Awesome that those who never considered the G29 Z4 because it didn’t offer a stick, will now have the option. The Z4 M40i is a wonderful GT roadster, have had mine since last year and love it.
I bought a M40i Z4 last year. Must admit I’m a little bummed that I don’t have a stick…. Full PPF and depreciation, don’t want to take the hit to trade it in, but of course the year after I bought they come out with it.
You just have to do more bmw rewiew mate. I have been so impressed of all the detail and things You are talking about in this video. I think it your background driving a lot of bmw on the race track , but also so many other things You are talking technical stuff like the M differensiel and springs and steering, trottle. I used to have a fiat 124 spider. Sounds similar but with more power. Best road in north America I found for that car was hwy 1, legett to ft.Brag Ca. I live in sk Canada. Ran it from Mexican border to prince rupert BC over 5 trips. That’s what roadsters excel at. Your review makes me want the bmw version:). You nailed what those cars are for. 124 spider is a ball for the money
Perhaps you might have been able to calculate the mpg or found the screen detailing it , if you hadn't driven thru the Lincoln Tunnel with the top down...

Getting one later this year. Really don’t understand why this is not selling more. Its one of the most beautiful bmw in production, fun to drive and at a not to crazy price. And yet somehow this is a old person’s car? Why?
I feel like the automatic-only decision for the first few model years really limited the car (for sure it killed any interest I had). In manual form it is quite capable and compelling. I suspect this will go down as one of the last great BMW sports cars when it ends production in a year or two.
Im in the UK I own a Z4 m40i with auto transmission, I'll be interested to know when this car has been avaliable for a year how many manuals are sold compared to autos. Personally i don't see the point of this car in manual, its not a hardcore track focused car it's a luxurious relatively soft car for cruising around with the top down, you said as much when talking about the steering feel . If you want track focused car get the Porsche Boxster GTS but be prepared to pay more. Nice review on the manual version
@bmwblog oh I understand but IMO, there are far superior more focused manual cars Alfa, Lotus and Porsche. Again as much as i love my Z4 if I'd have wanted a manual more focused car I'd have got one of the above not a Z4
@@markrhoden68Funny…. Porsche has gone almost all PDK chasing that few tenths on track. IMO, manual is for weekend blasts in the mountains. Do any kind of track driving? Go AT/DCT.
Mx5 is a super fun car! I ended up with a Z4 because my wife absolutely hated the floor in the passenger seat in the Mx5, but it’s an outstanding bargain for fun per dollar and a great car
I had the 1.5 MX-5 and it's the best car I've ever owned. I've had much quicker cars but everything else is less fun. Even ambling along at 40mph puts a smile on the face.
I have a 25 year old Miata…original owner…use it as a weekend car. It is the most fun, balanced and analog experience! We’ll never get rid of it. However, if I could have 2 convertibles, this would be #2. That BMW straight 6 + a manual is about to be a thing of the past. Great review!!
I own/owned a Cayman GTS, Z4-M40i, and ND2 Miata, and the Miata is by far the most fun and engaging to drive. But it's not in the same class as the BMW and especially the Porsche. The weakest points of the Miata vs. the other two are the interior (cheap, plasticky) and the engine (unremarkable). It's actually fast if you drive it like you mean it, but in normal driving it lacks the torque and character of the other two cars, especially the BMW which has ample power and torque across the range. Take an on-ramp in 3rd gear and step on the gas in the Miata and you just get some noise, whereas the BMW will lunge and pull very strongly. The Miata has an economy car engine and it shows. I feel like the car would be so much better if it had a bespoke engine worthy of the rest of the car.
Wowww I gotta drive one then I have a civic si coupe 20’ nd its tough to say id enjoy the mx5 as much except prob spinning it ad pushing it harder . But I will say the si has more fun low end torque nd a fun turbo lag but the mx5 has way more ability to rev it out nd u can row the gears with power more it seems like to me
You would think they would have spent the money to redesign the digital dash for the manual. Something retro or a big analog-looking tach in the center. BMW has always been on the struggle bus, which is clearly wrong with its design elements.
@@carcosaterp3393 A lot of folks think it looks blocky, like it's made of Legos, especially in the baby blue color that was used for all the press cars. I thought it was pretty funny that so many people had the same exact reaction. I am OK with the front end and the side profile is fantastic, but the back end looks awkward to me and there isn't a whole lot of continuity to the design. I used to think my F87 M2 Comp was a bit ungainly but it looks so much more cohesive.
@@Billywoo12 There is more to the changes than that. No manufacturer takes the time to talk about all the little differences. BMW clearly said they changed enough to make it feel different than the M2 or the Supra, it is its own thing. If by saying it's essentially the same because it's made by BMW, we already know that.
This thing has one of the most isolated shifter I’ve ever driven. While I don’t keep my hand on the shifter, I doubt he’ll wear out the shift linkage much sooner.
As you mentioned the 6 Speed Manual is “kinda” M. Not it’s either a M car or not. Nothing in between. However the B58 in a Z4 is a great thing to have. I wish BMW would have a full on M Car but this will do for sure. And please the clown shoe Z car they had before was the ugliest car I ever seen.
Maybe I'll trade in my '08 MX-5 for a slightly used model. Or get the very similar Supra, keep the MX-5 and try to borrow my neighbor/freind's Yaris for the dog park.
Insanely overpriced for shitty Vernasca and mass-produced B58 (amazing engine, but it’s not that expensive to make) BMW wants to prove to their board that manuals and Cabrios are not selling, so they can axe them as soon as possible. Let them do it. Get them 40% off lightly used in a year

Bmw board is making mistake after mistake and whatever they do usually do last few years is a @#€& up. Best example is new 2.5 tones stupid plug in hybrid M5 that’s around the corner. Thats why we have to celebrate this kind of cars because they never ever going to come back.

You should’t keep your hand on the shifter when not shifting. It will wear out the gearbox quicker.
