Amazing Cemetery in Iceland

  • Hólavallagarður is situated in central Reykjavík. It is the largest 19th-century cemetery in Iceland, with its oldest grave dating back to 1838. Many of the tombstones and sculptures are very artful, and some have a historical and cultural significance. Many notable Icelanders are buried here, including Jón Sigurðsson, Iceland's national hero, Bríet Bjarnhéðinsdóttir, often dubbed the first feminist, and Jóhannes Kjarval, Iceland's best-loved painter.
The graveyard also houses victims of the 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic, as well as a handsome monument to French sailors lost at sea. The cemetery was fully booked by the early 1930s, but families that bought their plots before then can still bury their dead here.

But this one isn't old. It was opened in 1838. The one it replaced, and which had been used since Viking times, would have been so much more interesting.

Majestically beautiful isn't it. The trees, though not that old show a passing of time, a stillness that can't be described but can be experienced.

A beautifully enchanted and peaceful resting place for the dead. The guardian was watching you, his sentries following you, but sensed you meant no harm. It was decided it was not your time to join their number, so you were allowed to pass. A stranger of the Living, come only to perview what will (in your time) become your fate.
    Thank you, Gentle Soul!
    A excellent presentation!

I was in Iceland in 2007 for a horseback riding tour. What a beautiful place it is. Those trees would be coveted because there are very few mature trees in Iceland. The Vikings used so much of the existing growth for building that the land was essentially cleared. There is an effort now to regrow forests but it will take a long time. The cats are thriving because there are really no natural predators in Iceland such as coyotes or wolves like we in North America have in our urban areas. The other thing that impressed me about Iceland was that pretty much every person I encountered spoke perfect English making travel there very easy. The people were very nice.

Fun fact, if cemeteries are not properly maintained, trees will grow over the plots, and the roots will break in to the coffins and feed off the nutrients of the bodies, so the trees literally eat the people.

Hi, Chris. Thanks for sharing. If I didn't know you are in Iceland, I would think it looked like a southern Georgia or Louisiana area. Especially with all the moss and very green trees. I always pictured Iceland as being a more snowcovered mountainous landscape. Maybe some of the spirits of the dead live in these cats.

I just so happen to love cemeteries and that was one of the most beautiful ones i have ever seen. I wish you captured more dates on the grave stones but the well preserved 1850's one was beautiful. Hell they were beautiful. Just want to say i love what you do and you should check out some abandoned and wacky places here in Washington state. Hope to see more.
