff from behind the scenes and all just makes me think Real Steel can definitely come true one day
Real Steel already came true, it was based on an IRL toy lol. Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots.
Honestly, this battle bot series is the most wildly entertaining shit you guys have released in a while. Love the documentation of working under pressure, youre team handled it well
After starting an FRC team and spending 4 years in competitive robotics I'm glad to see that nothing changes in professional robotics

Used to do FIRST Robotics Competition. Watching all this brings back some PTSD level memories of rebuilding a team's full robot between a Wednesday night and Saturday morning. Taught them a lot and learned a lot myself. I was troubleshooting the wiring in my head as you guys were. I was screaming check the battery connector! Such an easy point of failure but seeing that thing go whole hog in that arena was so satisfying. Simple robots work and this proves it.
I also did FRC. I have PTSD from staying right until the PIT Admin kicked us out because they all wanted to go home lol.
I am currently in FRC and this is exactly how it all goes down every time without fail!
currently a member and what you say is so true, there is so much sportsmanship in FRC and its severely underrated.
I was in FTC in high school, and yep, even though they were smaller robots, the same sentiment applied. It's always the battery connection.
As a designer of my own airsoft gear I have to say that I love that you show all of the preparation and failed tests.
Building something that works is easy
Building something that works in every condition, under hard stress all the time is extremely difficult
From someone who battles smaller beetleweight combat robots, I know how much stress is in when your robot doesn't work and you're trying to fix it fast.
Keep up the good work Hacksmith Team ❤
Yeah having competed at smaller classes really makes you appreciate what goes into making a heavyweight.
"And we got data so we can keep improving."
Spoken like a true engineer! I hope we get to see more of the Orbitron adventures!
16:35
I can absolutely relate to this interview. I'm the driver for our FRC team (Team 1287 Aluminum Assault), and the lack of actual game sense is REAL. In those few moments, nothing matters besides what the robot is doing in that exact moment. I don't really get to see how the match went 'till I watch the video replay 😂
19:14 XD The little Rc car got completely savaged right before the buzzer. That's the sign of a well tuned killing machine.
It's absolutely amazing to see the difference between the first and second versions of Orbitron, and the team coming together to overcome every hurdle in their way. I love this series.
Orbitron is already looking like a seasoned competitor. Can't wait to see it in Battlebots World Championship VIII
Glad to see Gluten Free is alive and now thriving in Battle Bots! It was always such a joy to see their robots back in FTC, and it's still a joy now. Good luck in the TV tournament Hacksmith!
21:02 Very cool to see a clip from my interview with Trey Roski on this channel! I'd love to have you on for an episode to chat about Orbitron!
Happy to be a member and able to support awesome builds like this. Congratulations, you guys!! Good work.
Well done lads! Proud to be a part of Shred-Tech on this journey!
Absolutely dominating performance. Please proactively take part in battlebots and eventually fight the top ranked bots like Endgame, hydra, Riptide, Sawblaze etc
Well part of the point of these Proving Grounds events that this is at is to narrow down who might get accepted for future seasons.
Assuming there is any *glares at Warner Bros. Discovery who as far as i can tell have made no moves to commission another season.*
@@233Deadman I believe they've confirmed the next season but no type of schedule has been released yet
Great job guys, awesome work, quick thinking on your feet.
Absolute respect for disarray and minibot too.
Congratulations on the win, guys!! Well done to Ben for being a great team leader and holding this project together.
One of my favorite things about Battlebots is how involved Trey and Greg are all these years later.
When a bot sets on fire, Trey is the one that puts on saftey gear and goes into the box.
I've been watching your videos since 2018. Its amazing how you went from Captain America's Electromagnet shield to fighting in battlebots. Its incredible! ❤
This was nerve wracking when they had all the issues 24 hours till fight time. Battlebots engineering is no joke. You guys did awesome!
I absolutely love this battlebot, it looks amazing and the spinning blade weapons are soooo satisfying when they strike.
Big congrats to the team! I can only imagine how great it felt to have things turn around and come out with a victory after all the issues you had with the first battles. Looking forward to seeing what this bot can achieve going forward and what further improvements you all can/will make.
Fantastic job boys! Special shout-out to Bogdan cause I love the energy he was bringing right before and after the fight!
Soo stocked with Orbitron.
The way it switched between the two weapons was epic. Win the weapon to weapon with the blue bar and then switch to the heavy hitter full disk on the exposed backside.
Ufff. Very stocked to keep seeing more. May all the cables be nested happily.
Gluten free dominating yet another robotics competition? Can't say I'm surprised
Watching the robots battle it out was thrilling! Can't wait to see more. Thank you for the detailed insights into the build process as well.
Wow! You guys really knocked it out of the park this time!
Baby shark ain't gonna be singin' do do do do do do anytime soon!

This just might be my favorite project ever
I love this channel so much, it’s definitely been a huge influence in me wanting to become a robotics engineer! Currently in my first year of electrical engineering!
I can't even describe how excited i am to see orbitron on Championship VII with the likes of sawblaze, witch doctor, and all the legends of the sport.
I am so happy everything worked out with the second set of fights.
Ill be cheering for them every minute!!!!
That little rc car got violated 🤣🤣
I used to watch BB as a kid, would love to see more of this!
The way I laughed when he flipped over and turned on the mini bot 😂😂😂 he was like heeeeelllppp
The electromagnetic grab to the playing field mod is EPIC
LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Nice job, guys. That's definitely a proud accomplishment.
Holy shit that thing is terrifying. The noise it makes is insane!
If y'all can just get over your electronics issues you will have a very serious contender.
That first fight was incredibly aggressive and efficient, really great control, probably engaging the autonomous systems well. The opponent didn't even get a chance to spin up, aim, and hit.
Compete and utter DESTRUCTION! Freaking LOVE IT SO MUCH!
So proud of the team 😮
Congratulations guys, really great performance
Having been through many years of FIRST robotics, both in high school and as a mentor, I love seeing the excitement the team gets from a win, and the resolve to combat any issues that arise. The dedication and payoff is what makes sports like these so great. Cant wait to see Orbitron on the big screen!
So proud of y'all. BattleBots was a childhood dream of mine, and is so amazing getting to see all the hard work and knowledge y'all put into it! Keep us posted of any matches you have audiences for, would love to buy some tickets!
Great use of AI, it didn't interfere at all. It used up resources, took wages and sounds impressive without actually making any difference. Perfect application.
As a member, I'm super hyped that I could help make this happen even a little bit.
having competed in this year's Indiana state robotics competition, i would say that that is one of the coolest robots i have ever seen in a competition. Also great job fixing the problems with your robot, happy to see you guys win.
im so happy you partecipate to battlebots and has good video coverage on what goes behind, all the work to make the robot run
congratulations..Orbitron is a cool robot and it got an awesome team of young and talented people taking care of it. Keep it up and can't wait to watch all its fight.
You need to keep this going. I would love to see you on tv
My friend has decided he also wants to make an ai powered battlebot, but beetle weight or antweight idk which one he chose
Antweight is a good one to start with or to learn with, it is also really fun!

you guys are absolutely legendary!!!!! i was so excited to see the previous BB videos and it makes me so happy to see the success!! i cant wait to see you on BB. i believe with the engineering capabilities of your team, you guys will crush anyone. i expect you to go pro!!
Probably my favourite series of this channel as of now
Steven, when someone hands you something for an accomplishment, normally you would shake their hand and thank them-especially the co-founder of battle bots.
Completely Awesome!!
Making the AI smarter and more autonomous would be a must. It would be so cool if it could actually predict things look at what It's best angle of attack is and plan. Making a neural network that sophisticated though would be very difficult and I don't think you all have the training data and you would need a more powerful computer. But making it smarter is definitely what should happen in some form or another.
Man... So happy for you guys. What an awesome piece of engineering!
best series yet!
Congrats. I'm really impressed how you didn't give up and fixed the issues. It seems like an expensive hobby
Yeah economically the sport makes no sense... these videos don't even make it break even lol
@@hacksmith The engineering must be a huge headache having to compete against so many other great minds. I guess it helps people get ready for how ruthless the real world is when engineering products. At least doing this the victor is the better engineering and not better marketing.
@@hacksmith I see, then it helps prepare you for a world of total chaos

This is such a good series I love it I just wish I had money to become a channel member so I could see the vids sooner
Awesome guys!! Looking real smooth in there!
Its cool to just see the behind the scenes! It really shows that despite how many precautions the bots have, everything that can go wrong probably will go wrong. There are some things that just can't be prevented, but its amazing to see how you fix everything and figure out what needs to get done! It all shows the complexity of the bots more than the fights do. These are machines that took tens or hundreds of hours just to design, and they're so complicated that something is almost guaranteed to go wrong, but it also shows the preparation of the team, who was always prepared to fix whatever issue popped up.
I like how some of the best battle bots ever were a couple of guys in their garage, and this team of super nerds (complement, not insult)
overcomplicated the heck out of it and have an endless list of problems they fight before even getting in the ring, lol
All modern battlebots are overcomplicated.
All OLD battlebots are overcomplicated.
There is no way to simplify brushless drive. All of the Orbitron controls and fancy stuff is done on their laptop, not in the bot.
That's simply what you get when you have FOUR motor controllers in one bot with individual controls for each section, not to mention modularity and durability in the question.
Correction: everyone is a super nerd and these guys just have a REALLY big garage
Like Nick Adams the owner of Wild Thing, now deceased due to blood cancer. RC touring car hobbyist and shop owner supplying, creating and packing many components from his garage at his house. I spent countless weekends in his shop/garage helping out with family, it's a shame he's gone. He was going to sponsor me in 1/12 scale touring when I raced the world champion neck and neck but I was too young at the time and didn't appreciate what opportunities I had considering this was 15 years ago :(
I do miss those old days of the sport sometiumes, just the things cobbled together in a shed for a few hundred quid and being competetive.
Whilst modern heavyweights need tens of thousands to run at a tournament.
The whole "orbit" thing seems like a gimmick, it didn't do a single orbit. That said, it seems to work well.
The arena is not big enough for it to work, especially with the new upper deck.
Circling may not be shown here, but target tracking does seem to be working, which can already be quite helpful given the visibility problems the box sometimes presents.
Great job. Considering the complexity of the robot it’s frankly amazing that you managed to get it working reliably in the ring for both fights with no issues.
Man, all these guys are goin' places. Great teamwork.
The sound it makes when it is in full speed spinning is terrifying enough already. Very cool.
so what would happen if an opponent had big IR lights on top of there bot would that mess with the cameras and screw up the ai tracking?
@chaosleviatho879 I'm just thinking of like what happens if you point your phone camera at like a security camera/Kinect bar with its IR lights and its basically like pointing your camera at a flashlight since the camera sees the light still even if it has a IR filter. But same as you I'm no expert on this hence my curiosity :)
iirc from when I read over the rules, stuff like that probably wouldn't be allowed - I don't think that exact thing is explicitly banned, but there are other camera-interference related things that are.
@@bell2023 Yeah you aren't allowed to interfere with your opponents controls in any way and I'd assume that would count as interfering with their controls to a degree
I'm so thrilled for you guys, can't wait to see what happens in the next fight 🥰

so you're telling me you had all MAIN connections going through a backlight first as a conduit? A cosmetic bs effect failing can unplug your battery. engineers need to go back to basics if a plate pinching a backlight wire can shut the bot down how could it take a hit
