2. SOUNDBITE (English) Toby Stephens- actor - on his character:
" I play Captain Flint, he is the captain of the Warus pirate ship, most of the plot takes place around Nassau the Island in the Bahamas, which is kind of like a hub, a place when they fence all the stolen goods. He Captain Flint is the chief pirate on the island at the time, he's the sort of the top ranking pirate. He makes the most profit, but when we meet him in episode one he's had a sustained period, a fallow period where he hasn't really been performing too well, so there's, he's on rocky ground and there are other pirates trying to take over from him."

"It's incredible I don't know how you can compare this to anything else, it feels like a fully living breathing world that we get to inhabit everyday.When we first came here, because we came over here at the end of last year for pre production, we started boot camp, we were going over our training. And so it's kind of interesting to see the beach being built, it's kind of slowly developed and then there's be a bit more dressing on the set and then the ships would come together and painted and then we would get to go on it for the first time, so it was great being here to see it evolve. It was very different when we first came to how it is now."

"I'd kind of always wanted to do a pirate show nobody had really done it, and it kind of felt really right to be explore, there was really no version... of as many pirate moves as they are and as many pirate cliches as they are, no one had ever really looked at that world through a much gritter realistic lens which seemed cool to me, in a world that was so kind of cartoonized there was people that actually live like and what were the realities of that world. We ended up reading, we did a ton of research we sort of settled into this idea of rather than having it be completely historical, attaching it to existing literary figures and sort of once we settled into Flint and Silver, it started to kind of take shape."

"First day I arrived on set I was completely speechless I just never imagined that we would have this type of homogenous world because when I'm on set and I'm in a scene I know exactly where everything in this town is. I know exactly where the beach, I know where the tanners is, where the coopers is, where the blacksmiths are, Mr. Fraser, where I can go and value my goods. For me that gives you a very bog picture as an actor, you can have a greater sense of belief in a lot of ways."

NEW TV SERIES BLACK SAILS SET TO FUEL WAVE OF NEW PIRATE DRAMAS
Hold onto your seats, and get ready for some swash buckling action in the form of "Black Sails" the new pirate adventure from American network Starz.
Studios in Cape Town in South Africa, have undergone a major transformation to be made to look like Nassau Island, in the Bahamas. Here we find the brutal Captain Flint, and his men who have fallen on hard times and are trying to gain control of the New Providence Island.
The story takes place a number of years before the story of Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island."
British actress Hannah New stars as Eleanor Guthrie.

I can never thank the people who made Black Sails enough for this absolute gem of storytelling. I rewatch it every year and it takes me on a ride each time. I pick up new details every time. It’s just amazing.

This show needs a comeback
WHAT. It's amazing how much of it was CGI. The horizon and everything is barely noticeable. I love the visuals even more now seeing how much effort they actually put into it.

Check out Daniel Defoe's History Of The Pyrates. He was a contemporary of a lot of these guys.
