Imagine being 15, being fed a diet of 80’s synth pop. Then this exploding into your life! It never gets old.

That would have been great, for me I didn't get to have this explode in my life and was stuck with the synths!

Always said the opening lines of Red Army Blues, are amongst the best opening lines of any song.
This song has been with me for 35 years, still so strong.
Any one else who knows the song start humming A Pagan Place, as soon as it finished.

Two great songs by two very underrated artist some little gems from Scotland that even some Scots let them slip under the radar.

Shawn and Trey, The facts you research and share are interesting fo the story behind the song. The first song is an epic intense song vocally, lyrically and musically. Excellent guitar, great sax and instrumentation like you said Trey. Awesome little History lesson Shawn you told of Russia about war that tok a lot of people. It is a powerful song with a message. The second song also has an intense war story that you guys told setting up the song.Your research pays off to help understand the meaning of the lyrics. Shawn, being a History Teacher you share knowledge that is important. The second song is also an epic. Beautiful guitar on the intro and throughout. The bass picks up the tempo for a while., then the song continues at a steady pace. This is a tough choice for a winner. The first song has vocals, guitar, sax, the second song is quieter and haunting with nice guitar. You both chose a different song as the winner. I think I will choose the second song as the winner. Powerful historic song battle Joseph.

@@ReactionsToTheClassics Yes, I like this one. Powerful dramatic songs, and we even get a History lesson by Shawn, since you were a History Teacher. That's cool.

What a great battle. Very well put together. I was very familiar with The Waterboys tune but didn't know the Al Stewart's one. Very interesting lyrics

Never heard the Waterboys song -- I came here because of my love of Al Stewart. RTM is my favorite of his songs. The Waterboys song is fabulous! The sax is so yearning and aching, and the story, very much like Al's story, is just as pained, and the screeching guitars get across the same pain. What a great match-up.

Shout out to Red Army Blues but it is Roads To Moscow for me. Al Stewart is a one helluva storyteller and he captures historical events like no other.

I fear the Waterboys slipped past a lot of people. Mike Scott is an excellent songwriter in the Van Morrison tradition.

Been a longtime Al fan, but The Waterboys had passed me by until the top 10 of them you guys did so Al wins for me by default, but if I was coming to both tracks cold I think it might be a harder choice - very glad to have an excuse to bring historian Shawn to the fore in any case!
