Kelly is in the arms of our Savior now. He used his gifts to bless us and give glory to Jesus. It will be wonderful to meet him one day, but like his songs speak, he's always pointing to God's grace.
so beautiful !!! Kelly Joe was a pure artist, a wonderful poet and a fantastic musician !!!
Beautiful man. I was fortunate enough to be a student of his in the late 80s. Such a humble and kind man. And he can shred when needed!
I did not know of his passing. He will be back because the angels cry when he plays. They cry cause he is needed here. Such a gentle, kind soft spoken talented person. God's rest in peace one day finds us all & brings us all back home.🌹
KJP is part of the pantheon of Folk Gods along with Greg Brown, Chris Whitley and Jeffrey Foucault. (amongst others) but his uniqueness sets him apart as a true troubadour of originality and depth. Long live kjp!
Thanks for mentioning Greg Brown. What a treasure...
My first time seeing KJP, was a wonderful accident. Went to a small multi-day fest primarily to see Chris Smither, only to learn that he had performed the previous day. Initially I was pretty pissed off. I had heard/read KJP’s name, but knew nothing else about him. Inside of thirty seconds I, along with everyone else, initiated or otherwise, sat spellbound by his depth and talent…which I would describe as “singular”. Such a tremendous loss.
Kelly Joe Phelps is a spiritual paragon! My goodness he has harnessed the most captivating path to a spiritual closeness to God that I have ever witnessed. I miss him so much. It melts my heart when I can’t discover what his heart is saying, more recently, during these distressed uncertain times. His music is a beacon for me! He answers a lot of questions..............Man, KJP, if you can see this post......please let me hear more!! I implore!
I totally agree
He is beyond anything I’ve ever herd on this level
:(
I couldn't have said it better myself. I am deeply grieving his departure from this plane.

RIP Kelly Joe, what a gift he shared with us
So sad- I didn't know of him until his passing - just love this music.
Exactly. It's hard that he's gone though.
for god sake come back kelly

God Don't Never Change.

Wow, great voice and sound even through this recording device. Listening to him live must be amazing.
It was - you could hear a pin drop !
Used to hear Kelly Joe at the long-defunct Cafe Lena on Hawthorne in Portland, way back when he was still working out the material for Lead Me On. He was brilliant then, and it's great to see where he's come to over the years. Thanks for posting!
ME TOO! They had the most AMAZING stuffed french toast! We used to go almost every weekend and my little girl would get down and dance while he played.
Yes. I used to to have to convince people to come to that Lena Sunday brunch. I rolled tape on many of those. He'd be going into a beautiful solo and the door bell would sound,
door squeak, phone ring and dishwasher run. That was still the best place to see him. Coffee, pancakes with fruit and KJP. #iwannagothere It was great to hear the evolution of the songs. #sailthejordan #markingstoneblues
I would listen to him at Cafe Lena as well. He blew my mind. I had his CD from working in radio. I had not idea that I would have a chance to hear him in Portland after working in radio in Rochester, NY. It was the best thing that I could have asked for.
To extend on this comment, I was driving across the country. I spent a long time on the road, listening to KJP and Willie Porter, and Lyle Lovett. Every mile was worth the time. I just did not have enough money for gas some times.
I used to live at 16th and Belmont in the 90's. Would walk over to Cafe Lena to check out KJP doing his thing. Amazing times in Stumptown...
Thank you, Kelly Joe Phelps. It means the world to me.
That's a heck of a rendition of "Hellhound o My Trail."
I miss you my friend.
Great concert, thanks for posting
okay thank you for the comment , he is very good Kelly Joe Phelps
Carola Flipp thanks for posting this! I've been into Kelly Jo for 20yrs and only love his music more with time! Check out Blind Willie Johnson...you will see some of where Kelly got some of his incredible picking style. He does a cover of Blind Willie called God Don't Never Change. Enjoy!!!
Carola Flipp ah, pride is a sin! Instead of trying to show off my (supposed) knowledge of the blues I should have listened to this concert first and would have heard him give Blind Willie Johnson his props!! Peace from the USA
@@davidkleine2265 hello from France ;)) , since you seem to have a good knowledge of the blues guitar players maybe you know others players like KJP ? mixing picking and slide in a modern way ? thx a lot
Great performance from KFJ! I just wish the boring guy stomping his foot couldn't be heard ☺
It's KJP stomping. You can hear it/see it on most of his live videos
@@JonahSonner I first thought so as well, but you can tell during the "goodbye to sorrow" song, that the sound goes on as KJP stops moving his legs (around 14 min). You can also sometimes see him stomp the beat but you can't hear it.
By the way, great if not greatest version of this song, in my opinion.
Anyone know what he's tuned to?
Usually his resonator is Open G. I would be surprised if it was anything else. By this time, I think he mostly played his "normal" acoustics in Standard tuning.
His lap slides are open d. That looks like standard tuning to me, at least the first song or two. He used to be partial to CGCGCF. Like open c but the lone third (e) tuned up. I learned some of his stuff off of tap the red can world wind in open g but I'm unconvinced that that's how he played it.
DGDGBD (open G)
