I am so lucky to have grown up in the 80's. Loved this movie and the 4k was amazing! Great job Paramount!
I just bought this 4K, this was the first time I saw dragonslayer since the theatre when it first came out. I do remember not being so engaged in the story when I saw it in the theatre, that was probably the first and only time I felt like that in the theatre, I couldn’t wait for the movie to be over at the time. These days I do feel differently, I enjoy every movie in my home theatre. I can’t believe it’s been over 40 years since I saw it in the theatre, seems like yesterday.
Pulled this out on DVD when COVID shut down happening in 2020. A fantastic film.
Agreed. It's aged well and it's one of the better fantasy film's from the 80's.
Fun fact: "Dragonslayer" is one of 2 films that were co-productions between Paramount and Walt Disney Pictures. The other film was Robin Williams' "Popeye" (1980). Interesting to note that while Paramount holds the United States film rights, outside of the U.S. Disney holds the film rights. Very underrated 80's fantasy film and can't wait to watch it on 4K Ultra HD! :)
I’m glad the Blu-ray was available in the states then because I won’t give the Rodent House my money.
Weird that it’s not on Disney Plus here in Canada if Disney holds the film rights outside the US.
"Dragonslayer" is a favorite film from my childhood. I was 6 when it came out and it was the 2nd film that I saw in a theater shortly after "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Paramount did a terrific job on the 4K transfer
Saw this movie when it was first released in the theater. It became and still remains one of my top five favorite films of all time. This and Reign of Fire are by far the best two dragon movies ever.
I discovered this movie on HBO back in the mid-80s and loved it. It's still my favorite dragon movie to this day. I think it's great they're releasing it on 4K.
Enter the Dragon is still the greatest Dragon movie ever made.

So you're not a fantasy guy? O.K. to me this is the best dragon movie. I first saw it on Venezuelan VHS as El Verdugo De Dragones and I was enthralled. And I'm more a horror fan and I still liked it! Good review and cool video Ken!👉😃👈
This was on HBO non-stop as a kid. It still holds up. The restoration is beautiful.
Pre-ordered it but Amazon still hasn't shipped my copy :(

Great review Ken! I was lucky enough to see this movie as a teenager in the 80's, so as you can imagine I love it. I was actually surprised it was getting a 4k. I was really glad this was a Great release given Paramount's hit or miss releases of late. Apparently a lot of the steel books are missing the digital code but mine had it. So that's something to be aware of. Thanks again Ken!
I saw this in the theater in 1981 and have been wanting to see them do a blu-ray / 4k release for awhile now. I bought my copy on 4K, just waiting to find time to watch it.
An absolute fantasy classic with some of the most incredible dragon effects that still hold up today. Watched growing up in the 80s and great to see the 4K transfer had such care taken in producing.

I can't even imagine having never seen "Dragonslayer". It's one of the top 5 best fantasy films of the 80's. I couldn't count how many times I've seen it.
I was just a little kid when Dragonslayer was playing at the drive in theater back in the day. Movie was awesome for a fantasy movie and it still is. Just recently i bought the new 4K blu ray for the movie from Walmart and i bought it because of the bonus features behind the scenes stuff which is more important in my opinion.
The effects is still scarier than most of today's computer generated, and Vermithrax still has the coolest name in cinematic dragon history.
I got this steelbook at Best Buy as it was the last one left, and was actually my first time seeing it. The 4k transfer is done very well and shocking for a film that came all the way out in 81'. The film itself was very passionate and extremely ambitious, and definitely had a lot of love put into it. The dragon special effects were mind blowing for the time! It's definitely is a slow burn and some aspects that sort of flew over my head, but I agree that it could have been more engaging within the characters, moreso like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, or Willow.
Watched dragon heart the other day for the first time in like 20 years. It actually held up really well for me.

This release was so unexpected and made me so happy with the job Paramount did with restoring it. Can’t believe we got a 4K release of Freeway last year and a 4K release of Dragonslayer this year before getting a 4K release of Aliens but I’ll take it.
We'll take all we can get at this point. This needs to be the standard for Paramount going forward.
Aliens is owned by the Rodent House and all James Cameron has cares about is Avatar for years. Two major reasons why you haven’t seen that get a restoration/release.

But that's my opinion, and I'm biased as an '80s kid and not a '90s kid. I'm just saying I'd rather watch one than the other. My only complaint is that there's no Blu-ray for this as well.
My friend saw Dragonheart in theaters, and said it was the best dragon movie ever. I showed him Dragonslayer later, and smugly watched him change his mind.

Dragonslayer is THE definitive movie when it comes to dragons portrayed in cinema. This was exemplified when Vermithrax was mentioned in the first season of Game of Thrones.
Got the steel book
Bought the Steelbook and all I can say is that Paramount put a great effort restoring this one. The picture is great but the real winner is the audio, if you have a six channel set up at least this soundtrack is a BEAST.
Love all your content! You need to get a true Atmos setup. You are REALLY missing out on EVERY movie you watch. Atmos soundbars are better than nothing but just barely. Audio is 60% (or more) of a movie.

I have 2 of the Tyrion shirt, one black w/gold and the other red w/black lettering and a poster with him seated and the quote above him. I picked this up in the steel, probably watch it tomorrow. Slightly annoyed at the "missing" blu though.
Dragonslayer has the best dragon put to film to date. No Scottish or English voice actors, no witty banter. Just a force of nature that needs dealt with.

Absolutely loved this movie, but this disc is a frustration for me. Loved the first 90%, but the climax is lathered in so much DNR, I’m assuming to make the effects look more modern… ?
I just pray it gets released here in Europe.

I got the 4K Steel book release and it's fantastic! There's one issue and I was wondering if you or anyone else had this: except for the commentary ALL the other special features are unwatchable. It appears as "digital snow" with black/white/colored dots. I purchased it through Amazon and they'll probably only give me a refund if I mail it back. I'm hesitant because I received this steel book in perfect condition. The last time I ordered a steel book was Lawrence of Arabia in 4k and it came mangled. Does Paramount exchange disks only?
Disregard. For what ever reason, the Extras now play. Probably a micro piece of dirt interfered.

I don’t think it’s cool you advising people not to pick up a movie because you don’t personally like it. Feel free to send me your copy of The Core. I will appreciate it where you cannot. Otherwise. I’ll buy it in spite of your admonition that we don’t.
This movie was played heavily on network TV (or was it HBO?) in the 80s. That’s where I discovered it. I think it’s absolutely a big deal that there’s no Blu-ray copy included with the 4K. Seeing the release in person, I went from favoring the steelbook to favoring the slipcover. I don’t like the art on the steelbook at all in person. The slip is beautiful. Regardless, passing in the 4K due to the absent Blu-ray copy.
So glad to finally get this, one of the greatest dragon movies and one of the greatest movies from my childhood finally in restored high def! Big upgrade from the horrible DVD.
