Enter the Gungeon Any% Convict Speedrun World Record!

- As of 9/25/2016, this is the world record time for using the Convict character for an any% Dragun run in patch 1.09. Shaved 36 seconds off the previous record!
I think the most satisfying part of this run was making the Kill Pillars disappear in 20 seconds using an Enraging Photo-enhanced Railgun :)

By the way, since a few people have asked: No, those aren't visual glitches. The Rectangler shotgun turns enemy sprites into rectangles!

If you're wondering why I'm not using the "walk faster out of combat" option, it's because this run was done on 9/25/2016, when the game was only on patch 1.09. The "walk faster out of combat" option got added in a later patch.
When you beat the kill pillars faster than the bird
It depends on the room layout imo like if you have walls against gatling gull its ez but if not then
EM Loses The best layout imo is the one with the two water pools running vertically across the room.
If you get him on the narrower sides and roll into the middle area it gives you so much more dodge room as he'll be unable to follow you around with his minigun jammed up your ass.
Personally I like the 4 Pillars one because it helps having cover alot.
Easiest Floor 1 boss is Trigger Twins imo

That's the name of the game when you speedrun things like ETG though. You have to pray to RNGesus to give you a fast route and some useful items along the way - and that will most likely only happen if you take 1000+ runs at least. The last part is not really different from any other speedrunning games - practice makes perfect and every second needs to be shaved off where they can; be it through RNG, game understanding, skill or all of these and more :)
@@Micras08 Yeah. Speedrunning roguelikes means being able to play very consistently so that when you do have a run with good drops, you can take advantage.
Don’t forget about the iron coin too, thing cleared 3 rooms for him instantly

@@LudicSavant it's interesting how that works. It's similar in other games like that too, using your health as a resource instead of ammo. While there's some ppl who see their health as "that thing that once it reaches zero, which is inevitable, I will die" but then there's you. Or atleast, most people try and not get hit as to get the health upgrade. Idk y, I just find it weird yet interesting as how ppl see their health in games

Funny thing is- aside from the REALLY fast running from place to place and skipping shops, this is mostly how a really good player plays. Rougelikes like this are meant to be speedruns in away.
yess I love how natural this gungeon speedrun is; instead of having crazy starts or skips it just seems like really solid optimized play
Repsect, all the rooms and drops are complete random, so you can’t strategize due to the shifting walls and the different enemies per room.
So doing a speed run of this should be pretty hard
Thanks! You can strategize a little bit about your route -- after you've seen countless random dungeons generated you can kind of recognize patterns, to some extent, in the way the game generates rooms. There are guides to recognizing this on ETG speedrunner forums, but it still takes a lot of experience (or at least it did for me).
Even then, there's a luck element too, so getting a good speedrun is about playing consistently enough that when you do get solid RNG, you can take advantage of it and not waste it!

they literally go the best room clearer, the best boss killer, and an item that clears out rooms.
I remember this run so well from way long ago when I haven't even considered running this game and I never commented on it but this was one of the first OG runs of gungeon that really impressed me and led me to trying speedrunning this game myself and eventually beating out your run with dumb luck haha. Great run, well executed.
The tension at the end was real.

@@commanderleo After like 100h I still think Gatling Gull is more random and therefore difficult then other Floor 3/4 bosses like Mine Flayer, Pillars and Treadnaught (who is usually a Master Round for me). idk but Gatling Gull manages it to shoot weird bullet directions which are strange to dodge when there are no hiding spots inside of the room, similar to Ammoconda and I hate her too for her RNG :D

Since the Convict character gets damage bonuses when she takes damage, I see any leftover hearts at the end of a Convict run as time I could have saved by getting in touch with my inner berserker heedless of danger for a few more seconds. :)

I was stuck on the first bosses a while, it's a fine game where practice really does work however, I can often at least get to the dragun now, and I've perfected him fairly regularly.
Still can't beat the Old King or the Lich however.

KarmageddonUK yeah the lich and old king are really difficult but you really just need to learn their patterns and have good guns, thats how i beat them

The old king has more health then the dragun (I think) that boss is stupid.
I'm definitely not speedrun material, because i like to waste time in every floor trying to find every little thing.

I remember when i was pretty new to the game and got a mega buster first or second floor, even then I could still mop the floor with my mediocre skills but then i ruined it all by fighting Blockner and losing all of my health for the boss.
Weegee Weeg How... did you fight Blockner... when you were new...? Did you look up a guide that told you what to do?
I did the same thing back then. Long after I beat him that time I realized that was a special boss
blocker is nothing compared to the hell that is treadnaught.
Treadnought is the easiest boss of that floor. You just need to lead the tank around the room and stick to the edges.
Spurdo mies I find that everyone has their own opinion on which bosses are easiest and most difficult. Some find certain bosses impossible while others find it a cakewalk. Personally, I think Cannonbalrog is the easiest of the chamber 3 bosses by far, but it's pointless to say that any one boss is objectively the toughest.
Damn this dude takes three hits on Gatling Gull and doesn’t rage quit, he’s even better than me.
On the Convict, you actually want to get hit on purpose in order to instantly reload your weapon and get a big damage boost. For speedrunners, your life bar is basically an ammo bar for Enraging Photo (as long as you're confident your dodging is consistent enough that you can survive at half a heart left).
I think this is a world record without turbo mode that could be "literally faster"
It would be close but I think the missing out on the two cycle dragun and no decent active item means that this run could be beaten, it was great though I know I'm nowhere near as good.
In settings you can set : if you're not in combat u have really big speed
That feature was added well after this was recorded (way back in patch 1.09)

You can get slightly more hits in per second if you move away from the beholsters beam before you roll into it, could've cut a second or two off the run
I mean seconds like that are probably way less impactful than luck on gungeon runs, obviously you need to be able to do bosses well, but more important is finding boss room quick, also good guns can really speed up everything

the BSG and Railgun really did a lot of work in this run, do really good speedruns require that calibre of drops to get done?
Good drops are of course going to make for a faster run than bad drops. That said, I find my times swing more based on how quickly I can find the boss than any particular piece of gear. I've had a few runs that were nearly as fast (a little over 16 minutes) using less flashy items like the Hegemony Carbine + Double Vision for most of the run, for example.

What about speed increasing items such as shotgacola and such? How severely do those impact your run speed?
Boss Rush runs do, but the basic runs have a DPS-limit enabled for every boss. The S and A tier guns almost all surpass the limit.
Don't forget really fast chamber 1 boss with wrecktangler drop. Really good shotgun.

Just a tip if you’re speedrunning convict and you’re probably better than me honestly but try to time taking damage to do extra damage, it adds up. I can get some bosses like balrog in less than a minute if I time my damage properly.

I was actually (usually =P) getting hit on purpose to activate the Convict's Enraging Photo and clear faster.
The Convict's Enraging Photo significantly boosts your damage and instantly reloads your weapon when you get hit. So if you're confident in your dodging skills, you can afford to let something bring you all the way down to half a heart in order to kill things faster.

aziz I believe it. But it’s still crazy though. I just can’t get past like floor 4 most times from bad luck with drops or enemy placement. I’ll give it another shot one day
how does he know where boss' rooms are?
I don't know for sure where they are, but I can make educated guesses about which route will get me to the boss faster based on the rooms I've already seen on a floor and some tendencies / limitations of the map generation system.

You know theres a setting where you can run faster when you clear a room right? Regardless this was a really good speedrun, well done.
That setting didn't exist way back in 2016 / patch 1.09, when this run was recorded. It was added to the game later (in patch 2.0, IIRC).

You can do it! You can measure the time either from the video itself, or the "IGT" (in-game time) shown on the popup when you beat the game.

Wouldn't be all that much harder considering there's no actual gameplay shifts, just a control shift.
Also could've shaved a few seconds by not collecting the hegemony credits they auto collect when you leave the room

Oh yeah, definitely. Though not for the reason people in the comments usually think -- I was confident that I wouldn't die (when I'm playing Convict I kind of think of my life bar as an ammo bar for Enraging Photo).
The main thing I was worried about was how fast I would end it, since I was finally within range of the time after so many tries!
