- This is a review of the Explore 12 from HumanWare. Here's what the website say's about the Explore 12...
Explore 12 is an easy-to-use, portable electronic magnifier that offers HD image quality for improved near and distance viewing. As the largest portable magnifier in the Explore series, its 12-inch touchscreen is perfect for anyone desiring a larger interface, plus it has the added benefit of a foldable stand enabling easy use for reading, writing, and other manual tasks.

Hi Sam, I want to say thank you so very much for doing these videos for people that have some vision remaining. And those who are nearly blind also. Because they probably don’t know about these products like we do. So I really do appreciate all these videos that you do thank you so very much. Love you and your family always.❤️❤️❤️❤️🤟🤟🤟🤟
I appreciate Human Ware's committment to making accessibleproducts. TY sam for reviewing this, it's always good to learn what is out there for the visually impaired community.
I spent a lot of time designing this device, I am glad it gets appreciated exactly for what it is; and what it is not.
The weight comes from the screen and the battery. I could have saved ~100-150g on the touchscreen but it would have been far less robust during drop tests. The battery is needed because of the amount of light needed to get you a reflection free experience.
It is not a perfect device but I do believe it is very capable at what it does.
Thank you for the fair review.
Can the window height on blinds be changed? Is the screen brightness changeable for day and night use?
@@myeflatley1150 The height can be changed, yes. I no longer work for humanware so I do not have the shortcut on hand but it is in the manual. There is however no day / night cycle adjustment nor ambiant light adjusting.
Hello, i actually work for a company that manufactures low vision devices, we have a ton of patients who are driving with the aid or our devices, including myself. As a low vision driver, the bioptic telescopes help us immensely with distance and seeing things on the road, however regarding seeing things inside the vehicle is challenging, for instance, the readings on the dash as well as the middle infotainment console. Would you possibly be able to come up with something similar to this wonderful device that would help us with this issue?, something that could be mounted on these areas in vehicles?, the market for this is HUGE, because our company get inquiries regarding this regularly, but we have nothing to offer. I would absolutely love to be able to comfortably see the readings on the dash as well as the infotainment console in my vehicle, and to be able to zoom in/out, man this wld be a game changer for all of us low vision drivers
Gee, how I would've loved this in my K-12 days! Also a fan of it telling you what the color schemes are as you cycle through. As a colorblind individual, I find that a worthwhile touch.
Hmm, thanks for the review Sam. What I would like to see though is you trying to read a book using this device. All of those video magnifiers are usually presented on top of a leaflet or one page of text. In real life I always wanted to be able to read books again. This type of magnifier will be very clumsy to use, in my view anyway. I have a similar device (Clover Book Pro) and hardly ever use it. For reading books I use my old Snow from Zoomax. Not a sophisticated device, but it's lightweight and truly portable being 4.2 inch screen. Yes, the screen is small but I can hold it in my hand easilyfor a long time and enjoy reading while sitting on the sofa. And I am much faster reading like this, just hover over the page, so video magnifier is the extension of my hand. Take care and looking forward to seeing more of your content.
I have been provided with this, the explore 12, by my blind rehabilitation specialist. If reading many 8 1/2 by 11 printed pages is important for you, this is not the viewer you need. It does work to do that, but not well when in the stand. The stand stage is too small for that. Another viewer might be better considered. My explore 5 does a good job of reading almost anything line by line.
It needs a neck lanyard so that it does not fall to the ground when used in distance mode. At nearly $2000 with tax and two and a half pounds, it needs a neck lanyard.
That is a nice magnifier, I wish they had a 15 inch. Humanware is very good for the visually impaired community.
Excellent review Sam. Thanks.
The "blinds" are used by people with cataracts along with white on black, or grey on black mode. This reduces ambient light that makes cataracts glow.
Download the users manual. It will answer many questions.
Nice video was considering this bubble by Mercury 12 for college
What is the best 0-12’ digital magnifier?
Love it
I don't know how anyone affords all these gadgets. I wish I could get any of them. Would be life changing. I struggle navigating the world. I wonder if there's grants or help out there for people.
Veterans with 100% disability can request devices thru the VA. Some public libraries have desktop magnifiers for public use. The downtown library in San Diego has a whole room for blind people.
@@myeflatley1150 I'm not a veteran
@@thryssinstitches9655 me either. I need one for a crime committed in my home. I do not know if law enforcement helps with such things.
Everything is so expensive These people should try to make these devices affordable or have payment plans for people who are struggling with finances Esp people that are disabled
That's awesome
I would like to know about the other devices that you mention that are equal to or greater than this device and where you would get the map
Sure, I have a video magnifier playlist on my channel where you can find those videos.
Thanks SAMTA...
Hi thank you for this video. I have the Explorer 8 but it's 4 years old and out of warranty. I love the 8 but it's $1250 this is $1700..can you suggest others to look at ? Thanks Mike
I'm a bioptic driver and I'm wondering how this device would work using in a car mounted over the infotainment console or even the dashboard to magnify those areas🤔
Hey Sam what was that cane you ran over with a car ? Amd do you still use the Mojave can ?
The No Jab Cane
@@theblindlifeand I bought one and I love it
What about power support? Does it work with support of power bank?
If the power bank supports quickcharge 2-3 yes. It will work with other power banks but I cannot guarantee that it will charge while in use, especially in stand mode. If the device is off then yes it will charge.
A version of this is also an android tablet.
Does an xy table fit in the desktop?
Yes
1:15 Weren't you referring to the *color* pink? *wink*
Lol, wondered if anybody would notice!
Strange, no sound here on this video???
