On December 1, 1995, WHBQ and WPTY switched affiliations. This is from the first "Fox 13" 9pm newscast. Includes story about the affiliation switch that occured during the 5pm newscast.
I remember this switch. Claudia Barr and Byron Day (Hornaday), Jim Jaggers was chief meteorologist and Ron Savage was sports director. I used to love that crew. Rob Sawyer anchored the weekend broadcasts and filled in for Byron during 5 & 9 occasionally. I wish they had kept this graphics and music package. Sounds better than the generic one that Fox affiliates in the country are now using.
This was a separate deal from the New World CBS/FOX affiliation swap that happened a year prior to this switch. That deal happened because the NFC broadcast rights left CBS and went to FOX. This happened simply because ComCorp (WHBQ's then owners) were in financial trouble and put WHBQ on the block. The highest bidder was Fox, who was looking for a VHF affiliate in as many of the Top 50 markets as possible.
FOX 13 Eyewitness News! WHBQ's longtime newscast branding "Eyewitness News" combined with the then-new FOX13 general branding. Kick-ass combo! FOX13 held on to the eyewitness news name a little while longer
WHBQ was not one of the New World stations. Fox purchased the station separately from the New World deal, so they alone were responsible for the switch in Memphis.
