New Russian Tank - Sprut-SDM1 Light Tank

- In 2015, Russia unveiled a new modernization program for their Sprut SD light tanks. Often also referred to as, Tank Destroyer, although, while doing research for this video, I've mostly come across the term "Light amphibious tank" used by Russian sources and officials, so I will be calling it a light tank.
The new modernization is called Sprut-SDM1, and although first shown in 2015, it wasn't until December of 2020, that they decided to actually do something with it, and they decided to purchase an undisclosed amount of vehicles.

Also Gaijin is in Russia, they can easily get date from available sources (Which does contain accurate data as Russian tanks aren't as secretive as NATO tanks). Also they can go to the respectful military for information, as journalistic historians.

T60,T70 and T80 WW2 era light tanks. Back in our day we didn't have no fancy water crossing abilities. We had to use bridges, rafts or drive on the rivers when they were frozen. And if the bridges were destroyed or no rafts available you wait until you were built one or for the rivers and lakes to freeze in the winter time. It also didn't help when the German Artillery and SPGs tried shelling the frozen rivers and lakes as the ice would crack open leaving to a cold watery grave.

It's full on airborne light tank, meant to be air dropped where there are no heavy enemy assets, and to engage from stand off range at which auto cannons do not pose a direct threat. It's literally the only 125mm main gun in the game.

@@Erm123-b7g It's the only 125mm main gun in the world that can be air dropped, and not only that, it's amphibious. Given available 125mm munitions, from HE, air burst fuse HE, guided missiles and rods, Sprut provides strongest air drop fire support in the world.
These things deployed with IR capable air drones that feed targeting data, along with 120mm Nona, is a nightmare scenario to anyone in the area.
As long as they have air cover and resupply of munitions, they can hold everything short of MLRS or tactical strike.

Funny how Russia can develop and implement gun platforms that support infantry units, yet the U.S. can't do diddly-squat with out "10 years" (sarcasm) of evaluation and enormous expenditure of cost, only to say, "Nah, we ain't gonna go with this."

It can fly, swim and drive on land. So it's basically an armoured duck.
I have always found the eastern ability to deliver massive, NBC capable and all rounded mechanised forces by air to be deeply fascinating.
And a lot of them they outnumber the next biggest paratrooper force by 4-5 times
With the vast ranges of Russia, Airborne troops are basically the only way to quickly respond to threats. Makes sense they excell at this.

The new jet still needs more investment to become reality. I hope they can find customers, Russian fighter market kinda struggle lately due to China start compete and take some customers in the same sections as Russia.

This shows that, from a technical point of view, russia is definitely capable of making good and up to date equipment, but sadly can't afford large numbers of it and still uses outdated equipment.

You're actually being pulled out by a parachute! Not much different than jumping with one. And every vehicle has several chutes, so even if one doesn't open nothing bad should happen.

@@seeleagent Yup, these do. When VDV started experimenting with air dropping armor, they tried to drop crews separately but it took too long for the vehicle and the crew to meet on the ground. BMDs are landing with a full crew and passengers, the platform they land on has something like an airbag, and rockets to slow it down at the end of the travel. It looks pretty neat on video.
Finally a proper review of the the Sprut
This is a very interesting way of getting MBT fire power into your airborne units. I think it’s a good idea but it definitely needs ERA or some form of trophy system.
yeah, howver i imagine it might make it overweight for airdrops, that said passive and active protection systems could be dropped separately and mounted on it later.
Except that you only really need MBT firepower when fighting other MBTs.
@@jarink1 that or particularly tough enemy fortifications. It’s all about versatility, an airborne unit dropped behind enemy lines can deal with literally any threat they come across on the ground. It also takes substantial burden off of your logistical system.
it really doesnt. because in paratrooper scenario this will be surrounded with troops and such system will be very hard to reach it. this would only be mobile platform form 125 mm cannon. long range to destroy bunkers and such...
Every tank needs APS now as Ukraine war has shown. Even western tanks are vulnerable.
Now imagine dozens of these and BMD-4s in enemy backyard wreaking havoc. Armor protection is weaker, but if deployed correctly, then it can be very effective against unprepared enemy doing ambushes and surprise hit&run attacks.
Yeah, except russia still uses comand tactics, in Georgia russian soldiers under fire just sat and waited for orders. If they used operations tactics then yes, but they dont seem to want to teach their population to take initiative.
in fact, an additional modular protection is being developed for the bmd and Sprut, I think they will also supply an active Protection Complex if necessary, just with the installation of modular armor, these machines will not be able to swim and be released from the parachute system. therefore, additional armor will be installed after the vehicles are dropped from the sky, on the ground(if necessary), of course this will require additional transport aircraft
Yea, good tactics are needed. With good training and tactics, you can effectively wreck the enemy.
Perfect for the explotaition phase of the deep battle. Once the tactical breakthrough is achieved, these things can pop up anywhere behind the enemy lines and attack strategical targets before new lines can be formed

It looks like it is at the similar weight class with the BMP / BMD
It is meant to have as many shared parts as possible with BMD-4 and BMD-4M, to put an easy on the logistics of the airborne troops. So yeah, it basically is a tank version of BMD :)))

Hell, jumping out of planes was dangerous enough for me in the Army... But inside of a mini-tank... HELL NO. Also, it is amazing how light this vehicle is - When I was a Bradley commander, its weight was about 28 tons (now around 30+) with the 25mm gun... Seeing this fire that full-power 125mm cannon is a riot.
This tank could be a definition pure support gun in the modern era.
A potent gun in a lightly armoured platform that could be deployed anywhere, beside infantry always a backbone of any armed forces and a support gun behind them is always a welcome
2:30 the problems with excessive recoil don't have to do with the shot already being sent down range, but that doesn't mean they aren't real problems. It could cause a delay for the gunner's or driver's next task after the first shot has been discharged. The violent recoiling of the entire vehicle could cause interruptions, disorientation, and fatigue for the whole crew.
It’s a full power 125mm on an 18ton chassis.
The thing is...A light tank don't stay in one place to reacquire target....Shoot and scoot is the name of the game. They are not for stand up slug fest.
It's not meant to be in highly contested zones tho. It's meant to do the clean up and add on the exploitation phase
A muzzle brake can help reduce the recoil
I'm sure this vehicle would be pretty op in WarThunder. Since how balancing/penetration works in this game armor is not a big factor at all in gameplay.
We do need vehicles like this, however (as in more support/light vehicles at the highest tiers). MBT gameplay is so basic, it is good to mix it up with tanks with different playstyles.
Video games is about the only scenario where a machine like this would actually be useful.

I think light tanks are always underestimated in their capabilities and with modern tech you could couple this with a small fleet of drones that look for hot spots around the tank using IR and then the crew can take evasive action or take out a target with that big gun.

Looks like a good vehicle to add into a mix of other armored vehicles. In my opinion theres always a use case for a vehicle which has the same main gun as your MBT but doesn't carry the full price and weight and complexity of production of one.

any towelie with a black market laser pointer can roast an MBT in modern times thats why many advanced militaries are cutting their armor divisions. Gone are the days of breaking stalemates in trench warfare and rolling through countrysides today it is about air power anti air power in the form of missile technology and beyond that hypersonic and laser weaponry

I prefer my vehicle to be heavily armored if you are going to give it high explosive shells.

18 tons = not much armor. The new US BOOKER "light tank" is 35 tons, can't be air dropped and is not amphibious, so a light tank that is under gunned. Maybe the old Sheridan light tank was not so bad after all if given modern targeting and coms.
And the Sheridan still need specialized equipment for its amphibious capability

Seems like a good balance of mobility and firepower. If not protection. But a light tank is a light tank and if you want the front and sides proof against auto cannon fire it essentially becomes a medium tank. So just don't get hit.
Nah. Sprut tank is a great tank destroyer that can penetrate many MBT armors. Its role is mainly a fire support vehicle that engages soft and hard targets with armors that are not MBTs such as jeeps, APCs and SAMs. Also, some terrains are not suitable for MBT due to high elevation and dense jungle. A light tank is a good addition to the defensive force for more firepower against enemies that parachuted in or landed via the beach.
Great tank for paratrooper support and hiding behind a dune/hill and shooting, horrible for urban/forest combat

That "dropping from a plane" feature is very useful. If they know of a situation where ground troops need backing up by armor such as the Sprut they can just drop a few of them in and turn the tide against the enemy. (Note to our military: Never leave our troops without air cover)
Keep in mind that paratroopers are a separate branch of the armed forces, in practice not too dissimilar to USMC in how they're utilised. They get their own procurement, their own command structure and own doctrine.

@@michaelm6597 It seems illogical that Russian military assets do not come with gps when they export the same tanks, jets etc to other countries. Even Ukraine uses the same military equipment. Logic dictates that if Russia do not have miltiary gps in their vehicles which is unlikely, the Ukraines who use similar vehicles should faces the same problem but the West didn't mention anything about that.
@@annoyedcat9291 im not saying they lack it entirely, but in large part there were several reports that a large number of ifv's were lacking gps i had seen this amoungst a handful of articles and not just one but article swamping is making it hard to refind and cite to you. The road sign agency of ukraine started a campaign to destoy road signs early on because they had seen from either captured russians or from vehicles that were abandoned the lack of gps systems. This was something amoungst a miriad of other things that was showing that corruption has been running rampant in the russian army. It does sound like a rash thing to say but i would not say it if i hadnt heard multiple things on it
@@michaelm6597 The problem with media is that most it is difficult to validate if the "facts" are indeed true and not propaganda by either sides. Just recently the mainstream media claims that Russian ruble was on the verge of collapsing but today, the ruble has bounced back stronger than before the invasion begun. Even the death toll on both sides are disputed. While it is possible for some vehicles not to have gps for various reason due to corruption or poor maintenance of the equipment, by and large, it makes no sense that a superpower country like Russia isn't capable of using gps.

I am no expert, but with amphibious ability, lighter frame and presumably smaller logistics footprint, it might be advantageous when used in tundra theatre. And with Arctic warming that theatre will become more important.
Its purpose is rather straightforward - it's for VDV, aka the paratroopers, which is a separate branch of the armed forces. What they care about is being able to bring as much airdroppable firepower as possible to the fight, because that's all they'll get once they're deployed. That is also while nearly everything they have is lightly armoured and mobile - see their self-propelled artillery vehicles like Nona, Sprut itself as a light tank, BMD as a paratrooper IFV and so on.

Light tanks, the reason that it being famous because:
At Sino-India border conflict (Recently), the India lack any tank can be operated properly at extreme high altitude while PLA did have. Expecially ZTQ-15 being show up on today.
That's just in India and china probably, russia was developing this for quite some time and this was the first project that Indian army actually wanted to test out even though it was in development process, considering india china border there is little to no ground for any Armoured combat and india does have T72 and T90s up there against china but that cannot replace the role of light tanks. strangely There were even reports of chinese troops rotating their light tanks with their heavy ones maybe because india deployed their main tanks or because the engine in ZTQ 15 was having troubles. Mountain warfare is never supposed to be mechanised fighting.
Considering it's supposed to land with paratroopers or partake in amphibious landings, it's gonna bring lots of firepower to those forces. By the time the enemy reacts with tanks and heavy weapons, hopefully much more powerful units like the T-70 and T-90 will be there to reinforce.

What a peculiar vehicle! Considering the very light armor and high mobility one would assume it's more of an infantry support weapons, but, alas the 120mm cannon is way overkill for that. Also, I can't imagine this thing trying to fire at a main battle tank twice - either the first shot is a kill or you better get out of dodge. Especially considering the recoil making follow up shots hard to pull of fast.
I've never seen the variable ground clearance. Definitely a stellar feature for ambush tactics.
Well it's a glass cannon tank... But it's certainly very useful against country that have a lot of MBT and you want to be very defensive. With the armour protection, I think can call it a mobile anti tank gun platform. Such concept is similar to World war II M18 Hellcat. A 76 mm gun turret on a simple chassis. So it's basically a M18 with advance technology... And a metal top

Considering original Sprut was project of artillery department, I would stick rather stick whit tank destroyer designation. Effectively, Sprut is modern Hellcat.

The recoil can be a problem on uneven ground. The center of mass looks pretty high on this one. On uneven ground I think its possible the recoil can flip it to the side.

The guys sitting in the army actually design the RFI to suit Russian tanks. Be it the light tank or the new FRCV RFI. The light tank says it should have protection against tanks, a 125mm gun, be amphibious and weight under 25 tons! The FRCV says that it should be able to counter UCAVs, should have EW, ESM and a crew capsule and weight under 50 tons! Even the T14 weighs 55 tons+

A lot of countries are making light-tank equivalents. France, Italy, Israel to name a few. Looks like they are making a big comeback.
While they may refer to them however they like in media, as of now, they're employed at the divisional level in tank destroyer companies, together with missile-armed tracked tank destroyers.
As such, they're supposed to be held in reserve, and under no [normal] circumstances are to be used as tanks.
It also explains why there are so few of them. While original Sprut-SD isn't exactly a popular vehicle with the airborne, fact is that very few are actually needed. It's a highly specialized instrument to make airborne less susceptible to tanks.

Glass canon. Seems like a cheap way to achieve same firepower and maneuverability while sacrificing armor. And it has somewhat of a smaller profile? Probably not. Quick deployment firepower basically.

Fourth attempt: How well would Ukrainian Nozh reactive armor work with a pike nose design (such as on the is3) or some other angled WW2/Cold War design? Most armor designs today are optimized for flat surfaces (hence why the old designs fell out of favor), but Nozh seems to work the best when projectiles hit it at an angle. So would a pike nose work for it?

That's why they literally use rocket booster to soften the landing, which is the primary reason why it can be airdropped with the crew inside of it
@@Kalashnikov413 a weld is a weld, if you don't do it right it's going to fail. Also no landing will be "soft" there's always stress on the structure.
If it's fitted with ERA panels & APS then it's protection can be improved at a cost of weight. It's maximum weight shall be capped at ~25 tonne include engine upgrade to ~600hp.

It's very cool until something goes wrong and your crew goes splat with the tank. Those airdrops go wrong all the time.

Also if parachute failing is a concern then people shouldn't jump either. Guess that's too uncool to risk chute failure.
@@EcchiRevenge The rigging involved in vehicle drops is far more complicated than that of paratroopers so the failure rate is expoenentially higher. Vehicles also don't have reserve chutes.
The issue is that you have to train the way you fight, which means dropping crews in their tanks during training, so if something goes wrong you lose the crew and not just a tank. In combat that would be an acceptable trade off yes, but it's a lot harder to justify the risk in training which is about the only time anyone does airborne ops.
I think the last time anyone tried dropping light tanks into battle was the invasion of Panama over 30 years ago, so it's easily possible for an airborne vehicle like this to spend its entire service life just being used for training and over that time accidents will happen.
Air dropped with a full crew? Talk about pucker factor.

Sprut uses a rather unique type of suspension. It's specifically designed to allow the entire vehicle move back with the recoil and distribute stress equally throughout the body of the vehicle, so my guess is, with regular maintenance, it will last as long as any other component of the vehicle (engine, gun, etc.) At least if the gun is fired forward. I'm a little skeptical about those shots off to the side that throw the vehicle to the opposite side of the road, that looks awful. I suspect the intended use of the gun is to try to fire it forward whenever possible to optimize the shock absorption, but with capability to shoot to the side if needed

Logical next step is to upgrade it with a remote control/autonomy set from ... doking MV4 ... cough cough I mean Uran 6/9 ... sorry.
i think a purpose built remote control vehicle would be better, save space and weight from not needing the crew.

There are two ways to make a light tank:
Medium caliber main gun and armor that can stop light cannon.
Major caliber main gun and armor primarily intended to defeat small arms and shell fragments.
There's an argument to be made in favor of each design philosophy.
Although it's protection is in the weaker side but you can add additional modular composite armour coz the weight is just 18 Tons.
it should remain air-droppable and amphibious.
Maybe do something like the US was going to do with the M8 Light tank, drop the tank on the ground, and later on apply the package after they've secured a zone where they can apply it safely

I don't think the lack of armor is really an issue at all here, it's a air dropped light tank so mobility is far more important than armor, it's more or less an up gunned IFV after all. It should be able to avoid taking any serious fire by using it's mobility and sensors to always find the enemy first and be gone before they can return fire. Otherwise for it's class it is remarkably well armed and is certainly capable of doing it's job and it even has somewhat luxurious extra features like being amphibious that few other similar vehicles can boast of.
