    Length of Class: 17:05
    Tracks
    Networking
Classes that Require a Computer Lab
    Prerequisites
    Setting Up Port Forwarding
    TCP/IP and Subnet Masking
    Understanding SOHO Routers
    Understanding Switches
    Introduction to Networking
    Physical Network Segmentation
    Purpose of Class
This class teaches students why they should set up a separate Computer Lab network on their home network if they will be creating test servers and networks. It also explains the basic concepts such as; Port Forwarding to Multiple Layers of Routers, the Need for Different IP Subnets on the Same LAN, and that Conflicting Server Services can cause odd problems.
    Class Notes
Reasons for a Separate Computer Lab Network-- DNS and DHCP issues, performance problems
Lab Network must be on a different IP Network then other LAN Networks. 192.168.1.x, 192.168.2.x, 192.168.3.x
For access to servers form outside world port forwarding on your ISP Router must be pointed at the Router for your Lab Network
Any $60 Linksys Router can be used to create a lab network.
Lab Network Router External Interface needs to be configured to be on the same network as the ISP Router's Internal Interfaces.

Just started getting into Networking, and it's pretty daunting for someone like me who has virtually no real background with computers let alone the networks they talk to each other through.
But of all the lessons I've dug through on CZcams, Eli, you are hands down the best at explaining these sorts of things in an approachable manner. Thank you for putting these up for everyone, and thanks for giving me the confidence to shoot for certification(s).

Coming back here after so many years just to say thank you. I've been out of work for a while now due to COVID and because I have no equipment I need a quick revision. Now with advance IT skills I can see why your course was such a help. Thank you so much Eli.

Here is my setup for those interested in a virtual environment :
    Design:
INTERNET Your ISP Modem/Router Local LAN ESXi Server
    Step 1. Buy Server Dell
Buy a Dell PowerEdge ‑ T110 II Essential
    www.dell.com/us/business/p/poweredge-t110/pd
be sure to select the Essential configuration - keep default specs - it will cost you about $680.00 (USD)
Buy RAM upgrade to 16GB or 32GB depending on your needs.
Server ships with 8GB Crucial already (either 2x4GB modules or 1x8GB module at no additional cost) I recommend getting 1x 8GB module then ordering another module like it from Crucial site (link below) for a total of 16GB.
    www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/poweredge-t110-ii
Buy an 8GB low-profile 3.0 USB Drive from Amazon
Install drive on the motherboard internally.
Select this drive as the destination hard drive during VMware ESXi installation.
Step 2. Download and Install ESXi 5.x (Trial)
Configure to ESXi host to simulate a DMZ and configure your lab environment accordingly.
    pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-4-esx-vcenter/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.vsphere.server_configclassic.doc_41/esx_server_config/security_for_esx_systems/c_example_creating_a_network_dmz_on_a_single_esx_host.html
Steps to reactivate ESXi 5.x 60-day trial
    1. Go to Licence and put a Free Licence from VMware Portal (optional)
    2. service.sh restart
    3. rm -r /etc/vmware/license.cfg
    4. cp /etc/vmware/.#license.cfg /etc/vmware/license.cfg
    5. /etc/init.d/vpxa restart
    6. service.sh restart

he meant, he himself has a video explaining what that is, which is a 15-20 minute concept - if explained in this video, would deviate us from learning the concept he's trying to teach. It's just that some half-wit dumb as#es with a shorter attention span may not be able to follow if the class deviates into too many concepts and complain in the comments portraying how incompetent and clueless they are to just patiently listen to a video to understand it, despite appreciating the effort he put in, while the same will be taught with not even half the quality of how he does for ridiculously high fee.

EDIT: Sorry Jason was completely talking out of my ass before; basically as long as you have your static routes predefined on your router and, as Eli mentioned in the video, have the communicating ports on the same prefix your networks should be able to communicate. Unfortunately you will not be able to do this with the router you are using.

Unfortunately, no consumer based routers I know of have definable routing features that I know of. If you have a lot of old hardware lying around check if you have any which are compatible with DD-WRT, at minimum you can define routes from LAN to WAN ports. Alternatively if you have computer parts lying around a good way to get into is is to put together a computer with several NIC's and install linux or even dedicated router distro's. Its a good start to get familiar with it

Please don't confuse "router" with NAT. A pure router has no "port forwarding" and need not even contain a firewall,I own several boxes that come into that catagory. To clarify I tend to use "router" and "NAT router" as two distinct terms when talking about networks.

  • @NullsetComputerCo

Trying to wrap my head around this. Quick questions. So if the DNS and DHCP servers of all 3 routers are enabled does that mean that each DNS and DHCP server on each of the 3 routers are in 3 different subnets? And if this is the case does a DHCP server of a router ABOVE another router treat the router below it exactly the same as it would a client computer the way in which it assigns it an IP Address, such as the way (i believe the external address)WAN1 IP: is 10.247.248.122 in the video at 10:46.

Great teacher TBH. Probably the most important step of his teaching is that he reviews and summarizes at the end to make sure the entire topic is clear.
Some "teachers" are experts at what they do, but are awful at breaking things down because they assume you will pick it up quickly. To an instructor that already knows the subject matter, it may seem to be something that should be easily understood because they are already very familiar with it. Knowing your students' level of expertise and breaking it down in the correct way is extremely important when teaching.

Just found your channel! I love it. Not sure why I didn't discover it earlier. Is that a Cintiq behind you? You do graphics too?

Now be fancy and instead of static routing (which is what you will need if you go 3 levels deep like this guy) instead use an IGP....OSPF....do it like a boss...
