Mike is not only a fantastic player, but a really good person. I remember messaging him on his forum and he made the time to reply to me. He's a inspirational person and highly motivational. I studied speed kills and lives, and his exercises made me a way better player to. Great guy and musician.

I’ve spent a lot of time watching and listening to Becker. Figured out how he did a lot of that with a friend. Thank God for that program Transcribe. My favorite is the Black Cat arpeggios.

MAB deserves much more praise than he gets in the world. i dont understand when people complain his music being too robotic and lacking feel.. they mustve never even picked up any of his albums tbh
JayB B Most of those people are just jealous because they can't play at his level of technical proficiency. I mean since Shawn Lane is no longer with us, he is currently the most technically proficient guitarist who's capable of playing a variety of different styles and is high advanced in music theory.

I know exactly what they are talking about! I love his playing but writing a super hit song that will last the test of time is something I have not seen him do. Not saying he can't or has not and possibly not been credited etc. being a nice guy like he is that is totally possible. I will say that he is an incredible player and I admire him very much as a skill level I have yet to achieve. His albums have the same issue many great musicians have and that is the way the material is composed as a piece. I can listen to him all day and go wow but a non-guitar player would not like it as much as say a Rolling Stone album which has nowhere near the technical skill but the composition and the writing is what makes the Stones played more. Who says "Hey play that guitar rock song with no vocals and continuous solos again!" Oh wait, they do when they are drunk and Steve V. die hards! Steve should have stuck with Dave Lee Roth or Coverdale. That was some of his best work, now just crap and not even skilled stuff anymore like Mike here can do.
This could've been 10 hours long and I would've never gotten bored. Excellent work!
Batio is always one of the most impressive players to me because of just how clutch he is with his technique and how early in the game he developed these skills and techniques.
Mike was my guitar teacher when I was just starting out.
He was great back then! I still have all my hand written lessons he wrote out for me!

Hands down the world's greatest guitar player. And far too unknown to the wider community. This guy should be world famous in my opinion. I had the pleasure to meet him here in Australia when he was here a few years ago. Such a super nice guy.
Justin Meikle Literally, who could play at his speed and technically proficient. Understandably we had Shawn Lane, but he's unfortunately no longer with us so that means Michael is the current most technically proficient, and most diverse player.

Thx for sharing i remember his 1st VHS tape . I watched the US fest Live via those Giant satellite dish's from the 80's. Ozzy started w/paranoid if i'm not mistaken only time he has done that he ends the show w/that one.
I can’t believe this was seven years ago. I remember the day it came out. I watched it live.
This video is why MAB is at the top of the food chain. The passion he has for the instrument is staggering, and his professionalism is large and in charge. Not just speed, but musical speed. It just sounds good. His tributes to all the other greats is the stuff of legends. And he knows what is important. He will use a solid state amp without a pause if it *sounds* good. Most would publicly shun a solid state amp and use some expensive tube. Not MAB. His practicality is awesome. I could keep going, but you already know. And Troy is one of the best CZcamsrs in the game.
Let´s see other guys can do this in the age of 61!

I met Mike checking in and boarding a flight to Frankfurt in 1994 or 1995 and he was and obviously still is just a fantastic individual. Over the years bumped into him playing with some mutual friends in Northern IL and Music Center in SE Wisconsin. Always a class act. So cool to stumble onto this recent video this morning. Awesome!

@@carapungo Nah, Grady is a great guy, he would never intentionally disrespect a legend like Batio. He was probably a little bit nervous. I know I would be. He has spent hundreds, maybe thousands of hours analyzing great players and editing these awesome videos for us, for free. Not to mention designing a way to capture the precise movements of the picking hand. I doubt his intention was to "be the center of attention". Sorry sir but you're wrong.

I met MAB in a little music store clinic about 5 or 6 years ago. He was with the Dean Guitar guy who plays bass (sorry, can't remember name) but he is an genuine about music and guitar and metal as you see in videos. He really is the ultimate ambassador to rep us diehard metalheads. A really passionate, wysiwyg kind of guy who is in the top five metal guitarist *EVER* A real treasure.

I had such a terrible childhood I missed most of this stuff, man I feel so lost watching this dude mike and Troy. I wish I could meet these guys. I started to play guitar again after 40 years. I'm struggling now trying to find my way.

Good to see our man on there. Back in 1990 I had his Star Lick VHS. I tried to learn to emulate that odd picking style and soon realised that I needed to mute the strings more due to my own sloppy technique. Years later I got to work with Michael and I learnt my technique was still sloppy. He is a genuine as this vid shows him to be and I'll treasure my time with him. Top work on the Vid too.
Never have checked out Michaelangelo before for some reason now I'm a fan! Great interview and I love your channel!

GREAT interview! I saw SO MANY amazing shows in the 80s at the Country Club - it really was one of the best places. Waters in San Pedro was small and cool too. Not to mention so many great shows at Troubadour. I could go on for hours. But I love how Michael is quite humble and very honest about it all. He really is cool. Really a great interview. I loved Holland but so always loved MAB's bands.

I honestly love this man so much. I was never 100% into his music, but more like leisurely listening to his album stuff from time to time and really enjoying his thing, but him as a person is a whole new level. He is so pure and so honest. I would love to hang out with Michael for a beer and talk about guitar even though I have never played the guitar in my life.

He came off as a great guy who REALLY CARES about his music. 100% respectable. You my friend... like I told you in an email, all your work that you've done is truly deserving of an honorary Phd. I should know as I've taught music (guitar) in the Ivory Tower from my entire professional life. Keep up the great work!!!
Another home run Troy and Co. Really enjoyed Michael's war stories of things back then and how they are today. The biggest thing I took away from this was how Michael has had no injuries which is a testament to his economic technique giving him years of lighting longevity with more to come. I have loved guitar and played guitar since the late 80s.Guitars and cars are the twin pillars of my life from then till right now.It always amazes me when I discover one of the truly incredible guitar players - how had it taken tiill now for me to hear of them.
There are two truly exceptional yet very different guitar players that I've discovered since around Xmas (2019 it's now the end of Mar 2020 for thos reading this 5 years from now before Coronavirus changed everything forever lol).
Within days I heard Robin Trower and that late 60s/early 70s brand of blues rock with a healthy dose of Hendrix in there too is absolutey 100% my favourite kind of guitar but my musical awakenings and where I suppose my musical sensibilities were formed was firmly in the 80s hard rock,metal and thrash/speed metal sounds.
All that crazy fret wanking,neo classical ,technical virtuosity that ruled the mid to late 80s is where it all began for me even if it was less about the extreme shredders and more the likes of Angus Young/Gary Moore or Kirk Hammett that were my first heroes rather than the Satriani's and Via's that blew my mind with their sheer ability but didn't hit the spot quite like the aformentioned.
Anyway,I then learnt about this fellah here and I couldn't believe I'd never knew of him all this time cos I feel like I damn well should have done,somehow I dropped the ball on that one.As I said I have always been less about the true technical wizards on the guitar with the exception of Mr Yngwie J who constantly blows my mind with how good he is yet MAB who'd I absolutley class in that very,very select number of truly virtouso technical guitar players who are on a level all their own is probably the best and finest of these type of playes I've yet heard.And like Mr YJM I find MAB as good to listen to as he is a guitarist. I absolutely appreciate Vai and Satriani et all and don't see it as anything bad to hear them play but there'ssomething a little clinical about them for my taste,I find that with a lot of shredders but Mr MAB is the full package,he gots the technical ability,the awesome skill and precision that any shredder/technical guitarist has to have but he's clearly has a sense of what's musical and melodic that was what set YJ M apart.
The way he comes across as utterly himself with no pretence or self importance than some of the truly gifted players have in spades. I read one comment that said you'd go by his house to buy something from him and end up talking away to the guy for hours .That kind of sums up what I mean perfectly.
He is such a down to earth man! Nice interview!
Man other than being an amazingly talented musician Mike is like the sweetest coolest guy. I could just listen to him for hours and hours just talk guitar and music, he's awesome.

Ah yes, Michael Angelo. Back in the midv80s, a buddy of mine brought over his Video. He's the guy that literally made me put down my guitar way back. I was like "if THAT is where guitarists are going, I'm out. I can't do that".

MAB did a guitar session in my town. Amazing lessons as well as watching him only 10 ft from where I was sitting was rather daunting.

He is the most down-to-earth and humble metal guitarist that I've ever seen! I'd love to just hang out and jam with him one day!
Michael is the master, and such a humble guy despite that. I was lucky enough to see him live at Guitar Center in Seattle years ago when he gave a free live clinic, promoting Washburn guitars. It was one of the loudest and most incredible displays of technique I've ever seen.

I love Troy and what he's doing for the community..That being said in my opinion the best way to learn this stuff is a combination of tips and actually just exploring the techniques your self and finding what feels best for you. After 25 years of playing I've premanantly changed my grip. Even Troy and MAB says that everyone is different so don't think your going to figure this out with out searching in the dark and lots of trial and error.
Michael is just a class guy. And it's not only speed, but harmony, rhythm, timing, phrasing and all the little nuances that place him at the top of the food chain. Listen to Rainforest. He really backs off the blazing speed for a more thoughtful, elegant musical piece. And he's a student of the history of guitar. This was a well made documentary type video, and I am glad I watched. Liked and subbed.
