    Growing the entire plant as a perennial will give you double or more harvest. The color is more intense. The pieces are bigger and longer. It's worth the wait.

    Try fermenting a puree of 6 cloves of garlic, a thumb size of ginger, a thumb size piece of turmeric, 1T lime juice, 1t salt, and about 12 ripe Hawaiian red spicy peppers (these are both sweet and nicely spicy, but some other variety might work but you might want a little red bell pepper for some sweetness). Ferment for about 5 weeks. This is really good on hard boiled eggs, used in the deviled egg mixture, or on lots of stuff.

    I have been growing turmeric for a few years. Turmeric only blooms after the first year. I harvest only what I think I will need to dehydrate for the winter and leave the rest in ground, if you do not live in extremely cold regions, you can always harvest it in the winter if needed (as long as you know where your plants were). Also, when I harvest a stalk, I pull off a piece and drop it back in the ground, gives it a head start and saves time in spring.

    Have never grown turmeric... Now that I’ve seen what you did, I wouldn’t mind getting some and trying it in the 2024 garden. Love the flavor - especially in rice! Thank you for teaching us. Best wishes from Kate in a Olympia, WA - 12/6/2023.

    I would love to see how your ginger is doing. I wonder if you could do the same with ginger and leave the small plants in the ground and just cut the tops. I'm in zone 10a so we don't get that cold. I just pulled it all, but I might try it next year. I think I want to try adding turmeric into the garden next year. I just need to find a place to get some plants.

    It is one of those plants that is really interesting but I feel like I would never use it and if I grew it seems like a couple plants would be plenty for me. I have taken turmeric for joint pain and I know how good it is but I have just never really cooked with the stuff. Maybe someday when I have more garden to plant in.

    My turmeric bloomed again this year and not from turmeric I left in the ground. I'm north of you, east TN, zone 7. I think it has more to do with the size of the mother roots you start with.

    • @jamestboehm6450

      Does heavy mulching and good soil help? I'm in Ohio and we have to insulate soil very well to keep it from freezing. Onions and garlic will survive with a deep straw and leaf mulch, an added plus is if parted in spring it's break down adds greatly to the soil. The worms LOVE it.

    • @MamaHoffman461
      @MamaHoffman461 Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@jamestboehm6450 I've done mine in very fertile raised beds and in fertile garden beds. No mulch, just because I didn't. The larger plants bloomed in both cases. I do not leave mine in the ground as we can get pretty cold some winters. Onions and garlic are different as they are cool season plants and survive winters pretty readily. Turmeric is a tropical plant. I would do some of both....save some mother roots and mulch heavily and bring some in and bury them in damp potting mix or sand. Like Travis, I pot mine up in late winter, water and give them light to get them growing as early as I can. The mother roots are the center of the plant, btw. You can plant any part of the tubers but that is what is typically saved and regrown.

    Turmeric is also a good analgesic. You can chew on a fresh rhizome when you get a headache, cramps, or back pains.😢

  • @79PoisonBreaker
    @79PoisonBreaker Před 9 měsíci +2

    most tubers will continue to swell until entire tops are dead. I'm wondering if treating like garlic and waiting to cut tops may benefit it in some way. will the smaller plants just die soon to give you a chance to clean the weeds up without the need to cut tops ( giving the chance to store more energy to be bigger next year).

    • @psalms125selah
      @psalms125selah Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yes you can replant it, and I would cover the area with good organic hay (not sprayed with any herbicides) or a thick layer of leaves to help keep the soil warmer and to keep the winter weed pressure off of it! It will re-emerge in the late spring/early summer when the surface ground temps get above 72' F. Help it out when it starts re-emerging by watering, keeping the soil moist, it also wouldn't hurt to fertilize it, realizing that since it is a root crop, the corms will get even bigger and it will flower better if it gets enough phosphorous and a little magnesium, but don't forget that it needs the nitrogen and potassium as well for leaf growth, I just throw some dried chicken manure, bone meal, a little epsom salt, and pure potash from an old wood burnt fire that didn't have any chemicals in it when it burned, like charcoal lighter fluid or gas, that is a no no for making potash for your gardens, but test your soils PH first and make sure it's not already neutral 7.0 or alkaline 7.1 or higher before adding the potash, if it is alkaline, then only use the potash sparingly over the beds! Hope this helps you to a great harvest for next year!
