36 men have tried and 33 have failed. What happened to the 3 men who made it the farthest? Here’s the untold truth about the Alcatraz escape!
    9 - Background on Alcatraz
The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was a maximum-security federal prison on Alcatraz Island, around one and a quarter miles off the coast of San Francisco. Given its high security and the island's location in the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz was believed to be escape-proof and America's strongest prison. Alcatraz was used to hold prisoners who caused trouble at other federal prisons. It housed roughly fifteen hundred federal inmates, including some of America's most infamous criminals. Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelly are some examples. The three-story cellhouse had four main cell blocks, A-block through D-block, right in the center. The warden's office and visitation room were on one end of the building. The dining hall and kitchen areas were on the other side, along with the exercise yard. The prison cells typically measured 9 feet by 5 feet and 7 feet high. Each prisoner had their own cell, but they were primitive and lacked privacy. They were only outfitted with the bare necessities. Prisoners followed a strict daily routine and their whereabouts were known at all times. To give you an idea of how closely they checked on prisoners, a total of 13 official counts were made every 24 hours! Escape seemed almost impossible! Despite the odds, from 1934 until the prison was closed in 1963, 36 men tried 14 separate escapes. Nearly all were caught or didn’t survive the attempt. However, the fate of three particular inmates remains a mystery to this day!
    8 - The Escapees
Inmates Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin were the prisoners who attempted the infamous 1962 prison break out of Alcatraz! Frank Lee Morris was orphaned at age 11 and spent most of his childhood in foster homes. He was convicted of his first crime at age 13, and by his late teens he had been arrested for crimes such as armed robbery! However, even with his criminal past, Morris was in the 98th percentile in intelligence. Supposedly he had an IQ of 133. Genius level is considered 140 and above. Escaping from Alcatraz actually wasn’t his first escape! He escaped from the Louisiana State Penitentiary while serving time for bank robbery. He was caught again a year later sent to Alcatraz in January 1960. The Anglin brothers, John and Clarence, were born into a family of thirteen children in Georgia. The brothers began robbing banks and other businesses as a team in the early 1950s. They targeted places that were closed, to ensure that no one got injured. They claimed that they used a weapon only once, during a bank heist, with a toy gun. By the 1960s, both received sentences that brought them to Alcatraz. But how did the brothers and Frank Morris come together? They all had served time together at the United States Penitentiary in Atlanta! After repeated failed attempts to escape from the Atlanta facility, the brothers were transferred to Alcatraz. A fourth guy, Allen West, was also involved although he didn’t leave Alcatraz with the trio. West was serving his second term in Alcatraz. He knew John Anglin from prison time together in Florida. The escape plan started to take shape in December of 1961, beginning with a collection of several old saw blades that West allegedly found in one of the utility corridors while cleaning. And that’s why he was pulled into the escape. In later interviews, West would take credit for masterminding the whole thing!
    7 - The Plan
While in Alcatraz, inmate Clarence Carnes became friends with Morris and told him about the access tunnel behind their cells. Morris used this information to develop the overall escape plan. They then all carefully planned the escape for eight months, leaving nothing to coincidence. Over the next six months, the men widened the ventilation ducts beneath their sinks using the saw blades discovered by West. They also used metal spoons smuggled in from the dining hall. Amazingly enough, they also made an electric drill improvised from the motor of a vacuum cleaner! They hid the noise of their work with the louder noise of Morris playing his accordion during music hour. That was in addition to all the noise of instruments during music hour! Yup, that’s right, Alcatraz had a music hour.

You’d be surprised on what actually happens in prison. In prison, people do use whatever resources they can get their hands on, and turn it into something else. My Uncle has been in many maximum security prisons, and the amount of cocaine usage and deals he had seen completely shocked him! I remember when he was release he had actually shown me many of the things he made/taught himself to do in prison, and I was actually so amazed by it.
There’s definitely other people involved with the case, security guards being one of them. No matter what officials say, jails are never 100% secured or safe.

Fascinating story, no matter how many documentaries I watch I never tire of watching about this great escape (pun intended) although sadly I strongly believe despite actually getting off the island which was phenomenal I do believe they drowned. The inflatable raft had no means testing whatsoever there must of been some miniscule leaks which a makeshift raft certainly would have. Nevertheless I love the story of pure ingenuity. (supplementary) I'm amazed at the number of replies am receiving on this topic of which I thank everyone. Look, these three men where no angels but they weren't exactly mass murderers either just thieves, I'm on the side of the prisoners in all this, but let's all admit one thing as I've wrote earlier. They'd be extremely lucky to have crossed a turbulent bay to land with a raft filled with air that was no where near any kind of water until that actual night of the escape. And we all know if there even the most microscopic hole, tear, or even and a weak part of the glueing then when you consider the weight of these three men putting extreme pressure on this inflatable makeshift raft then they where doomed. I would love to believe they made land and all three lived out their lives in complete anonymity. But that's another problem I have, and another reason I believe they didn't make it. Theses guys where incredibly bright obviously, especially Frank Morris. But, had they let's say succeeded and are now maybe dead or maybe one or all three are still alive? Where talking in terms of 85+ years of age. Now, being that age surely the urge and the absolute irresistible desire would be if one of them still lives would be to just get a top journalist a top investigor and say here! I'm Frank Morris and I beat Americas supposedly inescapable prison called alcatraz, and by doing that wouldn't we all agree the enormous triumphalism and joy Mr Frank Morris would feel and millions of people around the world including me! They surely would have nothing to lose in their final weeks of life at a very old age to basically stick two fingers up to the authorities and at the same time stick to thumbs of to the millions of people who totally admire what they achieved. Why not, why the complete disappearance! Forget the conspiracies, The alleged photos, the anecdotal stories, No one has heard from these men since June 1963! I'd love the replies to keep coming, and particularly I'd love to hear your opinion on especially when these guys on their death beds having lived out long lives with nothing to lose, and don't forget the financial aspect too, why the silence for over 50 +years? I'd like your opinion on that particular thing please. Lastly I still believe they drowned, and i still unfortunately believe there at the bottom of the ocean obviously their bodies aren't anymore but some sort of paraphernalia is!💓

But I also think this theory that they survived is hard to get evidence for. Keep in mind this was many years ago, they’re most likely dead. The fact that they are dead actually makes the theory I’m thinking of impossible to actually prove with 100% true-full evidence. But their plan actually seemed pretty intelligent and seems some what possible, they know how to work the plan properly I’m guessing that they survived.

I'm so annoyed that the FBI declined the offer on the letter. It makes no sense, even if it isn't John Anglin and it's just some random person making a joke, its still worth a shot. I hope they survived, none of them deserved death and its cruel and unfair that they would probably still be sent to prison if they all came forward now. They have done their time, hiding, not being able to receive healthcare or get a job for 60 years.

Prison guards didn't live on the island. Morris and 2 Anglin brothers hitched a tow rope to the boat that ferried guards to Frisco after the afternoon shift ended. Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson was released in summer of '62. He picked up the 3 escapees at about the midway point between Alcatraz and Frisco with a motor boat. Remember, the FBI found their raft, but not their bodies. They were PROS....they worked out all these details ahead of time! I believe the Anglins mother DID get Xmas and birthday cards from Brazil!

    Alcatraz Prison Escape
Alcatraz was a prison on an island off of San Francisco bay. Alcatraz was the toughest prison in America containing the toughest prisoners in America. It was surrounded by freezing temperatures, strong ocean currents, and deadly sharks. It would be incredibly hard to escape this island, but Clarence Anglin, John Anglin and Frank Morris accomplished that incredibly hard task.
My name is Frank Morris and I am extremely smart. According to Answers.com I had an IQ of 133, but I used my high intelligence for escapes at other prisons, which got me into Alcatraz. I was born on September 1, 1926 in Washington D.C. I was orphaned at age 11, and committed my first crime at the age of 13. Whilst still at Alcatraz, I met a person who told me about the access to the corridor from the ventilation vents, so this is when I started planning my escape. It took months of planning, but it would all be worth it, I couldn't wait to feel the ocean breeze on my face.
June 12th, 1962, best day of my life, the day it happened. We worked, and worked, and worked. It was hard work but we gradually widened the ventilation air duct. We used A drill made from a broken vacuum motor. We used saw blades from the prison ground, and we used spoons stolen from the mess hall to widen the vents. It was then, we realized, the guards would notice we were missing. We devised a plan to make paper mache heads that looked just like us to fool the guards into thinking we were still sleeping. We made the paper mache heads out of cement, that we made with soap and toilet paper. This served as the skin. The skin was soon painted flesh color, which we found in the prison art kit. Real hair from the barber shop was used. This fooled the guards, until they went to wake us up, and found out they were fake, but after they figured this out, we were already floating away on our raft made from raincoats. They never figured out if I was dead or alive, well, they never recovered the body, so there's no way they could know. Several other people tried to escape, but they didn't succeed. Wikipedia even recorded that they all died. They were not as smart as me though, and they didn't plan as thoroughly as we did.
Legend has it, we all survived the escape, and yes, this is true. Cbsnews did a report on John Anglin’s escape letter. The letter read, "My name is John Anglin. I escaped from Alcatraz in June 1962 with my brother Clarence and Frank Morris. I'm 83 years old and in bad shape. I have cancer. Yes we all made it that night but barely!" Listen, before you say he's dumb for sending that letter, Alcatraz was shut down in 1963, just one year after the escape, plus John was in critical condition, and at that point, he probably knew he was going to die. Therefore, he is the reason so many people now know, that the escape was a success. Although he's probably dead now. 83 years old, and a bad case of cancer. I don't need to be a medical professionalist to know that's unhealthy. Anyway, we have come to the conclusion he’s probably dead, but that's another mystery worth solving I guess.
Here is my 5th grade essay I wrote on Alcatraz after I visited it.

Fun Fact: My dad used to work at a haunted house that used to be one of Al Capone’s hideouts. It’s located near Couderay Wi. He doesn’t work there anymore because it was closed down for some reason.

I went to Alcatraz San Fransico last year. And we went into the the 3 brothers cells it was SICK! And we got HEAPS! Of souvenirs. It was GREAT I loved it so MUCH! And I got a lenticular card. So you tilt the card it will show the 3 brothers and you tilt it the other way and you can see the face moulds. And it was so unbelievable how they escaped Alcatraz. I really did enjoy it. And also really miss Alcatraz allot. And I'm going back to America this year after this Covid-19 Crap is over.....hopefully.
    Well, Yours Sincerely Sam Toucan.

Those 3 men are probably watching this if they are still alive, and laughing about it while drinking a glass of wine somewhere out there 🤣🤣🤣

the video and content was great, but i do have one advice: the number transitions might be dizzying for some people (me included!) maybe make a transition that does not glitch and use neon colours at the same time? other than that, love the video!
