I got a Z50 in elementary school, been hooked ever since. My carb is a 655A, more roundish. There is a video that goes through the different carb configurations by year, FYI. I paid for Matt's video series on this bike, WELL worth the money!!!
In 1969 I got a Z50 when I was 13 y/o for Christmas. My Dad brought it home on Christmas Eve. It was the beginning of my addiction to motorcycles. Went on to race Moto-X, Hare Scrambles and Enduro's. The Z50 was my gateway drug and I still have it!!!!!! It's been stored in my climate controlled crawl space since 1986 when I bought this house. Watched the entire video. What memories that brought back. Thanks for posting Matt!! For those that want a shorter version, you could take out short clips of each step and edit them together at the end for a quick step by step review. If there were questions then they could go back for the detailed version. JMHO. Thumbs up.
Thanks so much for a fantastic video. I gave the carb on my z50 a good clean today after hard starting and bogging yesterday. I stumbled on a few things doing, checked the issues against your video (didn't realise there was a specific way to insert the throttle needle until it reved crazy high after startting it!) and it sorted me out. Thanks!
Im Danish. We dont have these here. However: I found one on ebay(Germany). Red minitrail, 1971. "Imported from ontario via a John Deer dealer" I Drove down to get it at a good price and I just cleaned it up and got it running again.
Thanks for the video. I have a 1968 Honda Mini Trial. That was the first year with this model. It came with white handle grips, no key and no head light. I got the carb rebuild kit and this video will help a great deal.
I used to have one of these. It was my first motorcycle. My father sold it because he was scared for me plus it probably had the same issue, it wouldn't start. Great video. Thanks for inspiring us out here in you tube land.
I bought mine from my friend when I was 12 in 1970. I have keep my bike all these years stored in my garage. It still runs OK but I know after the carb rebuilt it will run great.
+kazoocorral Yes, I have a ultrasonic cleaner. I also have a soda blast cabinet that works awesome. Here is my whole setup: www.howtomotorcyclerepair.com/carburetorrebuilding/
+MatthewMCRepair nice and easy little set up.. Like the blast cabinet with Soda blast... can you use other mediums in that cabinet too or are you using it for the soda blast only to not have any cross contamination of blast mediums.
Great video Matt, i have a 69 z50r and the throttle needle is stuck after unthreading in cylinder on the carb. i have sprayed carb cleaner on it. Still stuck, any ideas.? thank you in advance.
Hey Matt, great video. Rebuilt the carb and its not firing. With some starter fluid it fires once or twice then nothing. Gas is getting to the carb. Any suggestions?
Awesome video !! i need your help , i am working in Indian bike TVS XL super HD a small engine , just rebuild it but when i complete everything , the bike turning on good but while driving and accelerating engine turns off, any help !!
Great video. I have a 69 with no key I was able to start it. Just wondering if you knew the key position or if yours is able to run with out a key. I was thinking that the key slot was worn out that's why it could run with out the key. I saw that you moved the key once it was running. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
The key is basically a kill switch. When not in the circuit, the bike will start and run without a key. Without the key, you need to create a short or cut the fuel to stop the motor. Taking a look at the wiring diagram helped a lot with this.
Just got a 1968 z50, no element in the air cleaner. Idles fine but under load cuts out. Will the air flow increase cause this? I’m ordering the little round air filter today that goes inside the housing. Thanks and great video. Also can you tune the carb without the actual filter element? Or will it run different with the element in?
The parts cleaner your using I think says that you can only soak parts in it for 3 hours. I have the same stuff in my parts washer and I wrecked a carb just like that and a few years newer z50 carb. I had then sitting for a week. The finish was ripped off and it started to eat away at the aluminum. Had to replace the one that's worth more and more expensive. Just for future experiences. Maybe I'm wrong on the 3 hour thing but read the can so you don't mess up someone else's carb.
I agree. You can't leave it in there too long. The chem dip I have states 15min, however, on nasty carbs I do leave them in longer to get them to clean up.
I noticed when you leaned the pilot air screw it didn't stumble and you went back to 2 turns out. Why did it not stumble when you kept backing the screw out?
Bonjour à vous je suis de France je cherche à commander des joints de carbu pour un monkey Z 50a 1972 Je ne trouve rien si vous pouvez me conseiller merci à vous bonne journée
@@HTMR we rebuilt it with the help of video. Much appreciated! But I was just asking in case we couldn’t figure it out. Not very mechanically inclined. Lol. But in the future Is there a carb you would recommend?
I have the same bike and I am restoring it and the throttle is all messed up, can you make a video or show me to a place where I can learn how to fix it? thanks
Just completed a carb rebuild kit on my K1. Bike was running great prior to the gas going bad from not putting Stabil in one winter. Went to start it and it was instantly over revving. It seems that the throttle slide going into the carb isn't closing completely. It's lined up properly so the idle screw will catch on the little notch, and it's re-installed per the clymer shop manual. Any thoughts on why the slide won't go down? I even disconnected the throttle cable just to see if the needle and slide would go down more and if doesn't. I'm completely stumped!
I recently acquired a 1980 Honda CM200T. It came with a knock off chinese carb so I got an exact fit OEM carb off of ebay and I am now in the process of rebuilding. I have a question that I cant seem to find a straight forward answer to. The pilot jet in the original carb in the "pressed in" type. I have read a lot of forums and people seem to have been able to remove them to clean them with vice grips and tapping them back in when finished. I cant seem to find any videos or more in depth details about this. Any tips or tricks that you have for these pressed in pilot jets? Thanks in advance!
Do you know how to instal the right front fork rubber boot. The brake is installed on that side and I can't get the rubber boot over where the brake bracket is welded to the front fork.
I have a video you should check out called "How-To: Cure that BOG O-Ring Mod YZF FCR". In addition to the o ring mod, put a smaller leak jet into it, like 50-60 in size.
can i get a that piece that is loaded with the throttle spring on the carb ? just got my z50r 99 and the carb was pulled out already and someone must have lost it...
Hey I need some help I have a 84 z50r runs great but the idle is off if u rev it up and I idles at a mid rev and slowly comes back down throttle cable is good i had to re do the whole motor over the valves we're stuck on abit but after all the still the revs
+MatthewMCRepair yea sortable like from high rev to mid rev it drops normal but for mid rev to idle it takes a bit to come to idle so if ur driving it it sticks but the slider is going going down in the carb and it doesn't feel sticky
+insane_ivtec Assuming that the throttle slide is not the issue, a lean condition can cause that. Check for a dirty carb and vacuum leaks. You can do a quick test by turning the choke partially on and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then it is lean.
@@HTMR You etched the hell out of that carb and parts using that parts dip, You used a center punch to remove the float, A vise to remove a jet and you should really know the correct names for the parts... just to name a few.

+MatthewMCRepair What were the standard "turns out" for the idle air and pilot air screws? I heard 1.5 for the pilot, but what for the other screw?
+Hobie16Sailor There really isn't a baseline setting for idle screw. Just set it so slide is barely cracked open and you can see some light past it.

Oh and twisting the throttle makes no change in rpm
Did you install the slide correctly? Remove air filter/box and make sure slide is all the way down and moves when you twist throttle.
Should it completely occlude the passage?
It should be 95% closed at idle.
